Eugene S | March 31, 2025
The 2012 Mitsubishi Outlander is a compact SUV that offered a blend of practicality and fuel efficiency. It was part of the second generation Outlander (2007-2013). Key trims included the ES, SE, and XLS. The Outlander stood out for offering an optional third-row seat, uncommon in its class, increasing passenger capacity. Original pricing ranged from around $22,000 to $28,000. It was popular due to its lower price point and available V6 engine.
The Good

The 2012 Outlander offers practical advantages like available third-row seating and decent fuel economy, appealing to families. The optional V6 engine provides adequate power, satisfying drivers seeking performance. Its relatively low price point represents good value. While not luxurious, the interior offers adequate comfort for daily commutes. Reliability is generally considered average for its class.

The Bad

Weaknesses of the 2012 Outlander include a somewhat dated interior design and less refined ride compared to competitors. The base four-cylinder engine can feel underpowered, especially when fully loaded. Some owners have reported issues with the continuously variable transmission (CVT). Rust can be a concern in areas with harsh winters, so inspect carefully.

What Problems Does the 2012 Mitsubishi Outlander Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2012 Mitsubishi Outlander include issues with the continuously variable transmission (CVT), particularly in models equipped with the 2.4L engine. Some owners have reported premature CVT failure or slipping. Other common issues include problems with the air conditioning system, such as compressor failure or refrigerant leaks. Rust, especially in areas where salt is used on roads, is also a concern. Suspension components, such as struts and bushings, may wear out prematurely. Recalls have been issued for various issues, including potential fuel leakage and problems with the anti-lock braking system (ABS). It's recommended to check the vehicle's VIN for any outstanding recalls. Long-term reliability concerns primarily revolve around the CVT's durability and the potential for rust. Regular maintenance, including fluid changes, is crucial to mitigate these risks. Also, ensure to check for proper operation of the AWD system if equipped. Specific year models may have more reported issues, so researching forums and owner reviews is advisable before purchasing.

How long will the 2012 Mitsubishi Outlander last?

With good maintenance, a 2012 Mitsubishi Outlander can realistically reach 150,000-200,000 miles or provide 10-15 years of service. However, longevity depends heavily on maintenance habits. Regular oil changes, transmission fluid services (especially for CVT models), and rust prevention are critical. Long-term durability can be affected by the CVT's reliability; consistent fluid changes are essential. Suspension components and the air conditioning system may require attention as the vehicle ages. Rust is a significant weakness, potentially shortening the vehicle's lifespan in colder climates.

all crossovers in the category have similar lines, so styling NOT a factor - interior is a mix of soft touch with french stitching and hard surfaces and at least as nice as its' competition - Outlander was $2500 - $5000 less than the competition with a significantly better warranty - 100k drivetrain and 6 year bumper to bumper - - competition is Honda CRV, Toyota Rav 4, CX5 Mazda, Nissan Rogue - mileage is good with 23 - 26 mpg overall - is FWD/AWD or locking AWD - has all options I desired: cloth heated seats, moonroof, outrageous 710 watt stereo, fog lamps, sliding arm rest/console, roof rack, folding seats, steering wheel mounted controls, 18" alloy wheels, tinted glass, lots of cup holders, paddle shifters...it's our 5th Mitsubishi and I highly recommend these cars....I've had problems with Toyotas and Hondas in the past...usually right after warranty runs out...no previous problems with Mitsubishi....nice car and excellent value - actually made in Japan....

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2012 Mitsubishi Outlander offered a reasonable level of built-in tech for its time. Standard entertainment features included a CD player, auxiliary audio input, and basic audio system. Higher trims, like the SE and XLS, added features like a Rockford Fosgate premium sound system and available navigation. Driver-assistance features were limited, with standard cruise control but no advanced systems like blind-spot monitoring or lane departure warning.

Safety features included standard anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic stability control, traction control, and front and side airbags. Optional features included a rearview camera, available on higher trims. Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) were generally good, earning "Good" ratings in several categories. NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) ratings varied, but generally scored adequately. Keep in mind that safety technology has advanced considerably since 2012, so consider this in the context of modern standards. The available all-wheel-drive system added an extra layer of safety in adverse weather conditions. The optional navigation system, while dated by today's standards, provided route guidance. The Rockford Fosgate audio system was a notable upgrade for audiophiles.

2012 Mitsubishi Outlander Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2012 Mitsubishi Outlander ranged from approximately $22,000 to $28,000, depending on the trim level and options. As of late 2023/early 2024, used market prices typically range from $6,000 to $12,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Outlander has depreciated significantly, like most vehicles. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, maintenance history, and location. Models with lower mileage and a clean maintenance record command higher prices. The V6 models may hold their value slightly better due to their increased power.

2012 Mitsubishi Outlander Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2012 Mitsubishi Outlander are generally average for its class. Fuel costs depend on driving habits and engine choice, with the V6 consuming more fuel. Maintenance costs can be moderate, but potential CVT issues can lead to expensive repairs. Regular maintenance, including fluid changes, is crucial. Long-term ownership costs can be economical if the vehicle is well-maintained and major repairs are avoided, but potential CVT or rust issues could increase expenses, making it a potentially costly vehicle to own if not carefully maintained.

