The 2008 Mitsubishi Outlander is a compact crossover SUV that debuted its second generation in 2007. Key trims included ES, SE, and XLS. Its popularity stemmed from offering a blend of fuel efficiency and a unique (for the time) optional third-row seat, providing seating for seven. The original MSRP ranged roughly from $20,000 to $28,000. It stood out with its sporty handling and available V6 engine for added power.
The Good

The 2008 Mitsubishi Outlander offered decent performance, especially with the V6 engine. Its value proposition was strong, appealing to practical buyers seeking affordability and available third-row seating. Sporty handling and contemporary design provided emotional appeal, while reasonable fuel efficiency added to its practical benefits. Reliability was generally average for its class. Comfort was acceptable, though not exceptional.

The Bad

Weaknesses of the 2008 Mitsubishi Outlander included potential issues with the continuously variable transmission (CVT), especially in earlier models. Some owners reported electrical problems and premature wear of interior components. Rust could be a concern in colder climates. The third-row seat was cramped and best suited for children.

What Problems Does the 2008 Mitsubishi Outlander Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2008 Mitsubishi Outlander often revolved around the CVT transmission. Some owners experienced jerky shifting, hesitation, or even complete transmission failure, particularly in earlier model years. Electrical issues, such as malfunctioning sensors or problems with the power windows and locks, were also reported. Oil leaks, especially from the valve cover gasket, were another common concern. Rust, particularly in areas with harsh winter conditions and road salt usage, was a long-term reliability concern.

Recalls for the 2008 Outlander were issued for issues like potential fuel leakage due to corrosion of the fuel pump relay, which could increase the risk of a fire. Another recall involved the windshield wiper motor, where a potential malfunction could reduce visibility in inclement weather. Check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for the most up-to-date recall information.

Long-term reliability could be affected by the CVT transmission issues, which could lead to expensive repairs. Regular maintenance, especially fluid changes for the transmission and engine, was crucial to mitigate these risks. Suspension components, such as ball joints and control arms, could also wear out over time, requiring replacement.

How long will the 2008 Mitsubishi Outlander last?

With proper maintenance, a 2008 Mitsubishi Outlander could reasonably reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or provide 12-15 years of service. However, longevity heavily depends on consistent maintenance, especially transmission fluid changes. The CVT transmission remains a long-term weakness. Neglecting regular maintenance can significantly shorten its lifespan. Rust, particularly in northern climates, and electrical issues are also potential long-term durability concerns. Engines, if well maintained, tend to be relatively durable.

Perfect size SUV. Love all the safety features. Excellent value for the money. This car is comfortable, stylish and the new model has many more safety features than our old one.
Calievo
This car is as reliable as it gets. It runs and works like new. Can't go wrong with choosing this vehicle.
Terry
I really like the smaller SUV. The only things don't care for are the small gas tank. I need to fill up frequently and that the back seat does not move forward or backward.
Negative Owner Reviews
I SHOULD HAVE BUT A SUBARU
O.K. suv. Lots of room and 220hp power. Great 650 watt stereo. MPG is not very good, it sucks down gas. Don't get the fog lights they are defective, they build up condensation inside and Mitsubishi advises that's the way they are made therefore the warranty does not apply. I have owned it several months so reliability is unknown at this time. I gave it 3 stars for now. If the price of gas and a "real" warranty is an issue don't buy it. Since Mitsubishi refused to replace or refund the $4oo.oo dollar price I paid for the defective fog lights I am very doubtful they'll fix anything under it's so called" bumper to bumper warranty".

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2008 Mitsubishi Outlander offered a reasonable array of tech and safety features for its time. Standard entertainment features included a CD player and AM/FM radio. Higher trims offered upgraded audio systems, including MP3 compatibility and satellite radio. Navigation was an optional feature on the XLS trim, using a touchscreen interface.

Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern vehicles. A rearview camera was an optional feature on higher trims. Safety features included standard anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic stability control (ESC), and traction control. Front and side airbags were also standard. Optional features included side curtain airbags for enhanced protection in side-impact collisions.

Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) should be reviewed for detailed information on the vehicle's performance in various crash scenarios. Generally, the 2008 Outlander performed reasonably well in crash tests for its class, but specific ratings vary depending on the testing agency and year of testing. It is advised to consult the official NHTSA and IIHS websites for exact ratings.

