The GMC Terrain is a compact SUV known for its upscale styling and comfortable ride. Introduced in 2010, the Terrain entered its second generation in 2018. The 2022 model year saw a mid-cycle refresh. Key trims include SLE, SLT, AT4, and Denali. The pricing range generally falls between $28,000 and $38,000, depending on trim and options. Its distinctive exterior design, particularly the Denali's premium appointments, and user-friendly technology contribute to its popularity.
The Good

The 2022 GMC Terrain offers a comfortable and quiet ride, appealing to practical buyers seeking a refined daily driver. Its handsome design and available Denali trim provide an emotional connection, suggesting sophistication. While not a performance leader, it provides adequate power and decent fuel efficiency, making it a reasonably sensible choice.

The Bad

The 2022 GMC Terrain's engine can feel underpowered, especially when fully loaded. The infotainment system, while generally user-friendly, can occasionally be slow to respond. Some owners have reported minor issues with the transmission and electrical components. Be sure to inspect the vehicle thoroughly and check for any software updates during pre-purchase inspections.

2022 GMC Terrain: Quick Overview

  • Engine Options: 1.5L Turbocharged 4-cylinder
  • Horsepower: 170 hp
  • Fuel Economy: 25 MPG City / 30 MPG Highway (FWD), 24 MPG City / 28 MPG Highway (AWD)
  • 0-60 Times: Around 9 seconds
  • Towing Capacity: 1,500 lbs (when properly equipped)
  • Trim-Level Features:
    • SLE: Standard features include LED headlights, keyless open and start, a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, and a suite of driver-assistance features like automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, and forward collision alert.
    • SLT: Adds leather upholstery, heated front seats, an 8-inch touchscreen, a power liftgate, and remote start.
    • AT4: Designed for a more rugged appearance and slightly improved off-road capability, featuring a unique grille, black chrome accents, and all-terrain tires.
    • Denali: The premium trim level includes unique exterior styling, premium leather seats, a heated steering wheel, a Bose premium audio system, and a head-up display. It also often includes enhanced safety features and convenience technologies.
  • Key Specs Detail: The 1.5L turbo engine, while fuel-efficient, is often criticized for lacking power when passing or carrying heavier loads. The Terrain's fuel economy is competitive within its class. The towing capacity is relatively low compared to some rivals. The AT4 trim provides a more adventurous aesthetic, but its off-road enhancements are relatively mild. The Denali trim emphasizes luxury and comfort, making it a more appealing choice for those prioritizing a premium experience. The infotainment system is generally intuitive and easy to use, but some users have reported occasional lag. Standard safety features across all trims contribute to the Terrain's appeal as a safe family vehicle.

What Problems Does the 2022 GMC Terrain Have?

The 2022 GMC Terrain has some reported issues to be aware of. One common complaint revolves around the 1.5L turbocharged engine feeling underpowered, particularly when the vehicle is fully loaded or climbing hills. Some owners have also reported issues with the 9-speed automatic transmission, including rough shifting or hesitation. While not widespread, there have been reports of electrical system glitches, such as infotainment system freezes or sensor malfunctions.

Recalls for the 2022 Terrain have been relatively limited, but it's essential to check the NHTSA website for the most up-to-date information on any safety-related recalls.

Long-term reliability concerns for the GMC Terrain, based on previous model years and early reports for the 2022, often center around the engine's long-term durability, especially given its reliance on turbocharging. Proper maintenance, including regular oil changes and adherence to the manufacturer's recommended service schedule, is crucial to mitigating potential issues. Some owners have also expressed concerns about the longevity of certain electronic components, such as the infotainment screen and sensors. It is always advisable to obtain a thorough pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic to identify any potential problems before buying a used 2022 GMC Terrain.

How long will the 2022 GMC Terrain last?