2012 Mitsubishi Outlander Insurance

Insurance for a 2012 Mitsubishi Outlander is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2012 Mitsubishi Outlander Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2012 Mitsubishi Outlander competed with vehicles like the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, and Nissan Rogue. In terms of performance, the Outlander's V6 engine offered comparable power to some rivals' optional engines, while the base four-cylinder was less competitive. The RAV4 and CR-V generally had better reliability reputations. Feature-wise, the Outlander offered an available third-row seat, a unique selling point, but lagged behind in some tech and driver-assistance features compared to newer versions of its rivals. Price was a significant advantage for the Outlander, often undercutting its competitors. Similar alternatives include the Mazda CX-5, known for its sporty handling, and the Subaru Forester, praised for its standard all-wheel drive.

Better alternatives, considering long-term reliability and refinement, might be the Toyota RAV4 or Honda CR-V, even if they cost slightly more upfront. The Nissan Rogue offers a more modern interior but may have its own reliability concerns. The Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tucson offer good value and longer warranties. Ultimately, the best alternative depends on individual priorities, such as price, features, or reliability.

Ranks #1538 SUV

Final Verdict: Is the 2012 Mitsubishi Outlander a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2012 Mitsubishi Outlander is ideal for budget-conscious buyers needing a compact SUV with available third-row seating. Whether it's worth buying depends on the price and condition. A well-maintained used example can be a good value, especially if the CVT has been properly serviced. Avoid models with a history of CVT problems or rust. The V6-powered XLS trim offers more power and features but consumes more fuel. A thorough inspection and test drive are essential before purchasing. Consider alternatives if long-term reliability is a top priority and budget allows. If affordability and the occasional need for seven seats are paramount, the Outlander could be a viable option.

Gem of a pick.

I bought this used 2012 Mitsubishi Outlander SE in 2014 with about 23,000 miles on it. All 8 years that I’ve had it, with the odometer now at just over 100,000 miles, the only things I had done on it is put in a new set of tires twice and and brake pads replacement/service twice. It has never broken down on me, or required any repair whatsoever in all the 8 years and more than 80,000 miles that I have had it. The on-demand 4-wheel drive feature works great in the snow. It does not have the most powerful engine, but is more than adequate for everyday commuting and has proven to be extremely reliable and sturdy. The brand may not rank well against the more acclaimed ones, but I think I got the year model that turned out to be a gem of a pick. I have owned 3 Toyotas, 2 Hondas, 1 Hyundai, 1 Mazda and 1 Chrysler, and I can rank this Mitsubishi along with the Honda as my best ever in reliability, durability and value.

One of the best / reliable vehicles I have owned.

This is our second Mitsubishi, first was a Lancer and was also a great vehicle. Bought our 2012 Mitsubishi Outlander GT from D&E Mitsubishi in Wilmington, NC as a certified pre-owned with 23,000 miles on it in early 2014. Vehicle was a Mitsubishi Exec demo vehicle, so it was fully loaded with every available option for the model year. Fast forward to 2019 we have 141,000 miles of trouble free driving. Vehicle has been to Florida and back several times, as well as all over the Carolinas on frequent trips. I would drive it to California and back today. Besides routine and recommended maintenance and one battery, no other repairs have had to be made. Still runs and handles like when it was first purchased. Very little interior rattle or noises as it has aged. I plan on keeping this one as long as it will allow us to! Only complaints are some of the interior materials scratch or mark easy and the paint is real thin and chips / scratches easy. Lancer had the same problem, so appears to be a Mitsubishi fit/finish issue. Other than that, again a great vehicle! 4WD/AWD (S/AWC) works extremely well in snow and sand. Gets decent gas mileage for a V6 SUV/CUV with AWD.

Love my Outlander

I have a 2012 Outlander and LOVE it. I have had to move cross country and all over the states several times and am impressed with how much I can fit in my SUV. I love that the seats fold down for extra storage. I added a hitch to the back so I could pull a small trailer, it can also pull a boat. It's a strong, durable, reliable, comfortable car that gets the job done.

Transmission just went. $7500 fix!

I have to say I have had the 2012 Outlander SE since 2012 and overall very happy. I do a lot of mileage and have 157k on it. Out of no where service engine light comes on and won't go into gear. Bring to three mechanics and all say same transmission. $7500-9000 repair. Not worth fixing for value of car. Had other brands and at least symptoms occur before a light. I am scrambling to find another car asap.

Outstanding vehicle

I purchased the car at the end of 2013 new and it was a left over 2012, happened to be the exact color and options I wanted, White GT loaded with everything. The car has an amazing super all wheel control system that handles like a dream in the snow. The car has been completely trouble free. I have put 47k mile on it in 2 years and its never let me down. The stereo system is outrageous and a BLAST! What a great driving experience my friends always compliment on how much they like it when they ride in it. I definitely made the right decision buying this car and would do it all over again if given the option.

Reliable Efficient SUV

We purchased a used 2012 with about 30,000km and have since put another 45,000km on the vehicle. Other than dealer tires wearing out prematurely, no real complaints. The dial 4 wheel drive is great in the snow and other amenities like heated seats are a nice touch. Would definitely consider another Outlander as our next vehicle.