2008 Mitsubishi Outlander Prices and Market Value

The 2008 Mitsubishi Outlander had an MSRP ranging from approximately $20,000 to $28,000 when new, depending on the trim level and options. As of today, used market prices typically range from $3,000 to $8,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. Depreciation has been significant, as expected for a vehicle of this age. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition (mechanical and cosmetic), accident history, and whether it has the desirable V6 engine and/or third-row seating. Models with a well-documented maintenance history tend to command higher prices.

2008 Mitsubishi Outlander Cost of Ownership

The 2008 Mitsubishi Outlander generally presents moderate ownership costs. Insurance premiums are typically average for its class. Fuel costs depend on driving habits and engine choice; the four-cylinder offers better economy. Maintenance costs are moderate, but potential CVT transmission repairs can be expensive. Repair costs can be higher than average due to the availability and price of parts. Overall, it's not the most economical vehicle to own, but it's not excessively costly either, assuming no major, unexpected repairs.

How Does the 2008 Mitsubishi Outlander Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2008 Mitsubishi Outlander competed against vehicles like the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, and Nissan Rogue. In terms of reliability, the RAV4 and CR-V generally outperformed the Outlander. The Rogue offered a similar value proposition but sometimes suffered from CVT transmission issues as well. Performance-wise, the Outlander with the V6 engine offered more power than the base engines in its rivals. Feature-wise, the Outlander was competitive, offering comparable equipment. Price-wise, it often undercut the RAV4 and CR-V.

Alternatives to consider include the Toyota RAV4, known for its reliability and strong resale value, although typically more expensive. The Honda CR-V also offers excellent reliability and a comfortable ride. The Mazda CX-7 provides sportier handling but may have slightly lower fuel economy. Given the Outlander's potential CVT issues, carefully inspecting the transmission's condition is crucial when considering a purchase. The Hyundai Santa Fe of the same year also offered comparable features and value.

Final Verdict: Is the 2008 Mitsubishi Outlander a Good Wagon?

The 2008 Mitsubishi Outlander is ideal for budget-conscious buyers seeking a compact crossover with available third-row seating. It can be a worthwhile purchase if carefully inspected and well-maintained, especially if found at a compelling price. It's best to prioritize models with a solid service history and a healthy transmission. The V6-powered XLS trim offers the most features and performance. Given its age, a pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is highly recommended to assess potential issues, particularly with the CVT transmission and rust.

Most reliable car I've ever owned

Bought new. Only 1 repair in 12 years, 141.000 miles, fan blower motor. That's it! 4 cylinder engine still runs smooth and quiet. Amazingly the horrible cvt hasn't failed. I have done the maintenance on it. Hate the cvt, but otherwise I still like it fine. And the paint still looks very good, no clearcoat failure and it always in the California sun.

Been a great car

I bought this car for my wife New in 2008 We have 280,000 km on the car with no issues I replaced the timing belt and brakes other than that it has been Outstanding. The 3L motor has plenty of power. The steering is tight and responsive even after the high mileage. Was definitely a great choice to buy

Best bang for the buck!

I've owned this car for 8 years now. It is a great car and other than basic maintenance, it still drives like new and has plenty of power. . It currently has 100,000 miles on it and I plan on doubling that number before I even consider replacing it.

Most versatile car I owned

Is surprisingly comfortable, rides smooth over speed bumps and drives well in corners. Is not very fast but is ok. Is quite fuel efficient (4 cylinder). Some small detail in dashboard are not really smart but in total this car gives incredible value for money (owned before much more expensive V70's)

Loved the Test Drive, Bought the Car

It's got sexy black interior, sporty with every amenity, and loads of options. The car has a lot of speed, and it wants to go fast, but at the same time it's cargo space is great and I know my family will look good in it, and will be safe riding in it. It's going to make for a fun and safe, reliable and sporty commuter car as I drive from Clearwater into St Petersburg every day and home again. The test drive let me know it was going to be a capable machine, and it was love at first engine rev.

Dependable reliable easy to own

Bought it in 2008 slightly used from dealer. Very dependable and well built. Did city driving on terrible roads for 5 years and had minor front end damage from that. Otherwise the engine is strong, quality built parts. My use on the interior is minimal because its only me using it. A couple rust spots where car was scratched but not eating away at car. I have 104k on it currently and know that i will get in my car and it will start and not breakdown. The CVT transmission performs well and smooth. Gas mileage is poor (only from the high cost of gas). Overall one of the best cars I've owned!
