2008 Scion xB Review: A Low-Maintenance Compact That Feels Like a Small SUV

Rating: 0.00
Based on 0 Owner Reviews
Cathleen V | March 31, 2025
The 2008 Scion xB is a compact, boxy wagon known for its distinctive styling and spacious interior. Part of the second xB generation (2008-2015), it offered a unique alternative to traditional compact cars. It was available in a single, well-equipped trim level. New, the xB retailed around $16,000-$18,000. Its popularity stemmed from its practicality, affordability, and customizable nature. Its standout boxy shape made it instantly recognizable.
The Good

The 2008 Scion xB offers a blend of practicality and style. Its reliable Toyota-based engine provides adequate performance for daily driving. The spacious interior and comfortable seats appeal to practical buyers, while the unique boxy design and customization options attract those seeking something different and expressive. It's a good value for the money.

The Bad

The 2008 Scion xB isn't without its flaws. Some owners have reported issues with oil consumption. The boxy design can result in noticeable wind noise at highway speeds. The fuel economy, while acceptable, isn't class-leading. Check for rust, especially in areas with harsh winters. The turning radius isn't great.

Analysis

What Problems Does the 2008 Scion xB Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2008 Scion xB often revolve around excessive oil consumption. Some owners have noted that the engine can consume oil at a higher rate than expected, requiring more frequent top-offs between oil changes. This issue, while not universally present, is a common concern. Also some owners have reported premature water pump failure.
Other areas of concern include potential for rust, particularly in regions with road salt use. Checking the undercarriage and body panels for corrosion is advisable when considering a used xB.
Wind noise at highway speeds is also frequently mentioned, stemming from the boxy design. While not a mechanical issue, it can affect driving comfort.
Recalls for the 2008 Scion xB have included issues related to floor mat entrapment of the accelerator pedal (part of the larger Toyota recall affecting many models). Checking the vehicle's VIN against recall databases is important to ensure any necessary repairs have been performed.
Long-term reliability is generally considered good, largely due to its Toyota underpinnings. Regular maintenance is key to mitigating potential issues and ensuring longevity. The water pump issues mentioned above and oil consumption are something to keep an eye on.

How long will the 2008 Scion xB last?

With proper maintenance, a 2008 Scion xB can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report exceeding this mark with regular servicing. Good maintenance habits, including timely oil changes, fluid checks, and addressing minor repairs promptly, significantly contribute to its longevity.
Over time, weaknesses such as increased oil consumption (as mentioned earlier), suspension component wear (struts, bushings), and potential for rust become more prominent. Replacing worn parts as needed and addressing rust proactively can extend the vehicle's lifespan. The key to long-term durability lies in consistent upkeep.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2008 Scion xB offered a decent array of tech and safety features for its time. Standard entertainment included a Pioneer AM/FM/CD stereo with MP3/WMA playback and an auxiliary audio input for connecting external devices. Upgraded audio systems with subwoofers were available as optional accessories.
Built-in tech was fairly basic, focusing on core functionality rather than advanced features. Navigation was available as a dealer-installed option, not a factory-integrated system.
Driver-assistance features were limited, primarily consisting of standard cruise control. There were no advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) like lane departure warning or blind-spot monitoring.
Safety features were more comprehensive, including standard anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic stability control (VSC), traction control (TRAC), front airbags, side airbags, and side curtain airbags. These features contributed to decent crash-test ratings.
The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) crash-test ratings for the 2008 Scion xB were generally good, earning four stars for frontal crash protection (driver and passenger) and five stars for side crash protection (front and rear occupants). The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) gave the xB a "Good" rating in frontal offset and side-impact crash tests.
Overall, the 2008 xB prioritized essential safety and entertainment features over cutting-edge technology, aligning with its focus on affordability and practicality.

2008 Scion xB Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2008 Scion xB had a base MSRP of around $16,000 to $18,000 depending on options and destination charges. As of late 2023, used market prices typically range from $4,000 to $8,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location.
The xB has depreciated considerably over the years, which is typical for older vehicles. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition (especially rust), maintenance history, and the presence of desirable options. Well-maintained examples with lower mileage and clean titles command higher prices. The quirky styling can both help and hurt resale; some buyers are drawn to it, while others are not.

2008 Scion xB Cost of Ownership

The 2008 Scion xB is generally economical to own. Insurance costs are typically moderate. Fuel economy, while not exceptional, is reasonable for its size and class. Maintenance costs are generally low, thanks to its Toyota-based reliability. Repair costs can be higher for certain issues (e.g., oil consumption remediation), but overall, it's considered an affordable vehicle to maintain in the long run. Parts are readily available and relatively inexpensive. Routine maintenance is key to keeping overall costs down.

2008 Scion xB Insurance

Insurance for a 2008 Scion xB is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2008 Scion xB Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2008 Scion xB competed with vehicles like the Honda Element, Kia Soul (though the Soul debuted later), Nissan Cube, and even some smaller SUVs. Compared to the Honda Element, the xB was more fuel-efficient but offered less cargo space and off-road capability. The Nissan Cube shared a similar boxy aesthetic, but the xB had slightly better performance and a more refined interior.
In terms of reliability, the xB held up well against most competitors, thanks to its Toyota engineering. Feature-wise, it was generally comparable, though some rivals offered more advanced tech options (especially in later model years).
Price-wise, the xB was competitive, offering good value for the money. As for alternatives, a used Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla could be considered for better fuel economy and similar reliability, albeit with a less distinctive design. The Kia Soul (later models) offers a similar blend of style and practicality with more modern features. Ultimately, the best alternative depends on individual priorities – cargo space, fuel efficiency, or cutting-edge technology.

Ranks #61 Wagon

Final Verdict: Is the 2008 Scion xB a Good Sedan?

The 2008 Scion xB is ideal for buyers seeking a practical, affordable, and uniquely styled vehicle. It's a good choice for city dwellers and those prioritizing interior space over ultimate fuel efficiency or performance. It's definitely worth buying as a used vehicle, given its depreciation and inherent reliability. Look for examples with a clean title, documented maintenance history, and minimal rust. Be sure to inspect for any signs of excessive oil consumption. Avoid highly modified examples unless you know what you are getting into. If well-maintained, a used 2008 xB can offer years of reliable service at a reasonable cost.
