The Good
The 2002 E-Class offered a comfortable and refined ride, appealing to those prioritizing luxury. Its powerful engine options (especially the E430 and E55 AMG) delivered satisfying performance. Practical buyers appreciated its spacious interior and available wagon body style. While reliability can be a concern, a well-maintained example offers a prestigious ownership experience and decent value for money today.

Analysis
What Problems Does the 2002 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Have?
Suspension problems, including worn ball joints, control arm bushings, and shocks/struts, can compromise ride quality and handling. Oil leaks, especially from the valve cover gaskets and oil pan, are another potential issue. Some owners have reported transmission problems, although these are less frequent than other issues. Recalls for the 2002 E-Class have addressed issues like brake light switch failures and potential fuel leakage, so it's essential to check the vehicle's recall history.
Long-term reliability is dependent on consistent maintenance. Neglecting recommended service intervals can exacerbate existing problems and lead to costly repairs. Models with higher mileage are more likely to exhibit wear and tear on various components. While the 2002 model year isn't specifically known for unique problems compared to other W210 E-Classes, rust and electrical issues are consistently reported across the generation.
How long will the 2002 Mercedes-Benz E-Class last?
What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Safety features were a priority, with standard anti-lock brakes (ABS), traction control, and electronic stability program (ESP). Front and side airbags were also standard. Optional features included parktronic (parking sensors).
Crash-test ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) generally show good performance for the 2002 E-Class. The NHTSA gave it 5 stars for frontal driver-side crash protection and 4 stars for frontal passenger-side crash protection. Side-impact protection was also highly rated. Keep in mind that safety standards have evolved significantly since 2002, so modern vehicles offer superior protection in many areas. It's crucial to verify that all safety features are functioning correctly on any used model.

How Does the 2002 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Compare to Other Wagon?
In terms of features, all four cars offered a comparable level of luxury amenities. However, the E-Class's potential rust issues and electrical quirks can make it a less reliable choice than the Lexus GS. At their current used prices, the E-Class can be a good value if a well-maintained example is found, but potential repair costs should be factored in. If reliability is a top priority, the Lexus GS is a strong alternative. The BMW 5 Series is a better choice for those prioritizing driving dynamics. The Audi A6 with quattro offers a good balance, particularly for those needing all-weather capability. All cars in this class are now quite old so condition is paramount above badge.

Great car2002 E 430 4matic I've owned it since 2016 with 110000 miles on it. Now nearing 185000 miles. Best car I've ever owned. Fixed a leaky seal and replaced the PSE and tires. This car has power and can corner well. It's solid and quiet.

Not a Mercedes E320 fan !I purchased a 2002 Mercedes E320 sedan. I got exactly 82 miles before it quit running. Code advised upstream bank 1 O2 I had it changed and went 22 miles broke down again check engine back on. It was towed to a garage. I am awaiting for problem to be determined by the mechanic The car is no where as good as a Camry I had and given a choice I would never buy a used Mercedes again.

Extremely ReliableThis car is is very reliable, especially in the snow. The 4 matic makes this thing run snow like my Dodge Ram pickup. My review would be a 5 star except for Mercedes itself. I purchased this car at the end of the analog “Teleaid†system. Then Mercedes said a change over to digital would cost me $6,000.00. This was never published and had I known I would have waited another year for the 2003 Digital system.

Most Powerful and Secure Car I've OwnedThis has been SO reliable for me! I've had it for 16 years, and very little ever goes wrong with it, ever. Such a workhorse, so comfortable, quiet, great handling... Excellent German Car!

17 years old brings on lots of problemsLove the car but have had to pay, including repairs, triple what I should have. Many repairs needed, many due to car being 17 years old where things break. Was told car was in excellent condition. NOT SO. Beware of a car 17 years old.

All wheel drive is a game changer!Kind of like driving a German tank, but in a good way! Corners like a pregnant yak. Seats are a little bench-like. Seat heaters only heat the butt, not the back!
