2023 Mitsubishi Outlander Overview, Reviews, Ratings & Specs

Rating: 4.60
Based on 14 Owner Reviews
Cathleen V | March 31, 2025
The 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander represents the fourth generation of this compact crossover SUV. Available since 2003, the Outlander offers a blend of practicality and value. Key trims include ES, SE, SEL, and the top-tier SEL Premium. Its appeal lies in its distinctive styling, standard three-row seating (on most trims), and Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC). The price range typically falls between $28,000 and $40,000, depending on the trim and options. The long warranty is also a strong selling point.
The Good

The 2023 Outlander's advantages include a striking design that appeals emotionally, combined with a comfortable and spacious interior. Practically, it offers good fuel efficiency for its class, available all-wheel drive for enhanced traction, and a long warranty that provides peace of mind. The value proposition, with features for the price, is also attractive. While not a performance leader, it's competent for daily driving.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander include engine performance that may feel underpowered when fully loaded. The continuously variable transmission (CVT) can be noisy at times. While reliable overall, some owners have reported minor electronic glitches. The third-row seating is best suited for children. Researching specific issues reported by other owners is advisable before purchasing.

What Problems Does the 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander Have?

While the 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander is generally considered reliable, some frequently reported problems include minor electronic glitches, particularly related to the infotainment system. Some owners have mentioned issues with the touchscreen freezing or being slow to respond. Others have reported occasional issues with the advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) such as adaptive cruise control and lane departure warning. It's crucial to check for any active recalls issued by Mitsubishi or the NHTSA. Recalls, when issued, are typically for safety-related concerns and are addressed free of charge by the manufacturer. Long-term reliability concerns are still being evaluated, as this generation of the Outlander is relatively new. However, early reports suggest that the engine and transmission are generally robust. The PHEV version, in particular, could have unique long-term reliability concerns related to the battery and electric motor system. Staying updated on owner forums and reliability surveys can provide valuable insights into potential long-term issues. Checking the vehicle's history for any reported problems and ensuring regular maintenance can also help prevent future issues.

How long will the 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander last?

With regular maintenance, the 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander can reasonably be expected to provide 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-15 years of service. Long-term durability hinges on adhering to the recommended maintenance schedule, including timely oil changes, fluid flushes, and inspections. Potential weaknesses over time could include wear and tear on suspension components, deterioration of rubber seals and hoses, and potential issues with the electronic components. Rust can be a concern in regions with harsh winters and road salt, so rustproofing treatments are recommended. Proper care and preventative maintenance can significantly extend the lifespan of the vehicle.

2023 Mitsubishi Outlander Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander ranged from approximately $28,000 for the base ES trim to around $40,000 for the top-tier SEL Premium. Current used market prices typically range from $22,000 to $35,000, depending on mileage, condition, and trim level. The Outlander depreciates at an average rate for its class. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, maintenance history, trim level, and the presence of optional features. All-wheel-drive models tend to hold their value slightly better, particularly in regions with inclement weather. A clean Carfax report and documented maintenance history are crucial for maximizing resale value.

2023 Mitsubishi Outlander Cost of Ownership

The 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander is generally considered relatively economical to own. Insurance costs are typically average for its class. Fuel costs are reasonable, especially for the front-wheel-drive models. Maintenance costs are also average, with regular servicing required to maintain the warranty. Repair costs can be higher if specialized parts are needed, but overall, the Outlander doesn't present exorbitant ownership costs. The long warranty helps to mitigate potential repair expenses during the initial ownership period. PHEV models may have higher initial costs, but lower fuel costs could offset this over time.

How Does the 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander Compare to Other Vehicle?