With diligent maintenance, a 2022 GMC Terrain can reasonably be expected to provide 150,000-200,000 miles or 10-13 years of service. Proper oil changes (every 5,000-7,500 miles), timely transmission fluid replacements, and adherence to the recommended maintenance schedule are critical. Long-term durability concerns often focus on the turbocharger system and potential for increased oil consumption as the engine ages. Electrical components, as mentioned previously, may also exhibit issues over time. Regular inspections are crucial to address potential problems early and extend the vehicle's lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2022 GMC Terrain boasts a respectable array of tech, entertainment, driver-assistance, and safety features. The standard infotainment system includes a 7-inch touchscreen (8-inch on higher trims) with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Available upgrades include built-in navigation, a Bose premium audio system, and a Wi-Fi hotspot.

Standard driver-assistance features include automatic emergency braking, forward collision alert, lane keep assist with lane departure warning, and a following distance indicator. Optional features include adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear park assist.

Safety is a priority, and the Terrain typically performs well in crash tests. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) ratings should be consulted for the latest information on crash-test performance. Expect generally good to excellent ratings, contributing to the Terrain's appeal as a family-friendly vehicle.

Key tech highlights include the user-friendly interface of the infotainment system, the convenience of wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (on some trims), and the availability of advanced safety technologies that enhance driver awareness and help prevent accidents. 2022 GMC Terrain Prices and Market Value

The 2022 GMC Terrain had a starting MSRP of around $28,000, with higher trims like the Denali reaching close to $40,000 when new. Current used market prices vary based on mileage, condition, and trim level, typically ranging from $22,000 to $35,000. Depreciation is moderate, but factors like higher mileage, accidents, and lack of maintenance records will negatively impact resale value. The Denali trim generally holds its value better due to its premium features and perceived desirability. Market conditions also play a significant role in determining used car prices.

2022 GMC Terrain Cost of Ownership

The 2022 GMC Terrain is moderately economical to own. Insurance costs are typically average for its class. Fuel economy is decent, especially on FWD models. Routine maintenance, such as oil changes and tire rotations, is relatively affordable. However, potential repairs related to the turbocharger or electrical system could increase long-term ownership costs. Overall, it strikes a reasonable balance between upfront cost and ongoing expenses, making it a fairly practical choice for budget-conscious buyers.

How Does the 2022 GMC Terrain Compare to Other Vehicle?

The 2022 GMC Terrain competes against the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-5, and Ford Escape. In terms of performance, the Terrain's 1.5L turbo engine is less powerful than many rivals' offerings, putting it at a disadvantage. Feature-wise, it offers a comparable suite of technology and safety equipment, especially in higher trims. Reliability is a mixed bag, with some owners reporting issues, while the RAV4 and CR-V are generally considered more reliable.

Price-wise, the Terrain is generally competitive, but incentives and deals can vary. The Mazda CX-5 offers a more engaging driving experience and a more upscale interior for a similar price. The Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 provide superior reliability and resale value, making them strong contenders.

Alternatives to consider: If reliability is a top priority, the Toyota RAV4 or Honda CR-V are excellent choices. If driving experience is important, the Mazda CX-5 stands out. If you desire a more rugged appearance, the Jeep Compass Trailhawk is a viable alternative. The Ford Escape also offers a variety of powertrain options, including a hybrid, and a more modern driving experience.

Final Verdict: Is the 2022 GMC Terrain a Good Vehicle?

The 2022 GMC Terrain is ideal for buyers seeking a stylish and comfortable compact SUV with a good array of features. It's worth buying if you prioritize aesthetics and a comfortable ride over outright performance. A used model, particularly a well-maintained SLT or Denali trim, can offer good value. However, carefully consider alternatives like the Toyota RAV4 or Honda CR-V if reliability is paramount. A thorough pre-purchase inspection is highly recommended to identify any potential issues before committing to a purchase. Assess your needs and compare the Terrain's strengths and weaknesses against its rivals to determine if it's the right fit.

Stay away!

I bought this car brand new. Drive it for exactly 1 mint, only had 1,068 miles on it and the transmission went out. It has now been at the dealership for 12 days awaiting repair, which I have been told could take another week. Very disappointed in my purchase.

Traveling the Terrain

I purchased my new Terrain last week. I love it’s roominess and style for a small class SUV. GMC really brought the smoke with this one. I’m 6’6” and my teenager is 6’2” and we enjoy the spacious legroom. The safety package and standard options on the Terrain make this a hard to beat value.
