Drew B | March 31, 2025
The 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander marks the fourth generation of this compact crossover SUV, representing a significant redesign. Available as a 3-row SUV, its model years span from 2022 onwards. Key trims include ES, SE, SEL, and SEL Premium. The pricing range typically falls between $27,000 and $37,000. Its standout features are the bold styling, standard third-row seating (rare in its class), and a long warranty, making it popular for budget-conscious families needing extra space.
The Good

The 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander offers a compelling blend of value and practicality. Its advantages include a comfortable ride, striking design, and a spacious interior with standard third-row seating. For the practical buyer, fuel efficiency and Mitsubishi's generous warranty are appealing. Emotionally, the bold styling and modern interior create a desirable ownership experience. Improved refinement over previous generations is also a plus.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander include engine performance that some find underpowered, especially when fully loaded. The CVT transmission can exhibit droning noises under heavy acceleration. The third-row seating is best suited for children. Some reviews cite infotainment system lag and limited cargo space with all seats in use. Watch out for potential early production glitches reported in some forums.

What Problems Does the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander Have?

While the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander is a relatively new model, some frequently reported problems involve the infotainment system. Users have noted lag, occasional freezing, and issues with smartphone connectivity. The CVT transmission has also drawn criticism for its performance and noise, particularly under heavy acceleration. Some owners have reported experiencing minor electronic glitches and sensor malfunctions.

Recalls for the 2022 Outlander have been issued for issues such as improperly installed brake boosters. It is crucial to check the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website for the latest recall information.

Long-term reliability remains to be seen, as the redesigned model hasn't been on the market long enough to establish a solid track record. However, Mitsubishi's warranty is generally comprehensive. Historically, Mitsubishi vehicles have had average to slightly below-average reliability ratings compared to other brands. Owner forums and automotive publications should be monitored for any emerging long-term issues. Pre-purchase inspections by qualified mechanics are recommended for used models to identify any potential problems early on. Specific problem areas to inspect include the CVT transmission, electronic systems, and the all-wheel-drive system (if equipped).

How long will the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander last?

With proper maintenance, a 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander should provide 150,000 to 200,000 miles of service, potentially lasting 10-13 years. Regular oil changes, transmission fluid flushes (especially for the CVT), and timely replacement of wear items are crucial. Long-term durability concerns primarily revolve around the CVT transmission and potential electronic issues. Monitor for any signs of transmission slipping, unusual noises, or erratic shifting. Address any warning lights or sensor malfunctions promptly. Preventative maintenance is key to maximizing the lifespan of the vehicle. Keeping the vehicle garaged and avoiding harsh driving conditions can also help prolong its life.

Came back from deployment and was in the market to purchase a vehicle. I was blown away when I took this car for a test drive. It is powerful, has great view, nice luxury feel of the car, nice memory seats (one also for my small wife whenever she needed to drive it). The car is made is Japan and workmanship is noticed. Nice stitching on the seats as well. The extra specs for the SEL made the car feel higher end (heated seats for front and rear seats, heated steering wheel, panoramic roof was awesome!). Mainly used for commuting to work, but if kids needed a ride, they preferred my outlander over the van! There was a recall but got that fixed easily. No other issues with my Outlander that I’ve experienced so far. Happy customer!

Own 2 2022 Outlanders. Both have been great. More bells and whistles than I’ve ever had. View is great and interior is awesome. Seats and driving position are excellent. 360 camera and all the sensors make parking easier. Fits so much. 3 issues I have is no spare tire, center console trim comes undone over time and both had shaking hoods that was part of a recall that took a while to get fixed.

Absolutely love this SUV! Recently rode in a Cadillac XT5, the ride and interior of the vehicle was not at the level of the Outlander. I was shocked at the difference and when you consider the price difference…WOW! Mitsubishi definitely produced an impressive vehicle. Gas milage around 30mpg, interior is beautiful and ride is Great. Love the Warrenty and service dept although I haven’t needed anything but an oil change. I have had numerous people ask about This SUV and comment on its exterior and check out the interior. More than any vehicle I have owned. I am a happy member of the Mitsubishi family!

