The Good
The 2002 SL-Class offers strong V8 performance appealing to enthusiasts, while its robust construction and reputation for longevity attract practical buyers. Comfort is a key strength with a luxurious interior and smooth ride. The iconic design provides emotional appeal, and its current value on the used market makes it a surprisingly affordable entry into the luxury roadster segment.
The Bad
Potential weaknesses of the 2002 SL-Class include its complex hydraulic system for the convertible top, which can be expensive to repair. Electronics can also be problematic, requiring careful inspection. Furthermore, maintenance costs for a Mercedes-Benz, even an older one, are generally higher than average. Rust can be an issue in some climates.

What Problems Does the 2002 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class Have?
Electrical issues are also prevalent, ranging from malfunctioning sensors to problems with the instrument cluster and other electronic components. The adaptive damping system (ADS), if equipped, can also present challenges as it ages, with struts and accumulators needing replacement.
Rust can be a concern, particularly in areas with harsh winters where road salt is used. Check around the wheel wells, rocker panels, and undercarriage.
While specific recall information should be verified through official sources like the NHTSA website using the VIN, common recalls for similar-era Mercedes-Benz vehicles often related to safety equipment like airbags or fuel system components. Long-term reliability hinges on diligent maintenance. Neglecting scheduled servicing can lead to cascading failures, given the car's intricate design. Early detection and repair of minor issues are crucial for preventing major problems down the road.
How long will the 2002 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class last?
What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Entertainment was primarily provided by the audio system, which often included a CD player. Navigation systems were available as optional extras, but they are rudimentary by today's standards.
Driver-assistance features were limited compared to contemporary cars. Cruise control and traction control were standard. Safety features included anti-lock brakes (ABS), dual front airbags, and side airbags. Some models may have had optional features like a roll bar that automatically deployed in the event of a rollover.
Crash-test ratings from agencies like the NHTSA or IIHS for the 2002 model year specifically are difficult to find, but the R129 SL-Class generally had a reputation for solid construction and good safety performance for its era. It's important to note that safety standards have evolved considerably since 2002. Overall, the 2002 SL-Class prioritized luxury and comfort over cutting-edge technology.

How Does the 2002 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class Compare to Other Convertible?
Reliability is where the SL-Class can fall short compared to some competitors. The BMW Z8, while rare, is often regarded as more reliable. The Jaguar XK8 can also have similar reliability concerns as the SL. The Porsche 911 is generally considered more reliable than both.
In terms of price, used SL-Class models are often more affordable than comparable Porsche 911s or BMW Z8s. However, the lower purchase price can be offset by higher maintenance costs.
Alternatives to consider include the Porsche Boxster (for a more affordable and reliable roadster), the BMW Z3 (for a smaller and more agile option), or a newer Mercedes-Benz SLK (for more modern features, though potentially still with similar maintenance concerns). If reliability is a top priority, the Porsche 911 Cabriolet, though more expensive, may be a better choice.

Final Verdict: Is the 2002 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class a Good Convertible?

class of its ownit is a super car without the screaming flamboyance of most super cars. Inside it is even more elegant than outside with the 2 vanity mirrors, lean design with so much beauty you just don't want to leave the car. The passengers are always delighted by the good taste it presents. Driving is fun and it is quite and strong matching its classiness. Handling fantastic and super reliable. Maintenance is key. Overall it seams to be low key due to the incredible Mercedes quality of the area.

This Is A Great Hard Top ConvertibleI love driving and owning this car. It sits close to the ground yet has a smooth ride and the height can be adjusted to aid in avoiding curbs. I have owned it for a little over 6.5 years. Lovely dependable, swell car to own, drive and enjoy.

Mercedes Benz SL500 Silver ArrowI had this car for 9 years. Driving around in California in a Mercedes convertible; what can I say? We drove it up north through the redwood forests and down Highway 1 along the coast. Lots of fun.

Fabulous Silver ArrowWhile driving down the street, other SL owners look at my car and they know something is different. They haven't seen one like this, and they can't put their finger on why this SL is so different, but they love it! It is different enough to set itself aside as a real eye catcher. My wife drives this car and she absolutely loves the ride and the prestige it provides. The color, the hard top on or off, it looks great, and accented by the wheels!

Silver Arrow kills em deadFirst, I should admit I've had this car for a month. Therefore the reason for not five stars in every category. Just a few unknowns. But my expectations are high. I had a Chrys.Crossfire and traded up. Looked at 04 500sl with hardtop roof but really liked the uniqueness of the arrow. It's a dream to drive. You don't even notice how fast it is because the engine is smooth with great sync on the auto trans. Very comfy and luxury on interior. Well done. Solid and well built like my wagons and sedans by MB.
