2011 GMC Terrain Review: Bad Year for the Overpriced and Problem Ridden Used SUV

Rating: 3.70
Based on 100 Owner Reviews β–Ά
Cathleen V | March 31, 2025
The 2011 GMC Terrain is a compact crossover SUV that debuted in 2010 as part of the first generation (2010-2017). Key trims included the SLE and SLT. With its distinctive, boxy styling that set it apart from competitors and a relatively affordable price range (originally around $25,000-$35,000), the Terrain aimed to offer a more refined and upscale alternative in the crowded small SUV segment. Its bold styling and comfortable ride made it a popular choice.
The Good

The 2011 GMC Terrain offers a comfortable ride and distinctive styling, appealing to emotional buyers seeking a stylish SUV. Practically, it provides decent fuel efficiency with the four-cylinder engine. Good cargo space and available all-wheel drive enhance its utility. While not a performance leader, it provides adequate power for daily driving.

The Bad

The 2011 GMC Terrain has known issues. Watch out for excessive oil consumption, particularly with the 2.4L engine. Potential problems with the timing chain and variable valve timing systems exist. Some owners have reported issues with the air conditioning system and the electrical system. Consider a thorough inspection before purchasing.

What Problems Does the 2011 GMC Terrain Have?

Frequently reported problems with the 2011 GMC Terrain center around the 2.4L Ecotec engine. Excessive oil consumption is a common complaint, potentially leading to engine damage if not monitored and addressed. Some owners have reported needing to add oil frequently between oil changes. Timing chain issues are also a concern, and can be expensive to repair. Variable valve timing (VVT) actuator problems have also been reported. The 3.0L V6 engine is generally considered more reliable, but fuel economy suffers. Other reported issues include problems with the air conditioning system, particularly the compressor, and electrical issues, such as malfunctioning sensors and control modules. Recalls for the 2011 Terrain have included issues related to the windshield wiper motor and potential fuel leaks. Long-term reliability is a concern due to the engine issues, so careful maintenance and regular oil level checks are critical. Owners should also be aware of potential transmission issues as the vehicle ages. It is important to research any specific vehicle's history thoroughly before purchasing. Always get a pre-purchase inspection from a trusted mechanic.

How long will the 2011 GMC Terrain last?

With proper maintenance, a 2011 GMC Terrain can potentially reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles, or 12-15 years of service. However, the 2.4L engine's oil consumption issue can significantly impact its lifespan if not addressed. Regular oil changes, timely repairs, and careful monitoring are crucial. The transmission and other mechanical components can also develop wear and tear over time, requiring attention. Vehicles with documented maintenance records tend to last longer. Rust can also be a factor, particularly in areas with harsh winters.

Bought this car in 2011 from New. My first one was in an accident and was a right off. I could of bought any vehicle I wanted but went back to the Terrain. Would still purchase this car again. I did 6 years of driving from Ontario to Florida without a single issue. Lots of space for luggage or any other stuff. Great millage.

I have a 2011 SLT2 package with the V6. I bought it used with 80k miles, it now has 176k. I bought it 8 years ago and I’ve only had your typical upkeep up until recently. Last year I had to replace the AC ( I live in Florida so to me it being 12 years old wasn’t a big deal) I now have some lights on where the sensors are needing to be replaced and the hydraulic arm for the trunk is starting to go out. Again, considering this car is up in miles and has been very well loved for 8 years I consider this your typical upkeep on a car. I LOVE my Terrain. It has been very reliable, it is comfortable and I’m considering getting a new one but still keeping this one.

Transmission went at 98,000. Had complained right after buying car. Car would bog down on take off. Dealer said they all did this. No recall by gm. Excessive oil use. Was a recall but gm did not contact owners of recall. When I found out the recall date was over. Had to get engine rebuilt. Faulty piston rings

Purchase in 2011 in 2012 with 4000 miles. Been to shop 10 times, replaced engine, Cadillac converter, belts. Pistols..etc. now transition and engine gone bad. Broke down on my way out of town with no oil on Monday after getting oil changed and filled on Sat prior. Car from xxxx

I love the look, the room in the back seat and the feel to drive my 2011 Terrain however I do have seveal complaints. There is a nasty odor that comes through the vents. It is not all the time but when you smell it, you have to roll the windows down. I have had in the shop multiple times for this- 1st time I was told I needed to replace the air filter which I did at $100, the scent was still there, took back a 2nd time and they replaced some kit that was part of other complaints and on recall. Took back a 3rd time, dealership says they cannot smell anything. I find it strange the 1st and 2nd visit to the dealership they smelled it and offered solutions. This time they do not smell it so there is nothing they can do. I was advise to bring it back when the scent is more persistant. Gas mileage is not what is advertised for this vehicle. I have yet to see 32 mpg hwy. Lucky to get 24-26 mpg hwy.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2011 GMC Terrain featured a decent array of built-in tech and safety features for its time. Standard features included a basic AM/FM/CD audio system with an auxiliary input jack, and OnStar. Higher trims offered a premium Pioneer audio system, a rearview camera, and a navigation system.

