Rating: 4.08

The 2009 Dodge Ram 2500 is a heavy-duty pickup truck built for serious work. Part of the third generation Ram (2003-2009), it comes in regular, extended (Quad Cab), and crew cab body styles. Key trims include the ST, SLT, and Laramie. Pricing ranged from approximately $30,000 to $50,000 when new, but used values vary widely. Its robust Cummins diesel engine option and strong towing capacity made it a popular choice for those needing a capable workhorse.
The Good

The 2009 Dodge Ram 2500 offers powerful performance, especially with the Cummins diesel. Its rugged design and high towing capacity appeal to practical buyers, while the comfortable interior (especially in higher trims) and bold styling cater to emotional preferences. Solid axle reliability offers peace of mind, though fuel efficiency isn't a strong suit.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2009 Dodge Ram 2500 include rust, especially in areas with road salt. Front-end suspension components, particularly ball joints and steering linkages, are known wear items. Fuel economy, especially with the gas engines, is relatively poor. Check for transmission issues, especially with higher mileage vehicles.

2009 Dodge Ram 2500: Quick Overview

  • Engine Options:
    • 5.7L Hemi V8: Approximately 345 horsepower
    • 6.7L Cummins Turbo Diesel I6: Approximately 350 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque
    • 5.9L Cummins Turbo Diesel I6 (early 2009 models): Approximately 325 horsepower and 610 lb-ft of torque
  • Horsepower: Varies depending on the engine (see above).
  • Fuel Economy: Poor compared to modern trucks. Gas engines typically achieve 10-14 mpg city and 14-18 mpg highway. Diesel engines offer slightly better mileage, around 14-18 mpg city and 18-22 mpg highway, but this varies significantly based on driving habits and load.
  • 0-60 Times: Not a primary focus for this truck. Expect 0-60 times in the 8-10 second range for the gas engine and slightly slower for the diesel, depending on load.
  • Towing Capacity: Ranges from approximately 10,000 to 13,000 lbs depending on configuration (cab, bed, engine, and axle ratio). The Cummins diesel provides the highest towing capacity.
  • Trim-Level Features:
    • ST: Base model, typically with vinyl seats, basic radio, and limited features.
    • SLT: Mid-range model, offering cloth seats, upgraded audio, and power windows/locks.
    • Laramie: Top-tier model, featuring leather seats, premium audio, dual-zone climate control, and other luxury features.

What Problems Does the 2009 Dodge Ram 2500 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2009 Dodge Ram 2500 include front-end suspension wear, particularly ball joints and steering components. Rust is a significant concern, especially in regions that use road salt. Owners should inspect the frame, body panels, and undercarriage for corrosion. The 6.7L Cummins diesel, while generally reliable, can experience issues with the EGR system and diesel particulate filter (DPF), especially if not properly maintained or used primarily for short trips. Some owners have reported issues with the automatic transmission, including slipping or harsh shifting, particularly at higher mileage.

Recalls have been issued for various issues, including potential problems with the fuel system, airbags, and electrical components. It's crucial to check the VIN for any outstanding recalls. Long-term reliability can be affected by the truck's usage history. Trucks that have been heavily used for towing or hauling may have experienced more wear and tear. Early 2009 models with the 5.9L Cummins are generally considered very reliable, although they lack the power and emissions controls of the 6.7L. Regular maintenance, including oil changes, filter replacements, and chassis lubrication, is essential for maximizing the truck's lifespan. Premature failure of the TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module) has also been reported, leading to various electrical problems.

How long will the 2009 Dodge Ram 2500 last?

A well-maintained 2009 Dodge Ram 2500 can easily exceed 200,000 miles and provide over 15 years of service. However, mileage and lifespan heavily depend on maintenance habits and usage. Trucks used primarily for heavy towing or off-road adventures will likely experience more wear and tear. Common long-term durability concerns include rust, suspension component wear, and potential issues with the EGR/DPF system on diesel models. Regular oil changes, chassis lubrication, and addressing minor repairs promptly are crucial for extending the truck's lifespan. Neglecting maintenance can significantly shorten the lifespan and increase repair costs.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2009 Dodge Ram 2500's built-in tech and entertainment features are relatively basic compared to modern trucks. Standard features on lower trims typically include an AM/FM radio with a CD player. Higher trims, like the Laramie, may offer a premium sound system, satellite radio, and a navigation system (optional). Driver-assistance features are limited, with available options including rear parking sensors.

