2020 GMC Terrain Review: Reliable Small SUV With Some More Expensive Ownership Costs

Rating: 4.62
Based on 83 Owner Reviews β–Ά
Cathleen V | March 31, 2025
The 2020 GMC Terrain is a compact SUV that offers a blend of style and practicality. As part of GMC's lineup, it aims to provide a more upscale experience than its Chevrolet Equinox sibling. The Terrain's model years span from 2018-present for this generation. Key trims include SL, SLE, SLT, and Denali. Pricing in 2020 ranged approximately from $26,000 to $40,000. Its refined interior and distinctive exterior styling, particularly the Denali trim, made it a popular choice.
The Good

The 2020 GMC Terrain offers a comfortable ride and user-friendly technology, appealing to practical buyers. Its distinctive and stylish design, especially in the Denali trim, attracts those seeking a more premium and emotionally satisfying experience. Fuel efficiency is decent, and the compact size makes it easy to maneuver in urban environments. Some find the value proposition appealing considering its features and price point.

The Bad

The 2020 GMC Terrain's weaknesses include a less powerful base engine that can feel underpowered, especially when fully loaded. Some owners have reported issues with the 9-speed automatic transmission. The rear seat legroom is adequate but not class-leading. The Denali trim, while luxurious, carries a significant price premium. Be aware of potential issues with the infotainment system.

What Problems Does the 2020 GMC Terrain Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2020 GMC Terrain include issues with the 9-speed automatic transmission, such as harsh shifting or hesitation. Some owners have also reported problems with the infotainment system, including freezing or connectivity issues with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Engine issues, though less common, have also surfaced, particularly related to the turbocharger in both the 1.5L and 2.0L engines.

Recalls for the 2020 Terrain have primarily focused on safety concerns. Check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for the latest recall information, as recalls can vary based on production date and specific VIN. Some recalls have involved issues with the fuel system or airbag deployment.

Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the complexity of the turbocharged engines and advanced technology. Consistent maintenance, including regular oil changes and timely servicing of the transmission, is crucial to mitigate potential problems. Some owners have expressed concern about the long-term durability of the electronic components and sensors. Overall, while the Terrain has generally average reliability ratings, proactively addressing any issues that arise and following the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule can help ensure its longevity.

How long will the 2020 GMC Terrain last?

With diligent maintenance, a 2020 GMC Terrain can reasonably be expected to provide 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-13 years of service. Long-term durability hinges on consistent oil changes, transmission servicing, and addressing any minor issues promptly. Weaknesses may emerge in the form of increased oil consumption in the turbocharged engines, potential turbocharger failure over time, and wear and tear on suspension components. Proper care and preventative maintenance are crucial to maximizing the vehicle's lifespan.

Engine blew on it twice took 8 weeks to fix with new engine being installed. GM has not reimbursed me for any towing, lodging or transportation. 2018 Terrain 26,700 miles and maintained regularly. Lemon of a car and terrible corporation to be associated with.

2020 GMC Terrain Insurance

Insurance for a 2020 GMC Terrain is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Minivan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2020 GMC Terrain Compare to Other Minivan?

The 2020 GMC Terrain competes with the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5, and Ford Escape.

Performance: The Terrain's base engine lags behind the RAV4 and CX-5 in terms of responsiveness. The optional 2.0L engine provides adequate power but isn't class-leading. The CR-V and Escape offer comparable performance.

Features: The Terrain offers a good range of features, especially in higher trims, but the RAV4 and CR-V often provide more standard features for the price.

Reliability: The Terrain's reliability is generally considered average, while the RAV4 and CR-V have consistently higher reliability ratings.

Price: The Terrain's price is competitive within the segment, but its lower resale value can impact long-term cost.

Alternatives: The Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V are generally considered better alternatives due to their superior reliability and resale value. The Mazda CX-5 offers a more engaging driving experience. The Ford Escape provides a wider range of engine options, including a hybrid. If reliability is a top priority, the RAV4 or CR-V are recommended. If you prefer a more luxurious experience and prioritize styling, the Terrain Denali might be appealing, but be aware of the potential for higher maintenance costs.

Final Verdict: Is the 2020 GMC Terrain a Good Minivan?

The 2020 GMC Terrain is ideal for buyers who prioritize stylish design and a comfortable ride over outright performance or class-leading reliability. It's worth buying as a used vehicle if found at a good price and with a thorough inspection. The SLT trim offers a good balance of features and value. The Denali trim is appealing for its luxury appointments, but be prepared for a higher price and potentially higher maintenance costs. Carefully consider your priorities and compare it to more reliable alternatives like the RAV4 and CR-V before making a decision. Avoid the base SL trim due to its limited features.

Bought it 2 months ago and it’s been in the shop for 1

Bought it 2 months ago and it’s been in the shop for 1 month of that. First was evap emissions issue, now the fuel pump is bad. The vehicle has 28k miles it should have no issues. It’s also extremely underpowered. It handles very nicely and is a nice looking, comfortable vehicle. But I would not recommend buying it. We are in the process of selling it back to the dealership for a loss.

Great Reliability

Great vehicle, 65,000 miles and not a single issue, hoping to get atleast another 100k miles out of it. Extremely reliable. A family member of mine bought a Honda that broke down at 16,000 miles and got stranded. Would absolutely recommend a 2018+ terrain

Run away

Fell in love with this car as soon as we saw it. Unfortunately it has been the worst vehicle I have ever owned. Frequent breakdowns resulted in weeks long waits for parts. At 61k miles the car started falling apart. Dash lights quit. Brake pedal broke. Cruise doesn't work. The car is two years old and had cost almost $7000 in repairs this year.

I LOVE the power

I really enjoy the Terrain. Traded in our beloved Mercedes R350. It was dream to driving on the highway. Our list for new vehicle was easy to get in and out without climbing up or down. No leather seats, hate leather seats, panoramic roof, engine power, get up and go, some luxurious in the vehicle, an easy info console. Before we took a test drive, we did our following tests. How easy to get in and out of the vehicles, leg space (our son is 6'4"). Only wanted two row seating, comfort seating. We checked all other makes. Spend awhile day going from different Dealerships of different makes and models. Didn't want to speak to car salesman, just let us do our preliminary test, on different makes and models. Then we look at the warranties. Finally took take a test drive. Was blown away at the get up and go of the Terrain, pleasantly surprised at the safety features and options it comes with. After almost a month, trips outside the city to the mountains and back. We are really happy with the purchase of the Terrain. Seven years warranty bumper to bumper, ten years on the powertrain. The true fuel economy really surprised me, it doesn't bother me that I have use 91 fuel because of the 2 liter engine. Had to use it on the Mercedes so no change there.
