The 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander is a compact crossover SUV that offers seating for up to seven passengers. It's part of the Outlander's third generation (2014-2020). Key trims include the ES, SE, and GT. New pricing ranged approximately from $23,000 to $33,000. The Outlander's appeal lies in its affordability and the rare availability of a third-row seat in the compact crossover segment, making it a practical choice for families on a budget.
The Good

The 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander provides good fuel efficiency and is valued for its affordability, appealing to practical buyers. The available third-row seating is a major selling point for larger families. While not a performance vehicle, it offers adequate power for everyday driving. Its redesigned exterior aimed for a more modern and appealing aesthetic, potentially attracting emotionally driven buyers.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander include its somewhat lackluster engine performance, especially when fully loaded. The third-row seat is cramped and best suited for children. Some owners have reported issues with the continuously variable transmission (CVT). The interior materials and overall fit and finish are not as refined as some competitors.

What Problems Does the 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander often involve the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). Some owners have reported experiencing hesitation, jerky movements, or even complete failure of the CVT, especially at higher mileages. Other reported issues include problems with the electrical system, such as malfunctioning sensors and issues with the infotainment system.

Recalls for the 2015 Outlander have included issues related to the engine control module (ECM) that could potentially cause the engine to stall. Additionally, there have been recalls related to brake lights malfunctioning due to a faulty stop lamp switch. It's essential to check the vehicle's VIN with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to verify if all applicable recalls have been addressed.

Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the CVT's durability. Maintenance, including regular fluid changes, is crucial to prolonging the transmission's life. The 2014 model year, which is the first of the third generation, had more reported issues than the 2015 model, suggesting some improvements were made. However, potential buyers should still carefully inspect the vehicle's maintenance history and consider a pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic to assess the overall condition and identify any potential problems.

How long will the 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander last?

With proper maintenance, a 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander can reasonably be expected to reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or provide 10-15 years of service. However, the CVT transmission is a key factor affecting longevity. Neglecting regular CVT fluid changes can significantly shorten its lifespan.

Long-term durability can be affected by rust, especially in regions with harsh winters and salted roads. Suspension components and bushings may also require replacement over time. Overall, consistent maintenance and addressing issues promptly will maximize the vehicle's lifespan.

I have had no major issues with this car and I have 100k miles on it. Serivice at Daytona Mitsubishi is wonderful. They fix it the first time

This car has been so reliable it’s insane to rely on another equal sized suv. So far, has been well taken care of and reciprocates in return with its utility abilities and cargo capacity. We’ve gone camping with it and I’d recommend putting on some Cooper evolution h/t tires on it for all terrain abilities.

This is a very cheaply made car, tons of recalls and everything is falling apart and has to be fixed. My car is only a 2015!! The dealership that sold me this particular car just ripped me off because the car is pretty much considered a lemon

2015 Outlander; SE/Sport Package; V/6 Six Speed Auto Trans; 17,000 km I guess I was dazzled by the ten year/100k Km warranty, which in practical terms is only five years if you drive the average amount (20K/ann), so what sounds like an outstanding p/t warranty is really just average. After almost one year of ownership I am still disappointed by the cheap, poorly laid out interior. The third row is not practical or worth the effort to get at and actually use, so I leave it folded out of sight. The non-cancelling toggles for seat-heat switches belong in a sixties British car (afterthought?) Bluetooth is rudimentary compared to what other manufacturers offer. Most cars have a red indicator on the door-lock toggle showing when the doors are unlocked, in the all-black interior it is difficult to tell (I applied my own red tape). Exposed (white) clips on (black) door-rubbers, tinny sounding doors, door panel flex when window is closed all contribute to cheapness. Engine hesitates on sharp left turns such as left turn at intersections, so I end up matting the gas pedal to avoid accidents (dealer can't find cause). There are much better options out there, keep looking.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander offers a range of tech and safety features. The base ES trim includes a 6.1-inch touchscreen display, a rearview camera, and a six-speaker audio system. The SE trim upgrades to a 7-inch touchscreen with smartphone integration (Android Auto and Apple CarPlay were not available in 2015; this is an aftermarket upgrade). The GT trim adds a premium Rockford Fosgate audio system.

Driver-assistance features were primarily available on the GT trim as optional packages. These included adaptive cruise control, forward collision mitigation, and lane departure warning. These features used sensors and cameras to help the driver avoid accidents.

