The Good
The 2016 GMC Terrain offers a comfortable ride and a relatively upscale interior, particularly in higher trims. It provides adequate performance with available V6 engine option. Its distinctive, bolder styling can appeal emotionally, while its practicality stems from a spacious cabin and cargo area, making it suitable for families. While not class-leading, fuel efficiency is reasonable, contributing to overall value.
The Bad
Several issues should be considered when evaluating a 2016 GMC Terrain. Oil consumption can be a problem, particularly with the four-cylinder engine. The infotainment system can feel dated. Some owners have reported issues with the timing chain and transmission. The base engine can feel underpowered for some drivers. Prior maintenance records are crucial.

Analysis
What Problems Does the 2016 GMC Terrain Have?
Recalls for the 2016 Terrain have addressed issues such as insufficient coating on the rearview camera harness, potentially leading to corrosion and camera malfunction. It's crucial to check the vehicle's VIN for outstanding recall work. Long-term reliability hinges on consistent maintenance and addressing issues like oil consumption early. While the V6 engine is generally more reliable, it's not immune to problems. Prospective buyers should thoroughly inspect the vehicle and review its service history before purchasing.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Driver-assistance features are somewhat limited compared to newer vehicles. A rearview camera is standard, while features like blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane departure warning are available on upper trims.
Safety features include standard antilock brakes, stability control, and a suite of airbags. Optional all-wheel drive provides enhanced traction in adverse weather conditions.
Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) generally show favorable results, although specific scores may vary. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) ratings should also be consulted for a comprehensive safety assessment, but note that ratings can change over time. Base models offer fewer advanced safety technologies than competitors, so research specific trim levels carefully.

How Does the 2016 GMC Terrain Compare to Other Wagon?
Price-wise, the Terrain is often comparable, but used models may offer better value than some competitors due to depreciation. For those prioritizing reliability and resale value, the Toyota RAV4 or Honda CR-V are better choices. If driving dynamics are a key concern, the Ford Escape or Mazda CX-5 are preferable. The Hyundai Tucson or Kia Sportage offer more modern features and longer warranties. While the Terrain has its merits, particularly its distinctive styling, other options may be more compelling depending on individual priorities.

Infotainment system failureInfotainment system will periodically stop working and start again. It also has stopped and did not start again until the next day. Took vehicle in for repair and after a 2 ½ wait the Service Advisor told me that the mechanic could not determine what the problem is. He also told me that he couldn’t justify replacing the Infotainment system because it would cost the dealership.

Extremely comfortable car to drive! This has been my dream car ever since I was growing up! When I started looking for cars I immediately started looking up GMC terrains since I already knew I wanted this, but since my city is small a lot of the cars pricing here are crazy high and unaffordable, so getting one was hard, but I was finally able to own my first GMC Terrain, and I am loving everything! Driving the car feels so much smooth, and extremely comfortable! I already know going on trips will be easy enough and the gas mileage is pretty decent as well!

Most Reliable car I've ownedThis car was well maintained and is currently clean. The car inside and outside are clean. The car has brown new tires purchased two months ago.

First time I own a GMC and love it already.Very comfortable. Love the features. Everybody in my family loves it also. It is sharp and most of all it is all wheel drive which we really need it during winter time here in WI. The only thing that I noticed, the front bumper is kind of low which might be a problem during winter season but we will see. Maybe it is not a big deal in a 4-5 in of snow. Other than that, I love it! Thank you
