The Good
The 2009 Dodge Ram 2500 offers powerful performance, especially with the Cummins diesel. Its rugged design and high towing capacity appeal to practical buyers, while the comfortable interior (especially in higher trims) and bold styling cater to emotional preferences. Solid axle reliability offers peace of mind, though fuel efficiency isn't a strong suit.
The Bad
Potential weaknesses of the 2009 Dodge Ram 2500 include rust, especially in areas with road salt. Front-end suspension components, particularly ball joints and steering linkages, are known wear items. Fuel economy, especially with the gas engines, is relatively poor. Check for transmission issues, especially with higher mileage vehicles.
2009 Dodge Ram 2500: Quick Overview
- Engine Options:
- 5.7L Hemi V8: Approximately 345 horsepower
- 6.7L Cummins Turbo Diesel I6: Approximately 350 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque
- 5.9L Cummins Turbo Diesel I6 (early 2009 models): Approximately 325 horsepower and 610 lb-ft of torque
- Horsepower: Varies depending on the engine (see above).
- Fuel Economy: Poor compared to modern trucks. Gas engines typically achieve 10-14 mpg city and 14-18 mpg highway. Diesel engines offer slightly better mileage, around 14-18 mpg city and 18-22 mpg highway, but this varies significantly based on driving habits and load.
- 0-60 Times: Not a primary focus for this truck. Expect 0-60 times in the 8-10 second range for the gas engine and slightly slower for the diesel, depending on load.
- Towing Capacity: Ranges from approximately 10,000 to 13,000 lbs depending on configuration (cab, bed, engine, and axle ratio). The Cummins diesel provides the highest towing capacity.
- Trim-Level Features:
- ST: Base model, typically with vinyl seats, basic radio, and limited features.
- SLT: Mid-range model, offering cloth seats, upgraded audio, and power windows/locks.
- Laramie: Top-tier model, featuring leather seats, premium audio, dual-zone climate control, and other luxury features.

What Problems Does the 2009 Dodge Ram 2500 Have?
Recalls have been issued for various issues, including potential problems with the fuel system, airbags, and electrical components. It's crucial to check the VIN for any outstanding recalls. Long-term reliability can be affected by the truck's usage history. Trucks that have been heavily used for towing or hauling may have experienced more wear and tear. Early 2009 models with the 5.9L Cummins are generally considered very reliable, although they lack the power and emissions controls of the 6.7L. Regular maintenance, including oil changes, filter replacements, and chassis lubrication, is essential for maximizing the truck's lifespan. Premature failure of the TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module) has also been reported, leading to various electrical problems.
How long will the 2009 Dodge Ram 2500 last?
What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Safety features include standard front airbags, anti-lock brakes (ABS), and electronic stability control (ESC). Side curtain airbags were optional. Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) should be consulted for specific information. Generally, the 2009 Ram 2500 provides adequate protection in frontal and side-impact collisions, but its rollover resistance rating is lower due to its high center of gravity.
Optional features vary depending on the trim level and include things like power-adjustable pedals, heated seats, and a sunroof. The technology is dated by modern standards, so buyers should focus on the truck's mechanical condition and maintenance history rather than advanced features. It's worth noting that aftermarket upgrades are readily available to modernize the entertainment and technology offerings.

How Does the 2009 Dodge Ram 2500 Compare to Other Pickup Truck?
Reliability is a mixed bag; the Cummins diesel is generally reliable, but the front-end suspension is a known weak point compared to the Ford's solid front axle design. The Silverado/Sierra 2500HD offers a more car-like ride. Pricewise, the Ram 2500 is often competitively priced in the used market. A similar or better alternative depends on individual needs and priorities. If a more refined ride is desired, the Ford or GM trucks might be preferred. If reliability is paramount and you can find one in good condition, an earlier 5.9L Cummins Ram 2500 (pre-2007) could be a better choice. Overall the Ram offers a strong value proposition.

It's more of a sissy truck or a xxxx Mobilethese new trucks are not designed for working, the interior is hard to clean, working out in the field using your truck the truck is going to get dirty and it's hard to clean too much sissy stuff in there my granddaughter could drive this truck, the seats are uncomfortable, and hard to clean, dash is not functional, I'm so disappointed in Dodge, I love my 1997 Dodge ram, with manual transmission, which you can't get it anymore, it was just plain truck, easy to use for working with, easy to clean out.a man was using his truck for work with one simple truck, manual transmission, powerful engine, without all the electronic gadgets, I'm not impressed with Bluetooth, or any other digital crap that's in this truck, I only bought this truck, because it was a short bed, and would fit in my garage, with my motorcycle, otherwise I never bought this truck, I like Dodge, but the manufacturers of these vehicles, have lost the original idea, making these trucks