Safety features include standard antilock brakes, stability control, traction control, and a suite of airbags. The 2015 Outlander received good crash-test ratings from both the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The IIHS awarded it a "Top Safety Pick" rating. Specific NHTSA ratings include 4 out of 5 stars overall. These safety ratings provide reassurance to potential buyers.

2015 Mitsubishi Outlander Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander had an MSRP ranging from approximately $23,000 to $33,000 depending on the trim and options. Current used market prices typically range from $8,000 to $15,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Outlander depreciates significantly over time, typical for Mitsubishi vehicles. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, mileage, maintenance history, and the presence of desirable features like the V6 engine and advanced safety systems. The availability of the third-row seat can also increase resale value.

2015 Mitsubishi Outlander Cost of Ownership

The 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander is generally considered an economical vehicle to own. Insurance costs are typically average for its class. Fuel costs are reasonable, especially with the 2.4L engine. Maintenance costs can be higher than average, particularly if CVT issues arise. Repair costs can also be unpredictable depending on reliability. Overall, the Outlander's lower purchase price helps offset potentially higher maintenance and repair costs, making it a relatively affordable option for budget-conscious buyers.

2015 Mitsubishi Outlander Insurance

Insurance for a 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander Compare to Other Vehicle?

The 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander competes with other compact SUVs like the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-5, and Nissan Rogue. In terms of performance, the Outlander lags behind the CR-V and CX-5, which offer more engaging driving experiences. Feature-wise, the Outlander is competitive, especially with the SE and GT trims. However, its infotainment system is not as user-friendly as some rivals.

Reliability is a concern for the Outlander, particularly regarding the CVT. The CR-V and RAV4 have better-established reputations for long-term reliability. Price is where the Outlander shines. It's generally more affordable than its rivals, both new and used. The third-row seating is a unique selling point not offered by most competitors in this class, with the Nissan Rogue being a notable exception.

Alternatives to consider include the Honda CR-V for its reliability and resale value, the Mazda CX-5 for its sporty handling and upscale interior, and the Nissan Rogue for its similar size and available third-row seating. If reliability is a top priority, the CR-V or RAV4 are better choices. However, if budget and the need for a third-row seat are paramount, the Outlander may be a suitable option.

Final Verdict: Is the 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander a Good Vehicle?

The 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander is ideal for budget-conscious buyers needing a compact SUV with available third-row seating. It's worth considering as a used vehicle if thoroughly inspected and maintained, with a focus on CVT health. Opting for the GT trim offers more features and the more powerful V6 engine. However, buyers should be aware of potential reliability concerns, especially with the transmission. If reliability is a top priority, other alternatives may be a better fit. Proceed with caution and a pre-purchase inspection is highly recommended. Don't buy without checking the VIN for recall and service history.

Most reliable car I have ever owned

I own the basic one, the car is a good reliable one, for example, 5 years with same brakes and they are still good. Never had a problem except changing the battery after 4Years. The interior material and options could be better though, the paint is also very sensitive...Mitsu should consider offering some more options as standards.

Great Value for a Third Row SUV

I have over 113k on this car. The third grow is tight but it does fit adults in a pinch. I have ES FWD model. It is plain, but has good crash ratings which is what sold me for a family car. The maintenance has been great. The only thing I don't like is the CVT transmission. You really have to rev it to get her up to speed. The MIVEC 4 cyl. motor is powerful enough and gets good mpg's on long trips. Travel space for a family of four is excellent. I didn't want to spend money on an awd because you really get ripped off on tires and not worth it. Bare in mind I live in New England and i can count on one hand in 20 years I've needed that capability. It's a good vehicle for those who view a family vehicle as a safe people hauler that gets good mpg's and has no pretense. Also the exterior design is quite nice. Are their nicer SUV's ? Yes. Will you get all this for 14k? (bought with 40k used) Nope...

2015 Outlander

Great car. I have 95,000 miles on mine. Runs like the day I bought it. General maintenance performed. Never had a problem. These cars will last a long time 250,000 miles plus easily. Next time I'm buying the 7 seater with the 2.4. By the way my niece has a Mirage with 300,000 miles on it. 10 year 100,000 mile warranty. You can't beat it.

I LOVE this car

I was looking for a reliable SUV that was big enough to haul all my camping gear but small enough to be a city car. This one fits the bill perfectly.
