Simon A | March 31, 2025

Key trims include ST, SLT, Laramie, and Power Wagon. Known for its robust build, powerful Cummins diesel option, and strong towing capacity, the Ram 2500 appeals to those needing a capable work truck. New pricing ranged from approximately $25,000 to $45,000 depending on configuration and trim.

What Problems Does the 2007 Dodge Ram 2500 Have?

The 2007 Dodge Ram 2500 has several frequently reported problems. Front-end suspension issues, particularly with ball joints and tie rod ends, are common, requiring regular inspection and replacement. Rust, especially in colder climates where road salt is used, is a significant concern. The rear differential can experience leaks. Electrical issues, including those related to the TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module), can cause a variety of problems, from lights malfunctioning to starting issues. Some owners have reported issues with the automatic transmission, specifically with shifting smoothness and longevity, especially when subjected to heavy towing. Recalls have been issued for various issues, including airbag inflators and fuel system components; checking the vehicle's VIN with NHTSA is crucial. Long-term reliability hinges on regular maintenance. Diesel models, while durable, can be expensive to repair if neglected. The 5.9L Cummins is generally considered more reliable than the later 6.7L due to its simpler design, but both require proper care. The 2007 model year isn't particularly noted for specific unique issues compared to other years in the 3rd generation, but the age of the vehicle means wear and tear is a primary concern across all systems.

How long will the 2007 Dodge Ram 2500 last?

Given proper maintenance, a 2007 Dodge Ram 2500 can easily exceed 200,000 miles or provide 15+ years of service. The Cummins diesel engines are known for their longevity, often surpassing 300,000 miles with regular oil changes and maintenance. However, neglect can drastically shorten its lifespan. Weaknesses include rust, front-end suspension components, and electrical gremlins that can appear over time. Regular inspection of these areas, along with preventative maintenance like fluid changes and component replacements, is crucial for long-term durability. Vehicles used primarily for heavy towing or off-roading will likely experience more wear and tear, impacting their overall lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2007 Dodge Ram 2500's built-in tech and entertainment features are relatively basic compared to modern vehicles. Standard features generally include an AM/FM radio with a CD player. Higher trims like the Laramie offer upgraded sound systems and sometimes a navigation system, which was rudimentary by today's standards. Driver-assistance features are limited; antilock brakes (ABS) are standard. Electronic stability control (ESC) may be available on some trims, but it wasn't universally included. Safety features include front airbags; side airbags were optional.

Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) should be researched using the specific cab configuration (regular, quad, crew) as results can vary. Generally, the truck performed adequately in frontal crash tests, but side-impact protection was weaker without the optional side airbags.

Optional features could include things like power-adjustable pedals, sunroof, and rear-seat DVD entertainment system. The technology and safety features are dated, so buyers should prioritize mechanical condition and maintenance history over cutting-edge technology when considering a 2007 Ram 2500.

2007 Dodge Ram 2500 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2007 Dodge Ram 2500 ranged from around $25,000 for a base ST model to $45,000+ for a fully-loaded Laramie or Power Wagon with the Cummins diesel. Current used market prices vary widely based on condition, mileage, and engine. Expect to pay anywhere from $10,000 to $30,000 or more, depending on these factors. Depreciation has been significant, but well-maintained diesel models hold their value relatively well due to their demand and longevity. Factors affecting resale value include: engine (diesel commands a premium), trim level (Laramie and Power Wagon are more desirable), condition (minimal rust and well-maintained), mileage, and location (trucks are more popular in rural areas).

2007 Dodge Ram 2500 Cost of Ownership

The 2007 Dodge Ram 2500 is generally a costly vehicle to own. Insurance premiums can be higher due to its size and potential repair costs. Fuel economy is poor, especially with the gasoline engines. Maintenance, especially on diesel models, can be expensive due to specialized parts and labor. Repairs can be frequent as the vehicle ages, particularly concerning suspension and electrical components. Long-term ownership costs are significantly higher than smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles. Budgeting for potential repairs is crucial.

