2007 Mitsubishi Outlander Overview, Reviews, Ratings & Specs

Rating: 4.49
Based on 48 Owner Reviews â–¶
Cathleen V | March 31, 2025
The 2007 Mitsubishi Outlander is a compact crossover SUV representing the second generation of the Outlander. It debuted with a new design and improved features. Key trims included the ES, LS, and XLS. The Outlander's popularity stemmed from its available third-row seating (on some trims), which was unusual for its class, and its sporty handling. New pricing started in the low $20,000s.
The Good

The 2007 Outlander offered decent performance for its class, appealing to those seeking a responsive ride. Practical buyers appreciated its available third-row seating and fuel efficiency. Its sporty design and comfortable interior were also appealing. While not class-leading in reliability, it generally offered good value for money.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2007 Outlander include reports of electrical issues, specifically related to the alternator and some sensor malfunctions. The continuously variable transmission (CVT), although efficient, could be a source of concern long-term if not properly maintained. Owners should also inspect for rust, particularly in areas with harsh winters.

What Problems Does the 2007 Mitsubishi Outlander Have?

The 2007 Mitsubishi Outlander has a few commonly reported problems. Electrical issues, particularly alternator failures and sensor malfunctions, seem to be a recurring theme among owners. Some reports also mention issues with the continuously variable transmission (CVT) on models equipped with it.

Rust is another potential long-term reliability concern, especially in regions with road salt usage during winter. Owners should inspect the undercarriage and body panels for signs of corrosion.

Regarding recalls, it's important to check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for any outstanding recalls related to the specific VIN of the vehicle you are considering. While there may not be any widespread, major recalls, smaller issues could have been addressed through recall campaigns.

Long-term reliability can be improved with diligent maintenance. Regular fluid changes (especially for the CVT) and addressing any electrical issues promptly are crucial for extending the lifespan of the vehicle.

How long will the 2007 Mitsubishi Outlander last?

A 2007 Mitsubishi Outlander, with proper maintenance, could realistically reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report reaching this milestone, indicating good long-term durability. However, longevity heavily depends on maintenance habits. Neglecting fluid changes or ignoring minor issues can significantly shorten its lifespan.

Over time, common weaknesses tend to emerge, such as rust formation, electrical component failures, and potential CVT issues (if equipped). Preventative maintenance, such as rustproofing and timely repairs, is key to maximizing the years of service.

Negative Owner Reviews
JenJen
I was in love with this SUV. I actually took the greyhound overnight to a dealership just to get this car... And boy was a not ready for the rude awakening that I got. The car runs well but the major problem is that whenever it idles i.e. at a light, turning, at a stopsign the heat goes out. The heat will go from blowing out hot while my foot is on the pedal to blowing out luckwarm when stopped. I called Mitsubishi 4 times, took the car in 2 times for it and all that the dealership told me was that it was a characteristic of the car. I asked does the heat go out in their car when they are stopped and they said no, so I said why it is ok then for it to go out in mine. Mitsubishi wasn't willing to fix it. I just had to deal with it, and I wasn't willing to. 15 days after I bought the car I traded it in for a Hyundai Sante Fe... I only wish I would have bought the Sante Fe first.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2007 Mitsubishi Outlander offered a reasonable level of technology for its time. Standard entertainment features included a CD player and an AM/FM radio. Higher trims offered upgraded audio systems with MP3 playback and satellite radio compatibility.

Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern vehicles. ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) and stability control were standard. Optional features on higher trims included a navigation system and a rearview camera (relatively rare for this model year).

Safety features included front and side airbags, as well as side curtain airbags for all rows.

Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) should be consulted for specific details. Generally, the Outlander performed adequately in crash tests for its class, but ratings can vary by specific test and model year. It is important to verify these ratings on their respective websites.
The built-in tech is dated compared to today's standards; Bluetooth connectivity for phones wasn't standard across all trims.

2007 Mitsubishi Outlander Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2007 Mitsubishi Outlander had a starting MSRP in the low $20,000s, with higher trims reaching the upper $20,000s. As a used vehicle, prices vary widely based on condition, mileage, and location, but typically range from $3,000 to $8,000.

