The 2021 GMC Terrain is a compact SUV that's been around since 2010, offering a blend of practicality and GMC's signature premium styling. Key trims include the SL, SLE, SLT, and Denali. It's known for its comfortable ride, user-friendly infotainment system, and distinctive Denali trim with upscale features. The pricing typically ranges from the mid $20,000s to the low $30,000s, depending on the trim and options.
The Good

The 2021 GMC Terrain offers a comfortable and quiet ride, appealing to those seeking a relaxed driving experience. Its stylish design, particularly in the Denali trim, provides an upscale feel. Practically, it boasts decent fuel efficiency and a user-friendly infotainment system. Reliability is generally good, adding to its long-term value.

The Bad

The 2021 GMC Terrain's weaknesses include its somewhat lackluster acceleration from the standard engine. Cargo space is adequate but not class-leading. Some reviewers have noted the interior materials are not as premium as some competitors, especially in lower trims. Watch out for potential transmission issues, though not widespread.

What Problems Does the 2021 GMC Terrain Have?

The 2021 GMC Terrain, while generally reliable, has had some reported issues. Some owners have experienced issues with the 9-speed automatic transmission, including rough shifting or hesitation. There have also been reports of issues with the infotainment system, such as freezing or glitches. Some consumers have reported issues related to the fuel system. Specifically, there are reports of fuel pump failures. Earlier model years of the Terrain (2010-2017) had well-documented issues with excessive oil consumption, but this was largely addressed in later generations, including the 2021 model. Recalls have been issued for various reasons, including issues with the rearview camera display, improperly attached seat belts, and potential fuel leaks. It's crucial to check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for the latest recall information related to your specific VIN. Long-term reliability concerns generally revolve around the potential for electronic issues and the longevity of the turbocharged engine. Regular maintenance and addressing any minor issues promptly can help mitigate these concerns. Always check for service bulletins related to these common problems. While the 2021 model is more reliable than earlier versions, potential buyers should still be aware of these potential problems and factor them into their decision-making process. Regular oil changes are highly recommended.

How long will the 2021 GMC Terrain last?

With proper maintenance, a 2021 GMC Terrain can reasonably be expected to last for 150,000-200,000 miles or 10-13 years. Long-term durability hinges on consistent oil changes, transmission servicing, and addressing any cooling system issues promptly. Weaknesses can emerge over time, particularly with the turbocharger, which may require replacement eventually. Electronic components, like the infotainment screen, can also experience failures as the vehicle ages. Preventative maintenance is key to maximizing its lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2021 GMC Terrain comes standard with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Higher trims offer an 8-inch touchscreen and navigation. Entertainment options include a standard 6-speaker audio system, with a Bose premium sound system available on the Denali trim.

Driver-assistance features include standard features such as a rearview camera, Teen Driver technology, and available features like lane departure warning, lane keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, and automatic emergency braking. These features are often bundled into packages.

Safety features include standard airbags, stability control, and traction control. Optional safety features, depending on the trim, include automatic parking assist and a surround-view camera system.

Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) generally show good performance. Check these websites directly for the most up-to-date and specific crash-test ratings for the 2021 GMC Terrain. Generally, the Terrain performs well in most crash tests, earning good overall safety scores. The availability of advanced safety features on higher trims contributes to its safety profile.

2021 GMC Terrain Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2021 GMC Terrain ranged from around $26,000 for the base SL trim to over $36,000 for the Denali. As of late 2023/early 2024, used prices typically range from the high teens to the mid $20,000s, depending on condition, mileage, and trim. Depreciation is fairly average for the class. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, mileage, trim level (Denali holds its value best), and whether it has desirable options like all-wheel drive or advanced safety features. A clean vehicle history report is also essential.

2021 GMC Terrain Cost of Ownership

The 2021 GMC Terrain presents moderate ownership costs. Insurance rates are average for the segment. Fuel economy is decent, contributing to reasonable fuel costs. Routine maintenance, such as oil changes and tire rotations, is relatively affordable. However, potential repairs to the turbocharger or transmission could be costly. Overall, it's neither exceptionally economical nor overly expensive to own, falling into a comfortable middle ground. Long-term maintenance should be factored into the budget.

2021 GMC Terrain Insurance

Insurance for a 2021 GMC Terrain is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2021 GMC Terrain Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2021 GMC Terrain competes with the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5, and Ford Escape. The RAV4 and CR-V offer superior cargo space and a reputation for reliability. The Mazda CX-5 provides a more engaging driving experience. The Ford Escape offers a wider range of engine options, including hybrids.

In terms of performance, the Terrain's 1.5L turbo engine is adequate but not as strong as some competitors' offerings. Feature-wise, it holds its own, particularly in higher trims like the Denali. Reliability is generally good, but the RAV4 and CR-V are often cited as more dependable. Price-wise, the Terrain is competitive within the segment.

Alternatives to consider include:
  • Toyota RAV4: For superior reliability and cargo space.
  • Honda CR-V: Similar to the RAV4, with a focus on practicality.
  • Mazda CX-5: For a more sporty driving experience and upscale interior.
  • Ford Escape: For a wider variety of engine choices and trim options.

The Terrain shines with its comfortable ride and GMC's premium styling, but buyers prioritizing performance or ultimate reliability might find better options elsewhere.

Final Verdict: Is the 2021 GMC Terrain a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2021 GMC Terrain is a good choice for buyers seeking a comfortable and stylish compact SUV with a touch of premium appeal. It's ideal for individuals or small families who prioritize ride comfort and a user-friendly infotainment system over outright performance or maximum cargo space. A used 2021 Terrain, particularly in SLE or SLT trim, can represent good value. The Denali trim is worth considering for those who want a more luxurious experience. It's worth buying if you find a well-maintained example with a clean history, but carefully weigh its strengths against competitors offering superior reliability or performance, based on your individual needs and preferences.

One of the best looking suv's on the road. Highly

Extremely happy. Ride comfort, controls, comfort, looks, quietness, Quality. They should've kept the 2.0 turbo. But this engine not bad at all. Can't wait to get another.

Grea4 mileage and comfort

Bought it used. The shifter on the dash takes getting used to. But after a month I no longer grab for the shifter arm. Have been happy with comfort. Driving. Gas mileage. Would recommend it.

Stick to fresh tarmac

Rented it for two weeks in Hawaii. Drives and handles well as long as the tarmac is perfect. As soon as you hit ANY imperfections, bumps, cracks or potholes - or heaven forbid an unpaved road - it becomes an absolute disaster. Never seen anything as bad as this one. My stiffened Civic Si is more comfortable. An F.

Only had vehicle for a short time . Satisfied

I love the vehicle. Only problem is I don’t have a cargo net in the trunk which I have had in all other vehicles I have owned. Very highly needed and recommend for grocery shopping or holding small packages in place
