Rating: 4.78
Based on 12 Owner Reviews â–¶
Cathleen V | March 31, 2025
The 2010 BMW M3 represents the fourth generation (E90/E92/E93) of BMW's high-performance icon. Available as a sedan (E90), coupe (E92), and convertible (E93), the M3 was produced from 2007-2013. Key trims include the base model and various special editions like the Competition Package. New, it ranged from approximately $55,000 to $75,000 depending on the body style and options. Its naturally aspirated V8 engine and balanced handling make it a highly sought-after driver's car. The M3 is popular due to its blend of performance, luxury, and daily usability.
The Good

The 2010 BMW M3 offers exceptional performance from its high-revving V8, appealing to enthusiasts. Its comfortable interior and stylish design provide a luxurious experience. While not the most fuel-efficient, its reliability (when properly maintained) and relative value on the used market make it a practical choice. The M3 provides a unique driving experience that many owners find emotionally rewarding.

The Bad

Known weaknesses of the 2010 BMW M3 include potential rod bearing issues, throttle actuators failing, and early signs of wear on the electronic damper control (EDC) system. Watch out for oil leaks, especially around the valve covers and oil pan. Fuel consumption can be high, and some maintenance costs can be expensive, particularly for specialized parts and labor.

Analysis

What Problems Does the 2010 BMW M3 Have?

The 2010 BMW M3, while generally reliable, has some frequently reported problems. One of the most significant concerns is the potential for rod bearing failure in the S65 V8 engine. This issue can lead to catastrophic engine damage if not addressed. Many owners proactively replace the rod bearings as preventative maintenance. Another common issue is throttle actuator failure, which can cause reduced engine power and require expensive repairs. The electronic damper control (EDC) system can also experience failures over time, leading to suspension issues. Oil leaks, particularly around the valve covers and oil pan, are also relatively common.
There have been a few recalls for the E90/E92/E93 M3 platform, including recalls related to the battery cable connection and potential fuel pump issues. Checking the vehicle's VIN for outstanding recalls is crucial before purchasing. Long-term reliability concerns revolve around the age of the car and the potential for wear and tear on various components, including the cooling system, drivetrain, and electronics. Consistent maintenance and addressing issues promptly are key to mitigating these risks. There aren't significant model year-specific issues that stand out for 2010 compared to other years within the E9x generation.

How long will the 2010 BMW M3 last?

Given diligent maintenance, a 2010 BMW M3 can easily exceed 150,000 miles or 15+ years of service. Many examples reach well beyond that with proper care. Key to longevity is addressing known issues like rod bearings proactively and adhering to a strict maintenance schedule, including frequent oil changes and cooling system servicing. Long-term weaknesses often manifest as wear and tear on suspension components, drivetrain bushings, and potential electronics failures. The S65 engine, while robust, requires specialized care to ensure long-term durability. Cars with neglected maintenance will likely have shorter lifespans and increased repair costs.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2010 BMW M3 came with a respectable array of built-in tech for its time. Standard features included a premium audio system, automatic climate control, and xenon headlights. Optional features significantly enhanced the experience, such as the navigation system with iDrive, BMW Assist telematics, and voice control. Entertainment was primarily handled by the audio system, with options for satellite radio and iPod integration.
Driver-assistance features were relatively limited compared to modern cars, but included dynamic stability control (DSC) and anti-lock brakes (ABS). Optional features like rear parking sensors were available.
Safety features included multiple airbags (front, side, and curtain), active head restraints, and a strong body structure. The 2010 BMW M3 received generally positive crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). For the coupe, the NHTSA awarded 4 out of 5 stars for frontal crash protection and 5 out of 5 stars for side crash protection. The IIHS gave the coupe a "Good" rating in frontal offset and side impact crash tests. It's important to note that specific ratings can vary based on body style (sedan, coupe, convertible) and the testing methodology at the time.

2010 BMW M3 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2010 BMW M3 ranged from approximately $55,000 to $75,000, depending on body style and options. As of late 2023/early 2024, used market prices typically range from $25,000 to $45,000 or more, depending on condition, mileage, and history. The M3 has depreciated considerably, but its value has stabilized somewhat due to its desirability as a modern classic. Factors affecting resale value include: mileage, condition (mechanical and cosmetic), service history, number of previous owners, transmission type (manuals tend to fetch a premium), and optional equipment (Competition Package is highly desirable). Well-maintained examples with clean titles command higher prices.

2010 BMW M3 Cost of Ownership

Owning a 2010 BMW M3 is generally considered costly. Insurance premiums are higher than average due to its performance capabilities. Fuel costs are also significant, given its relatively low fuel economy. Maintenance and repairs can be expensive, especially for specialized parts and labor. The potential for rod bearing issues adds to the long-term cost. While not economical, the M3 offers a unique driving experience that some owners find worth the higher ownership costs. Budgeting for potential repairs is crucial.

2010 BMW M3 Insurance

Insurance for a 2010 BMW M3 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2010 BMW M3 Compare to Other Sedan?

Key rivals to the 2010 BMW M3 included the Audi RS4 (B7 generation), Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG (W204 generation), and Cadillac CTS-V. In terms of performance, the M3's high-revving V8 offered a unique character compared to the C63 AMG's more powerful but less refined V8. The RS4, while offering all-wheel drive, was generally considered less engaging to drive. The CTS-V provided comparable power at a potentially lower price point.
In terms of features, all offered similar levels of luxury and technology, although the BMW iDrive system was often criticized for its complexity. Reliability is a mixed bag; the M3's rod bearing issue is a concern, while the C63 AMG could have head bolt issues. The CTS-V was generally considered more reliable.
Price-wise, the M3 sat in a competitive range. Alternatives depend on priorities. For pure power, the C63 AMG or CTS-V might be preferable. For all-weather capability, the Audi RS4 could be considered. For a well-rounded sports sedan with a focus on driving dynamics, the M3 remains a strong choice, although potential buyers should be aware of the maintenance requirements and potential expenses. A well maintained Porsche Cayman S from the same era could be considered for someone seeking performance and engagement without the rear passenger seats.

Final Verdict: Is the 2010 BMW M3 a Good Sedan?

The 2010 BMW M3 is ideal for driving enthusiasts who appreciate a naturally aspirated engine, balanced handling, and a blend of performance and luxury. It's worth buying, especially on the used market, if you're prepared for higher maintenance costs and potential repairs. Buying a well-maintained example with a thorough service history is crucial. The Competition Package is highly desirable for its improved handling. Consider a pre-purchase inspection by a BMW specialist to assess the condition of the engine (especially rod bearings), throttle actuators, and other critical components. If you are seeking maximum reliability and lower running costs, then this may not be the right car for you.

VERY reliable! Can't get any better bang for buck

I love this vehicle. For the price, there is no other better performing vehicle on the market. Awesome handling and sleek look. Definitely an eye catcher. Naturally aspirated V8 BMW M3. Awesome growl with stock exhaust. Highly recommended for any car enthusiast at any level. I can't say enough good things about the car. The interior isn't as luxurious as other cars, but it just screams "lets get down to business." You will not go wrong with this awesome beast of a vehicle. I love it!