The Outlander has depreciated significantly due to its age and the fact that Mitsubishi is not a top-tier brand in terms of resale value. Factors affecting resale include the vehicle's condition, maintenance history, and the presence of desirable features like the V6 engine or third-row seating. High mileage and any known mechanical issues will negatively impact the price.

2007 Mitsubishi Outlander Cost of Ownership

The 2007 Mitsubishi Outlander is generally considered to be moderately economical to own. Insurance costs are typically average for its class. Fuel consumption is reasonable, especially with the four-cylinder engine. Maintenance costs can be higher than some competitors due to the potential for electrical issues and the CVT transmission (if equipped). Repair costs can also be somewhat elevated depending on the specific repair needed. Long-term ownership costs depend heavily on preventative maintenance.

2007 Mitsubishi Outlander Insurance

Insurance for a 2007 Mitsubishi Outlander is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2007 Mitsubishi Outlander Compare to Other Vehicle?

The 2007 Mitsubishi Outlander competed with other compact SUVs such as the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, and Nissan Rogue. In terms of performance, the Outlander's V6 engine offered decent power, but it wasn't class-leading. The RAV4 and CR-V generally had better reliability reputations. The Nissan Rogue focused more on fuel efficiency. The Outlander's key advantage was the availability of a third-row seat in some trims, which set it apart from most competitors in its class.

In terms of features, the Outlander was competitive, but models like the RAV4 often offered more advanced technology. Price-wise, the Outlander was often more affordable than the RAV4 or CR-V, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious buyers. However, the lower price often reflected its lower resale value.

Alternatives to the Outlander would depend on priorities. If reliability is paramount, the Toyota RAV4 or Honda CR-V are better choices, even at a slightly higher price point. If fuel economy is the main concern, the Nissan Rogue might be a better option. If the third row is crucial, few other SUVs in this class offered it at this price point.

Final Verdict: Is the 2007 Mitsubishi Outlander a Good Vehicle?

The 2007 Mitsubishi Outlander can be a decent choice for budget-minded buyers seeking a compact SUV with available third-row seating. It's worth considering if the price is right and a thorough inspection reveals no major issues, particularly concerning the electrical system and CVT transmission.

It's best to purchase a well-maintained model with service records. Aim for the XLS trim for better features, but be aware that it might command a slightly higher price. If reliability is a top priority, alternative vehicles like the Toyota RAV4 or Honda CR-V might be a better investment, despite a potentially higher initial cost. Avoid models with excessive rust or a history of neglected maintenance.

Excellent value with many options.

Purchased fully optioned, keyless entry, in-dash DVD player, Rockford Fosgate sound with sub-woofer, leather seat, Navigation, 3rd row seats, fold down tailgate, AWD, sunroof and ton of storage compartments / pockets, 13 to be exact. 82,000 and zero issues. Transmission grabs great, AC blows super cold, no leaks, mechanically flawless. Paint job not the best on mine. Clear coat is fading. Vehicle just runs so well and strong. Outstanding value on my 2007 model.

No other vehicle with this reliability in 2007

This vehicle is amazing in every way. It was ahead of every other vehicle available in 2007. The all wheel and 4 wheel drive are incredible. I drive thousands of winter miles in MT, UT, ID and WY every year. No blizzard can stop it. The engine is bullet proof and loaded with power for a V6. 216,000 miles and never had any issues with it. The engine still has the power it did when I bought but I also use synthetic oil from the day I took it home. I wish I had another one just like it. My kids drive it now and they love it. Just no complaints or regrets to this day. This exact model was discontinued in 2009 I believe but the "shark nose" is a good looking sport design that looks fun even sitting still. I have XLS model.

My Outlander has been an issue free vehicle.

I have 150,000 miles on my Outlander, and all I did was change the oil every 3K on schedule, and it has performed for me flawlessly. It?s competitors, Honda and Toyota priced me out of the market years ago.