Safety features include standard front airbags, anti-lock brakes (ABS), and electronic stability control (ESC). Side curtain airbags were optional. Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) should be consulted for specific information. Generally, the 2009 Ram 2500 provides adequate protection in frontal and side-impact collisions, but its rollover resistance rating is lower due to its high center of gravity.

Optional features vary depending on the trim level and include things like power-adjustable pedals, heated seats, and a sunroof. The technology is dated by modern standards, so buyers should focus on the truck's mechanical condition and maintenance history rather than advanced features. It's worth noting that aftermarket upgrades are readily available to modernize the entertainment and technology offerings.

2009 Dodge Ram 2500 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2009 Dodge Ram 2500 ranged from approximately $30,000 to $50,000 depending on the trim, engine, and options. Current used market prices vary significantly based on condition, mileage, and location, but generally range from $15,000 to $30,000. The Cummins diesel engine commands a premium. Depreciation has been significant, but the Ram 2500 holds its value relatively well compared to some other trucks, especially diesel models. Factors affecting resale value include engine type (diesel being more desirable), overall condition, maintenance history, and mileage. Trucks with minimal rust and a clean title will command higher prices.

2009 Dodge Ram 2500 Cost of Ownership

The 2009 Dodge Ram 2500 is generally considered costly to own. Insurance premiums are typically higher than smaller vehicles. Fuel costs are significant, especially with the gas engines. Maintenance and repair costs can be substantial, particularly for diesel models or if significant repairs are needed. While basic maintenance is affordable, unexpected repairs can be expensive. Long-term ownership costs depend heavily on the truck's condition and usage but budget accordingly. Rust prevention is an important ongoing expense in some regions.

2009 Dodge Ram 2500 Insurance

Insurance for a 2009 Dodge Ram 2500 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Pickup Truck with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2009 Dodge Ram 2500 Compare to Other Pickup Truck?

The 2009 Dodge Ram 2500 competes with the Ford Super Duty (F-250) and the Chevrolet Silverado/GMC Sierra 2500HD. In terms of performance, the Ram 2500 with the Cummins diesel offers excellent towing capacity and robust power, comparable to its rivals' diesel options. The Ford Super Duty is generally considered to have a slightly more refined ride. Feature-wise, the Ram 2500 is similar to its competitors, although the base models can feel quite spartan.

Reliability is a mixed bag; the Cummins diesel is generally reliable, but the front-end suspension is a known weak point compared to the Ford's solid front axle design. The Silverado/Sierra 2500HD offers a more car-like ride. Pricewise, the Ram 2500 is often competitively priced in the used market. A similar or better alternative depends on individual needs and priorities. If a more refined ride is desired, the Ford or GM trucks might be preferred. If reliability is paramount and you can find one in good condition, an earlier 5.9L Cummins Ram 2500 (pre-2007) could be a better choice. Overall the Ram offers a strong value proposition.

Final Verdict: Is the 2009 Dodge Ram 2500 a Good Pickup Truck?

The 2009 Dodge Ram 2500 is ideal for those needing a capable heavy-duty truck for towing and hauling, particularly if they value the Cummins diesel engine. It's worth buying, used, if you find one in good condition with a well-documented maintenance history and minimal rust. Look for SLT or Laramie trims for more comfort and features. Avoid trucks that have been heavily abused or neglected. A thorough inspection by a qualified mechanic is highly recommended before purchasing. If you need a reliable work truck at a reasonable price, the 2009 Ram 2500 can be a good option, but be prepared for higher running costs and potential repairs.

It's more of a sissy truck or a xxxx Mobile

these new trucks are not designed for working, the interior is hard to clean, working out in the field using your truck the truck is going to get dirty and it's hard to clean too much sissy stuff in there my granddaughter could drive this truck, the seats are uncomfortable, and hard to clean, dash is not functional, I'm so disappointed in Dodge, I love my 1997 Dodge ram, with manual transmission, which you can't get it anymore, it was just plain truck, easy to use for working with, easy to clean out.a man was using his truck for work with one simple truck, manual transmission, powerful engine, without all the electronic gadgets, I'm not impressed with Bluetooth, or any other digital crap that's in this truck, I only bought this truck, because it was a short bed, and would fit in my garage, with my motorcycle, otherwise I never bought this truck, I like Dodge, but the manufacturers of these vehicles, have lost the original idea, making these trucks
