The 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander is a compact crossover SUV aimed at families seeking an affordable and fuel-efficient option. Launched as part of the Outlander's third generation (2014-2020), it offers seating for up to seven passengers with its optional third row. Key trims include the ES, SE, SEL, and GT. New pricing started around $23,000, while used models range widely depending on condition and mileage. Its available third-row seating at a competitive price point is a significant selling point.
The Good

The 2016 Outlander offers strong value for practical buyers, boasting a low entry price and decent fuel efficiency. Its available third-row seating is a major plus for larger families. While not a performance vehicle, it provides adequate power for daily driving. Emotionally, its dependability and comprehensive warranty inspire confidence, while the updated styling offers a more appealing aesthetic.

The Bad

Weaknesses of the 2016 Outlander include a somewhat underpowered base engine and a cramped third-row seat best suited for children. The continuously variable transmission (CVT) can be noisy and less responsive than traditional automatics. Interior materials are not as premium as some competitors. Potential buyers should inspect for CVT issues and ensure all electronic features function correctly.

What Problems Does the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander Have?

The 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander has faced some reported problems and recalls. Frequently reported issues include problems with the continuously variable transmission (CVT), particularly related to premature failure or unusual noises. Some owners have also reported issues with the electrical system, including problems with the infotainment system and power windows.

Recalls for the 2016 Outlander included issues with the electronic stability control (ESC) system, potentially leading to reduced braking performance. There were also recalls related to the parking brake, which could become inoperative over time.

Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the CVT's durability. Regular maintenance, including fluid changes, is crucial to extending its lifespan. Oil consumption can also be an issue reported by some owners as the vehicle ages. Considering its issues, potential buyers should get a pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic with specific attention paid to the transmission, braking and electronics.

How long will the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander last?

With diligent maintenance, a 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander can potentially reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles, translating to roughly 10-13 years of service for the average driver. However, consistent upkeep, especially regarding CVT fluid changes and timely repairs, is vital. The primary long-term durability concerns center on the CVT's reliability. Owners should adhere to the recommended service intervals and address any unusual transmission behavior promptly. Other potential weaknesses that could arise include increased oil consumption and wear to suspension components.

The 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander features a range of tech, entertainment, driver-assistance, and safety features. Base models offer a 6.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system, while higher trims boast a 7-inch display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander Insurance

Insurance for a 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Wagon with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander competes with the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Nissan Rogue, and Mazda CX-5. The Outlander often undercuts rivals in price, especially with the inclusion of the third-row seat, a feature not always available in this segment.

In terms of performance, the CR-V and CX-5 generally offer a more engaging driving experience. The RAV4 and CR-V boast superior reliability reputations. Feature-wise, the Nissan Rogue and Mazda CX-5 have arguably more refined interiors and a broader range of available tech.

Alternatives to consider include the Toyota RAV4 for its reliability, the Honda CR-V for its overall competence, or the Mazda CX-5 for its sporty handling. If the third-row seat is a necessity, the Outlander is a viable choice, particularly if budget is a primary concern. Otherwise, the other listed competitors are generally better rounded vehicles.

Final Verdict: Is the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander a Good Wagon?

The 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander is ideal for budget-conscious buyers who need a compact SUV with optional third-row seating. It's worth buying *used*, provided a thorough pre-purchase inspection is conducted, particularly focusing on the CVT's condition and service history. The SE trim strikes a good balance of features and value. While it may not excel in any single area compared to its rivals, its affordability and available third-row make it a practical choice for certain buyers. Those prioritizing reliability and performance may want to explore alternatives.

We purchased this auto new - have never had a problem

We purchased this auto new - have never had a problem with the car. We keep it maintained on a regular basis and the only items we have replaced IN 8 YEARS have been wipers, tires and filters. PERIOD. Exceptional value, I usually replace cars ever 4 to 6 years. Simply no reason at this time to consider replacement. Had actually considered writing the CEO about the quality of their cars. Only wear is on my seat due to getting in and out of the vehicle.

Good choice for a family

Overall, the Mitsubishi Outlander was a good choice for my family with the third-row foldable seats which can be transformed and used for cargo. It offers a comfortable interior and lots of standard features. Great driving settings, only found in luxury vehicles like: - Eco Mode (Fuel efficient) - Sports Mode (Powerful V6 engine) - AWD Mode (Snow | all rough terrains, etc) Pros: - Affordable price compared to other similar models. - Use as a cargo space or convert to third row seat. - Well-equipped and comfortable ride. - Good handling with multiple driving settings. - Fuel efficient and easy to maintain. Cons: - Not the most stylish or exciting SUV on the market. - Average interior materials. - Low-end harness plastic covers.

Happy Wife

Bought the Outlander for my wife, replacing an older Mercedes ML320. She loves it and that's what matters most. Runs great, drives great and the price range was within our budget. Overall, its a nice vehicle and should keep her happy for a few years. She gave it a name already. Happy wife, happy life!

Reliable as Mitsus have always been

Good value for money. Very pretty and solid car. I'd prefer it to have more storage space. Otherwise we have been extremely happy with it.

Best SUV I've ever owned

This car is one of the most reliable car I've ever owned. The exterior styling is very futuristic, It comes with standard LED night light and third row. However the best thing with this truck is the gas mileage. I get average (combo) 28 mpg. Almost 100 k miles and I only replaced the brake pads. Would highly recommend.

Failed just when the factory warranty expired

The transmission failed just when the factory warranty expired (falied at 64K and warranty was 60K). I had purchased an extended warranty but the service at Mitsubishi was terrible and rude (+1 month to fix). I do not recommend this car.