2011 GMC Terrain Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2011 GMC Terrain had an MSRP ranging from approximately $25,000 to $35,000, depending on the trim level and options. Current used market prices typically range from $5,000 to $12,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. Depreciation has been significant due to age and the known engine issues. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's maintenance history, mileage, condition, and whether or not the 2.4L engine has been properly maintained to prevent oil consumption problems. Models with the V6 engine often command a slightly higher price.

2011 GMC Terrain Cost of Ownership

The 2011 GMC Terrain's ownership costs can be moderate to high. Insurance costs are typical for a vehicle in its class. Fuel costs depend on the engine; the 2.4L offers reasonable economy, while the V6 consumes more fuel. Maintenance can be relatively affordable if the vehicle is well-maintained. However, potential repairs related to the engine (oil consumption, timing chain) can be costly. Overall, due to potential engine issues, it's not the most economical vehicle to own long-term.

2011 GMC Terrain Insurance

Insurance for a 2011 GMC Terrain is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2011 GMC Terrain Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2011 GMC Terrain competed with vehicles like the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Ford Escape, and Chevrolet Equinox (its corporate twin). In terms of performance, the Terrain's 2.4L engine was adequate but not as refined as the engines in the CR-V or RAV4. The V6 offered better performance but poorer fuel economy. Features were comparable, though the CR-V and RAV4 often had a slight edge in available technology and reliability. The Terrain's styling was more distinctive than its rivals, appealing to some buyers. However, reliability is where the Terrain falls short, especially compared to the Honda and Toyota. The Ford Escape offered a sportier driving experience but similar reliability concerns. The Chevrolet Equinox, being mechanically similar, shares the same strengths and weaknesses as the Terrain. Alternatives to consider include the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 for their superior reliability and overall value. If styling is a major factor, the Nissan Rogue might be a similar alternative, but research its reliability as well. The Mazda CX-5 (later models) is another option for those prioritizing driving enjoyment.

Final Verdict: Is the 2011 GMC Terrain a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2011 GMC Terrain is suitable for buyers who appreciate its unique styling and comfortable ride, and are willing to accept potential reliability risks. It's worth buying *if* you can find a well-maintained example with documented service history, *preferably* with the 3.0L V6 engine. Have any potential purchase thoroughly inspected by a mechanic, paying close attention to the engine's oil consumption. Avoid vehicles with a history of neglect or those showing signs of engine trouble. Consider the higher trims for added features, but prioritize mechanical condition above all else. Given the age, buying used is the only option, so prioritize due diligence before committing.

Routine maintenance, ie oil changes, 2 sets of tires, 2 set of brakes, 1 set plugs No major issues. Love the styling but also own a gmc truck.Pulls my 2500 lb boat easily. Sad to see only 1 engine choice for 2025 Terrain. Due like 2025 styling interior and exterior.

I bought my Terrain used with 135,000 miles on it.

I bought my Terrain used with 135,000 miles on it. Four months later the transmission needed to be rebuilt ( $3.438 ). Three months after that the oil sending unit had to be replaced ( $387.00 ). At a 168,000 miles the timing 'jumped', had to be towed in for timing chain replacement ( $ 1,800.00 ). When the shop put it back together, there was compression issues in at least two of the cylinders. Tore it back apart, send heads to be machined, replaced bent valves, found out that the exhaust manifold was cracked and catalytic converter was melted ( $ 3,897.00 ). I got it back and put 162 miles on it in 2.5 weeks. Engine started running rough, wouldn't idle, etc. Had it towed back to shop - no leaks, no smoking, timing was fine, but I burned through 2.5 quarts in that 162 miles and this is the 'normal' amount of usage for the Terrain due to it's known issues. Can't get a straight answer anywhere as to recalls, but the laundry list of issues are all related to oil clogging even with perfect oil change history and a lousy transmission. If you're thinking of buying a Terrain, run, don't walk, in the opposite direction. Had I known the lengthy history of the Terrain issues, I never would have bought it. Now I'm so upside down on it, I can't get out from under it. Don't buy none, seriously, GMC is not standing behind this model AT ALL.

Pretty body style rides good many

Motors in the 2011 Terrains have had to be replaced way to soon under 100000 miles for many who own a 2011 terrain should have a recall on this problem