2007 Dodge Ram 2500 Insurance

Insurance for a 2007 Dodge Ram 2500 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Pickup Truck with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2007 Dodge Ram 2500 Compare to Other Pickup Truck?

The 2007 Dodge Ram 2500 competes with the Ford F-250 and Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD. In terms of performance, the Ram's Cummins diesel offered strong torque and towing capabilities, arguably on par or slightly better than the Duramax diesel in the Silverado and the Power Stroke diesel in the F-250. Feature-wise, the Ram lagged behind slightly, particularly in interior refinement and available technology. Reliability is a mixed bag; while the Cummins is durable, other components can be problematic. The Ford Super Duty is generally considered slightly more reliable overall, while the Silverado HD offers a more comfortable ride. Price-wise, the Ram was often competitively priced when new, but used prices reflect its age and condition.

Alternatives depend on priorities. If diesel performance is paramount, the Ram 2500 is a good choice, particularly with the Cummins engine. For greater overall reliability and a more modern interior, a later model Ford F-250 or Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD might be a better option, albeit at a higher price point. Consider a Toyota Tundra if reliability is your number one concern but understand that towing capacity may not meet the Ram's capability.

Final Verdict: Is the 2007 Dodge Ram 2500 a Good Pickup Truck?

The 2007 Dodge Ram 2500 is ideal for buyers needing a capable heavy-duty truck for towing and hauling, particularly if they value the Cummins diesel engine's performance. It's worth buying *used* if you find a well-maintained example with documented service history, especially a diesel model. Prioritize models with minimal rust and a solid maintenance record. Avoid neglected trucks, as repairs can be costly. The Laramie trim offers more comfort, but the ST or SLT trims are sufficient for work purposes. Consider a pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic before committing to a purchase. If reliability and modern features are priorities, consider newer alternatives, but expect to pay a premium.

always wanted a 5.9

Bought the truck for the 5.9 Cummins motor and its sound. I am very pleased with the truck. bought a 2007 with 93K miles on it in 2021, body was mint, Florida truck, no rust. I am pleased with it so far, only minor issues and ones I can repair in my home garage.

This truck has been outstanding. Owned one since 2007 and it will tow anything, is very comfortable, has been very reliable and still a great looking truck! The 5.9L Cummins is simply one of the best diesel engines ever put in a pickup.

Very strong and reliable I have put 200,000 kms

Very strong drivetrain and overall body is solid I've put lotta miles on my truck I have had no problems with it at all not even with lightbulbs. I highly recommend Dodge Truck to anyone looking for a pick up truck. I had Diesel fords in the past and some GM's and they are not comparable to this product

Can't beat the 6.7 Cummins Turbo diesel!

This drive train is awesome. Strong and dependable. Truck is very clean with minimal wear & tear. Engine has always had either Amsoil or Mobil 1 Synthetic lubricants.

Very fine truck for someone looking to haul anythi

This is a very strong truck that has power and torque to spare. I did not buy the top of the line luxury model, but an SLT comes well appointed. I'm sure to get many miles and journeys out of this truck.

A true lemon

This particular car(not rams in general) is a nightmare. Slips out of gear in reverse, and worse suddenly dies while driving, which could be fatal!

All the power you will ever need.

The best word to describe this truck would be ...its a BEAST! Ive had the older 5.9 Cummins before and I thought I knew what power was. The torque and power of the 6.7 Cummins is just obscene. Ive been able to tow up a steep grade pulling a double car trailer, the truck full of people, tools, equipment, fuel, with the AC on.....in 6th gear. Like nothing....as if I wasnt pulling anything at all. As if that wasn't enough....25mpg! On the highway this truck is a dream. I will admit the stick shift can be a pain in the xxx in traffic and on the street. Suspension is kind of stiff, but then again its a work truck. When you drive it you, take on on 2nd gear, not 1st. If you need a super powerful truck to tow with...there is nothing else that comes even close. Also, this year does not require the bothersome DEF fluid additive. You will not regret buying this truck for your heavy duty needs. The automatics go through the transmissions every few years because of so much power. Get the stick shift!
