The 2016 BMW M5 is a high-performance sedan that blends luxury with track-ready capabilities. Part of the fifth generation (F10), it's a 4-door sedan known for its powerful engine and engaging driving dynamics. Key trims included the base M5 and the Competition Package. New pricing started around $94,000. It's popular for its balance of everyday usability and exhilarating performance, making it a favorite among enthusiasts.
The Good

The 2016 M5 offers blistering performance and a luxurious, comfortable interior, appealing to both practical and emotional buyers. While not the most fuel-efficient, its striking design and strong resale value are definite advantages. Reliability can be good with proper maintenance. The driving experience is a key emotional draw, while practicality stems from its four-door sedan configuration.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses include higher running costs due to premium fuel and maintenance requirements. Oil leaks and electronic glitches can occur. The complicated twin-turbo engine requires meticulous care. The car's hefty weight can sometimes diminish agility compared to smaller sports cars. Watch out for worn suspension components and brake issues.

What Problems Does the 2016 BMW M5 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2016 BMW M5 often revolve around its complex systems. Oil leaks from the engine and turbochargers are common concerns, requiring diligent monitoring and maintenance. Electronic glitches, such as issues with the iDrive system, sensors, and control modules, have also been reported.
Long-term reliability can be affected by the stress placed on the engine components due to its high-performance nature. Regular maintenance, including frequent oil changes and inspections, is crucial to mitigate potential problems.
Recalls for the 2016 model year have addressed issues like fuel pump failures and potential problems with the passenger-side airbag. Checking the vehicle's VIN on the NHTSA website is recommended to determine if any recalls apply.
Owners have also reported issues with the active suspension components, which can be expensive to repair. Some have cited concerns about the durability of the dual-clutch transmission, especially with aggressive driving habits. The VANOS system, responsible for variable valve timing, can also experience problems over time, potentially leading to performance issues.

How long will the 2016 BMW M5 last?

With consistent and proactive maintenance, a 2016 BMW M5 can realistically provide 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-15 years of service. However, this relies heavily on adherence to BMW's recommended service schedule and addressing issues promptly. Long-term durability is generally good if preventative maintenance is prioritized. Weaknesses over time typically involve wear and tear on suspension components, potential oil leaks, and electronic malfunctions. The longevity of the engine and transmission is significantly impacted by driving style and maintenance.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2016 BMW M5 comes standard with a host of technology and safety features. Built-in tech includes BMW's iDrive infotainment system with a 10.2-inch display, navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, and a premium audio system. Entertainment features include SiriusXM satellite radio and USB input.
Driver-assistance features include parking sensors, a rearview camera, and adaptive headlights. Optional driver-assistance systems include lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, and active driving assistant.
Safety features include antilock brakes, stability control, traction control, front airbags, side airbags, and side curtain airbags.
Optional features include a Bang & Olufsen sound system, night vision with pedestrian detection, and the Executive Package, which adds features such as a heated steering wheel, power rear sunshade, and ventilated front seats.
Crash test ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA are generally positive, although specific ratings for the 2016 M5 may vary. It's recommended to consult these agencies' websites for the most accurate and up-to-date information.

2016 BMW M5 Prices and Market Value

The 2016 BMW M5 had a starting MSRP of around $94,000 when new. Current used market prices typically range from $30,000 to $45,000, depending on mileage, condition, and options. Depreciation is significant for performance sedans. Factors affecting resale value include the car's condition, mileage, service history, and the presence of desirable options like the Competition Package. Cars with a clean title and comprehensive service records command higher prices.

2016 BMW M5 Cost of Ownership

The 2016 BMW M5 is a costly vehicle to own. Insurance premiums are high due to its performance capabilities. Fuel costs are substantial, requiring premium gasoline. Maintenance and repair costs are also elevated, given the complex engine and specialized parts. Long-term ownership requires a commitment to preventative maintenance to avoid expensive repairs. It is not an economical vehicle, but rather caters to owners prioritizing performance and luxury over cost-effectiveness.

2016 BMW M5 Insurance

Insurance for a 2016 BMW M5 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2016 BMW M5 Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2016 BMW M5 competes with vehicles like the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG, Audi RS7, and Cadillac CTS-V. In terms of performance, the M5 offers a compelling balance of power and handling, but the E63 AMG provides comparable horsepower and torque. The Audi RS7 boasts a sleek design and standard all-wheel drive.
Feature-wise, the M5 is well-equipped, but its rivals offer similar levels of luxury and technology. Reliability is a key consideration, and while the M5 can be reliable with proper care, the E63 AMG and RS7 may have a slight edge in some areas. Price-wise, these vehicles are all in a similar range, though specific used market prices can vary.
As for alternatives, if reliability is paramount, an Acura TLX Type S (newer model year) might be a better choice, sacrificing some performance for enhanced dependability and lower running costs. If all-out performance is the priority, a newer E63 AMG could be a superior option. The Cadillac CTS-V offers similar performance at a potentially lower price point, but may not match the M5's level of refinement.

Final Verdict: Is the 2016 BMW M5 a Good Sedan?

The 2016 BMW M5 is ideal for enthusiasts seeking a high-performance sedan with a blend of luxury and practicality. It's worth buying used if you're willing to invest in proper maintenance and understand the potential for higher running costs. Consider a well-maintained example with a comprehensive service history. The Competition Package offers a slightly more engaging driving experience, but the base M5 is still a capable performer. Avoid neglected examples or those with questionable maintenance records. It's a fantastic car for those who appreciate the driving experience and are prepared for the associated ownership costs.

Bmw m5 is a Beast on wheels

I am a automotive mechanic and have been looking for an amazing car. Test drove GTR, SHELBY GT500, CORVETTE, SUPRA ECT. Never thought that a 4 door Sedan like an F10 M5 machine would change my mind on the whole situation. This is by far the best car you can get for the money and none of the others can even keep up with it

Most Bang for you buck. Real Head turner

The vehicle is built for not your average driver but even the most avid can handle the power it provides. Most think when they need a super car they must go for the most expensive and most fast well in this case you are getting a big bang for your buck many people need a family car but some also want that family car to be track ready. That is what you get with this elegant sleek , extravagant car.
