The Mercedes-Benz SL-Class, a lineage dating back to the iconic 300 SL "Gullwing", continues its legacy of luxury roadsters with the 2016 model. This two-door convertible hardtop offers a blend of performance and comfort. Key trims include the SL400, SL550, SL63 AMG, and SL65 AMG. New, the price ranged roughly from $85,000 to upwards of $220,000. Its retractable hardtop, refined ride, and powerful engine options make it a popular choice for those seeking open-air elegance.
The Good

The 2016 SL-Class delivers impressive performance from its potent engines. Its luxurious interior and comfortable ride appeal to those seeking refinement. While not the most fuel-efficient, its iconic design and brand cachet hold emotional appeal. Practically, it offers a retractable hardtop for year-round enjoyment and Mercedes-Benz's reputation (though not always perfectly realized) for quality.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2016 SL-Class include higher maintenance costs associated with a luxury vehicle. Some owners have reported issues with the complex retractable hardtop mechanism. The rear seats are virtually non-existent, limiting practicality. Finally, its considerable price tag, even on the used market, can be a deterrent. Be sure to check for any hydraulic leaks related to the top.

What Problems Does the 2016 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class Have?

While the 2016 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class generally enjoys a decent reputation, some recurring problems have been reported. Issues with the retractable hardtop mechanism, including hydraulic leaks and malfunctions, are not uncommon and can be costly to repair. Electrical glitches, particularly related to the infotainment system and driver-assistance features, have also been noted. Some owners have reported problems with the Active Body Control (ABC) suspension, which can lead to a bouncy or uneven ride.

Specifically, some earlier model years within the SL-Class generation (including some close to 2016) experienced issues with the engine management system and transmission software, although these were often addressed through software updates. It's crucial to check the vehicle's service history for any relevant recalls or Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) related to these concerns. Pre-purchase inspections by a qualified Mercedes-Benz technician are highly recommended to identify any potential problems before committing to a purchase. Long-term reliability can be affected by regular maintenance and proper care, but the complex systems in the SL-Class mean that upkeep can be expensive.

How long will the 2016 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class last?

With proper maintenance, a 2016 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class can reasonably be expected to provide 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-15 years of service. However, long-term durability depends heavily on maintenance habits. Neglecting scheduled services, especially those related to the hydraulic systems (for the top and ABC suspension), can lead to premature failure. The complex electronics and sophisticated systems, while initially impressive, can become sources of problems as the car ages. Regular fluid changes, careful attention to any warning lights, and addressing minor issues promptly are crucial for maximizing the lifespan of the vehicle. Corrosion, while less of a concern than in older models, can still occur in areas prone to road salt exposure.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2016 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class boasts a wealth of built-in tech and safety features. Standard equipment includes the COMAND infotainment system with a central display screen, navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, and a rearview camera. Driver-assistance features include active brake assist, attention assist, and parking sensors.

Optional features included a premium Harman Kardon sound system, a panoramic sunroof, and the Driver Assistance Package, which added adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and cross-traffic alert. The Magic Sky Control roof, which allows the driver to adjust the transparency of the glass roof, was also a popular option.

Safety features included multiple airbags, stability control, and anti-lock brakes. While the NHTSA and IIHS did not specifically crash-test the 2016 SL-Class, Mercedes-Benz vehicles generally perform well in safety tests. However, due to the low production volume and the nature of the vehicle (a convertible), it was not subjected to full testing. The robust construction and advanced safety systems contribute to a feeling of security.

2016 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2016 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class ranged from approximately $85,000 for the SL400 to over $220,000 for the SL65 AMG. As of late 2023/early 2024, used market prices vary considerably based on mileage, condition, and trim level. Expect to find SL400 models in the $35,000-$45,000 range, while SL550s can range from $40,000-$55,000. AMG models command higher prices. Depreciation is significant, especially in the first few years. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, service history, and the presence of desirable options. AMG models typically hold their value better than the base SL400.

2016 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class Cost of Ownership

Owning a 2016 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class is not economical. Insurance costs are higher than average due to the vehicle's value and performance. Fuel costs can be significant, particularly with the V8 and V12 engines. Maintenance and repair costs are also high, as parts and labor for Mercedes-Benz vehicles are typically more expensive. Long-term ownership costs can be considerable, especially if major repairs are needed. Budgeting for regular maintenance and potential unforeseen issues is essential.

reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2016 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2016 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class competes with luxury roadsters like the BMW 6 Series Convertible (though it blurred the line between roadster and grand tourer), Jaguar F-Type Convertible, and Porsche 911 Cabriolet. In terms of performance, the AMG models offer comparable or superior power to their rivals. Features are generally competitive, although some rivals might offer more advanced technology. Reliability is where the SL-Class can lag behind, with the Porsche 911 often considered more dependable. The BMW 6 Series offered a slightly more practical rear seat (though still small) and a more modern infotainment system at the time.

Price-wise, the SL-Class is generally in line with its competitors, but depreciation can make used models more appealing. Alternatives to consider include the Porsche 911 Cabriolet for its superior handling and reliability, or the BMW 6 Series Convertible for a slightly more practical and modern grand touring experience. The Jaguar F-Type offers a more visceral and engaging driving experience, but can be less refined. Ultimately, the best choice depends on individual priorities and preferences.

Final Verdict: Is the 2016 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class a Good Sedan?

The 2016 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class is ideal for those seeking a luxurious and stylish roadster with a retractable hardtop, providing open-air enjoyment and year-round usability. It's best suited for individuals or couples who prioritize comfort and performance over practicality. Whether it's worth buying depends on your budget and tolerance for potentially higher maintenance costs. A used model offers significantly better value than a new one, but a thorough pre-purchase inspection is crucial. The SL550 strikes a good balance between performance and price, while the AMG models cater to those seeking ultimate performance. Consider a well-maintained example with a comprehensive service history to mitigate potential reliability issues.

Real head turner with the top up or down

Sl400 is really a great car, comfortable, fast, reliable, well put together, little low to the ground so a little harder to get in and out of but once inside the car you don’t feel like it low and lot of room inside, love this car.

Awesome ride.

I have an SLK350 and want something newer/roomier. The SL is the perfect upgrade for me. Can't wait until I see the deal I like.

Sleek design, very advanced

I bought this vehicle for my wife. She fell in love with the look and I couldnt get her to look at any other cars. This is a great GT car and has EVERY creature comfort out there. Its a very smooth ride and is very fast. I would say if I could go back I would spec out a SL400 for her because she doesnt need, or use the 449 hp and 513 lb of torque. I couldlve saved 20k. With all the technology on it it can sometimes get confusing but over time Ive figured it out. If you are looking for a great GT car this is it, but if you are looking for a sports car, this isnt it. Buy a AMG GT.

If you want a hard top convertible...this is it!

MBZ has been making the SL for 50+ years and the build quality, style and performance are excellent. If you are looking for a top of the line hard top that converts to a convertible, I highly recommend you test drive an SL.