2022 Mitsubishi Outlander Insurance

Insurance for a 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander competes with other compact SUVs like the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, Nissan Rogue, and Mazda CX-5. In terms of performance, the Outlander's engine is less powerful than some rivals. However, it offers standard third-row seating, a unique feature in this class. Feature-wise, the Outlander is competitive, especially in higher trims.

Reliability is an area where the Outlander lags behind the RAV4 and CR-V, which have established reputations for long-term dependability. Price-wise, the Outlander is generally more affordable, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious buyers.

The Nissan Rogue offers a more refined interior and better fuel economy. The Mazda CX-5 provides a more engaging driving experience. The Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V offer superior reliability.

Alternatives to consider include the Kia Sorento (if third-row seating is essential) which offers a bit more space and power. If reliability is a top priority, the RAV4 or CR-V are better choices. If a more engaging driving experience is desired, the Mazda CX-5 is preferable. The Outlander shines in its affordability and unique offering of standard third-row seating.

Final Verdict: Is the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander is ideal for budget-conscious families who need occasional third-row seating and appreciate a bold design. It's worth buying, particularly as a used vehicle, where the price represents strong value. Consider the SE or SEL trims, as they offer a good balance of features and affordability. New models are appealing due to Mitsubishi's long warranty. However, prioritize reliability if considering an older model, and ensure proper maintenance has been performed. If reliability is paramount or if you require strong performance, other options like the Toyota RAV4 or Honda CR-V may be more suitable. Carefully consider the tradeoffs between price, features, and long-term reliability when making your decision.

Purchased new in March of 2022. Two and a half years and 20000 miles later still happy, only issues I’ve had are wireless charger doesn’t seem to work right and sometimes the backup cam/parking sensor think I’m parking when coming to a stop light. Otherwise love it

Bought this car new in May of 2022 and have had nothing

Bought this car new in May of 2022 and have had nothing but issues with it since. It took 7 months to get Mitsubishi to repair the hood where it flapped when driving. The back hatch and dash board have rattled since i bought it but nothing can ever be found to cause it. The backup camera only works sometimes even after a recall repair for it. My front end collision sensor always says it cant work even on clear sunny days. I am now putting the third set of tires on it at only 47000 miles, but they are wearing evenly so the tire shop cant give a reason for it. The warning system is always dinging me for someone in the back seat with no seatbelt on when there isn't even anyone sitting in the back. The USB port has been replaced twice and still rarely works. The fan control buttons are a PITA to adjust because they constantly stick. Now i have an awful squealing sound from the back end when in reverse that I am sure will be yet another issue not covered under the warranty.

Don't buy!

The car looks good, but after 2 yrs (bought it brand new) of use all the problems started coming out... stalled due to fuel pump problems even after they replaced it because of recall. Brakes got worn out so fast. Problems with ebrake, CVT malfunction! It's becoming so unreliable. There's always some warning flashing and its stalled twice now! I've had an old Outlander from 2008 and it never gave me any problems. Also 3rd row seating is tight so its only good for small kids.

Remote start

The only issue I have is the remote start I purchase a vehicle in 2022. I could start my vehicle in my garage with the garage door open and they updated the system and now you’re not allowed to start your vehicle in the garage with the garage door open Which I find ridiculous. Because in Minnesota, I would actually have to go out to my vehicle in the garage start it up move it outside and then go back inside the house and remotely start it so I can warm up. Why would I not just keep it running unbelievable , ridiculous I will not be signing up for their plan after it runs out in April. I will have one installed. You should be ashamed of yourself Mitsubishi.

Don't do it

The car looks nice but that's where the positives end. It's unreliable, cheaply made, falls apart and full of mechanical issues. To add injury to insult the "warranty" is worthless because Mitsubishi famous line is "known issue no known repair " so for over a year I've had a faulty fuel pump, rear differential and air conditioner.