The 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander competes with the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, Nissan Rogue, and Mazda CX-5. In terms of performance, the Outlander's engine isn't as powerful as some rivals. However, its available S-AWC provides superior handling in adverse conditions. Feature-wise, it offers a good value, with standard three-row seating often available at a lower price point than competitors. Reliability is generally good, but the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V have a slightly better reputation. The Nissan Rogue offers comparable features and styling. The Mazda CX-5 provides a more engaging driving experience, but lacks the Outlander's third-row seating option. In terms of price, the Outlander is often more affordable than the RAV4 and CR-V. Alternatives include the Kia Sorento, which also offers three-row seating, and the Hyundai Tucson, which offers a longer warranty and competitive features. If performance is a priority, the Mazda CX-5 or Toyota RAV4 Prime (plug-in hybrid) might be better choices. However, if value and three-row seating are paramount, the Outlander is a strong contender.

Ranks #1133 SUV

Final Verdict: Is the 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander a Good Vehicle?

The 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander is ideal for families seeking a stylish and affordable compact SUV with available three-row seating. It's worth buying if value and practicality are key priorities. The Outlander offers a compelling combination of features and price, especially in the SE or SEL trims, which provide a good balance of equipment. A used Outlander can be a particularly good value, provided it has a clean history and has been well-maintained. Consider a new model if the long warranty is a significant factor. However, those prioritizing performance or a more refined driving experience might consider alternatives. Ultimately, the Outlander is a solid choice for budget-conscious buyers who need the flexibility of three-row seating.

2023 Mitsubishi Outlander SEL BLACK EDITION.

2023 Mitsubishi Outlander SEL BLACK EDITION. I bought mines brand new on Nov 2022. So far it had a recall for firmware update. As of now. Almost 15 k miles and no issues. I love all the features and was told ot doesn't have the issues its predecessor had. Mitsubishi invested millions in the 2023 models so hopefully I can get 200k or more miles out of it.

Some Annoying Concerns

2023 Mitsubishi Outlander SE AWD Have had the car for 11 months since new and overall it drives good but: -two recalls for back up camera and software -bad front suspension mounts that made annoying popping noise -bad steering rack and pinion that also made popping noise -front brake caliper noise that scored the rotor [states it could be from a small rock?] luckily the dealer had parts in stock but took over 7 hours to fix, as I waited.

2023 Mitsubishi Outlander report

2023 outlander SE, now has 6500 miles on it. We bought it mostly because it was the best value, and a relative has one and recommended it. We love it, was concerned about power but it has plenty if not in the fuel saving mode..which got us 36mpg highway. Took awhile to get used to all the safety features, but in short they are great. We’ve used all seven seats a couple of times, the back two are ok for short trips, but that was expected. They fold away nicely. Paint was perfect, it’s some kind of white diamond, looks different depending on sunlight. There are a lot of sw driven options, could be confusing for older non-sw savvy folks. We have only used service for one issue, which turned out to be a user configurable issue (lane encroachment warning). It was working as designed, also the cruise control front vehicle avoidance was a pleasant surprise. Love this vehicle. We live on a pot hole filled dirt road, vehicle taking it well so far. It does have a stiff suspension, noticeable on our dirt road, but fine on paved roads. It is the all wheel drive version, we’ll see how it handles snow soon. Oh, ground clearance is decent, not too low. We do not have the on board guidance system, but can use apple play. Wife would have preferred this option. Another good surprise, it e-mails us notifications of warnings on the dash board, like “low tire pressure”. Cool. One last thing, we very seldom see another one on the road. Odd…this is a great vehicle.

Affordable and Luxurious SUV

Years ago, I owned a 2011 Mitsubishi Endeavor. I loved that vehicle. Over the years, I’ve owned numerous luxury vehicle brands (Mercedes-Benz, Lincoln, Audi, etc.). However, when I thought back to my favorite vehicle, it was always the Mitsubishi Endeavor. So, when I set out to buy a new vehicle this year, I was curious to see what Mitsubishi had to offer in 2023. WOW! The new Outlander was intriguing. Really impressive styling, tech options galore, and third row seating. I narrowed down my trim options and landed on a 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander SEL. This is by far the most impressive vehicle Mitsubishi has ever created for the U.S. market. If you’re thinking of buying a new SUV, I STRONGLY encourage you to check out the 2023 Outlander. It’s light years away from its predecessor. It doesn’t seem possible to own a vehicle at this level of quality and luxury for the price I paid. Test drive one and see for yourself.
