The 2014 Hyundai Veloster is a compact, sporty hatchback known for its unique three-door design (one on the driver's side, two on the passenger side). Introduced in 2012, the first generation Veloster ran through 2017. Key trims included the base model and the Turbo. Its quirky styling and affordable price point, typically ranging from $17,000 to $23,000 when new, made it popular with buyers seeking something different.
The Good

The 2014 Veloster offers a striking design that appeals emotionally, standing out from the crowd. Practically, it's relatively fuel-efficient. The Turbo model provides a performance boost. It also provides good value for the price, offering a lot of features for the money, but comfort might be lacking for some passengers.

The Bad

Weaknesses of the 2014 Veloster include limited rear passenger space due to its sloping roofline and unconventional door configuration. Some owners report issues with the dual-clutch transmission in the Turbo model, experiencing jerky shifting. The base engine can feel underpowered. Also, watch for potential issues with the paint fading or chipping.

What Problems Does the 2014 Hyundai Veloster Have?

The 2014 Hyundai Veloster, particularly the Turbo model, has seen some reported issues. A common complaint revolves around the 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT) found in some Turbo models. Owners have reported jerky shifting, hesitation, and overall rough operation, particularly at low speeds. There have been software updates to address these concerns, but they don't always completely resolve the problem. Some owners have also reported issues with the engine, including premature wear or failure, although this is less common.
Recalls for the 2014 Veloster have included issues related to the parking brake potentially not holding, which could allow the vehicle to roll away. It's crucial to check the vehicle's VIN for any outstanding recalls.
Long-term reliability concerns often center around the DCT, as mentioned. Other potential issues include oil consumption in some engines. The paint quality has also been criticized by some owners, with reports of chipping and fading, especially in certain colors. Overall, while the Veloster can be a reliable car, the Turbo model requires careful inspection and maintenance, particularly concerning the DCT.

How long will the 2014 Hyundai Veloster last?

With regular maintenance, a 2014 Hyundai Veloster can reasonably achieve 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-15 years of service. However, long-term durability is significantly affected by maintenance habits. Owners who diligently follow the recommended service schedule, including regular oil changes and transmission fluid services (especially for the DCT), will likely experience fewer issues. Weaknesses that may emerge over time include potential DCT issues (if applicable), increased oil consumption, wear of suspension components, and potential for rust in colder climates. Proper care is essential for maximizing the lifespan of this vehicle.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2014 Hyundai Veloster came standard with a 7-inch touchscreen display for its infotainment system, offering features like Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free calling and audio streaming, a rearview camera, and USB/auxiliary input jacks. Higher trims, especially the Turbo, added features such as a premium Dimension audio system. Navigation was available as an option on some models.
Driver-assistance features were relatively limited for this model year. Blind-spot monitoring wasn't available, and the focus was primarily on basic safety features like anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control, and traction control. Standard safety equipment included front, side, and curtain airbags.
Optional features varied depending on the trim. These could include leather upholstery, heated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, and keyless entry with push-button start.
Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) generally awarded the 2014 Veloster 4 out of 5 stars for overall safety. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) gave the Veloster generally good ratings in its crash tests, but results can vary by specific test. It's important to check both NHTSA and IIHS ratings for the most comprehensive safety information.

2014 Hyundai Veloster Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2014 Hyundai Veloster ranged from approximately $17,000 for the base model to around $23,000 for the Turbo. Current used market prices typically range from $7,000 to $13,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim. The Veloster has depreciated considerably. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, mileage, accident history, and whether it's a base model or a more desirable Turbo. The DCT issues in some Turbo models can negatively impact resale value.

2014 Hyundai Veloster Cost of Ownership

The 2014 Hyundai Veloster is generally economical to own. Insurance costs are typically moderate. Fuel economy is good, especially with the naturally aspirated engine. Routine maintenance is relatively affordable. However, potential repairs, particularly for the DCT in the Turbo model, can be costly. Long-term ownership costs can be higher for the Turbo due to potential transmission issues. Budgeting for potential repairs is wise, especially with higher-mileage examples.

Insurance for a 2014 Hyundai Veloster is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Coupe with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2014 Hyundai Veloster Compare to Other Coupe?

The 2014 Hyundai Veloster competes with cars like the Honda Civic Si (hatchback), Mazda3, and Volkswagen GTI. In terms of performance, the GTI offers a more refined and powerful driving experience, while the Civic Si is a strong contender with its sporty handling. The Veloster Turbo provides a decent amount of power but might not feel as polished as these rivals. Features are comparable, with the Veloster offering a good array of standard equipment.
Reliability is where the Veloster can fall slightly behind, particularly concerning the DCT in the Turbo. The Mazda3 and Honda Civic are generally considered more reliable. In terms of price, the Veloster offered a competitive edge when new, and this advantage continues on the used market. It provides a unique design at a lower price point compared to some rivals.
Alternatives to consider would be the Mazda3 for its blend of driving dynamics and reliability, or the VW GTI for its performance and refinement. The Honda Civic Si is another good choice if you prioritize sporty handling. If you want a reliable and efficient hatchback, the Toyota Corolla iM (Scion iM) is worth considering. The Veloster's unique selling point remains its distinctive three-door design and affordable price.

Final Verdict: Is the 2014 Hyundai Veloster a Good Coupe?

The 2014 Hyundai Veloster is ideal for buyers seeking a stylish and unique compact car at an affordable price. It's worth buying used if you prioritize design and value over ultimate performance or reliability. Consider the naturally aspirated base model if you are concerned about DCT issues. A pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is crucial, especially for the Turbo model, to assess the condition of the DCT and engine. For someone on a budget who wants something different, the Veloster can be a good option, but be aware of its potential weaknesses and factor in potential repair costs.

I have owned this car for 2.

I have owned this car for 2.5 years and at first really enjoyed it however a month in the backup camera stopped working (need a new head unit) but the real issue was the engine giving out at 84000km (54000 miles). After doing a tear down of the engine the cause was the piston rings had broken and the actual piston in cylinder 2 broke. For such low KM I was mind blown, buy at your own risk and that goes for and Hyundai vehicle

Great Compact Car

I own a 2014 Hyundai Veloster R-Spec. This car worked great for me in college, I maintained the car regularly and never had any engine issues. The car carried everything I needed for groceries and provided a great amount of space in the hatchback for such a small car. The car is fun and has great acceleration. I own the manual version of this car and I have never had any issues with the gears slipping or thumping. The best part of this car is the unique 3 door design that started a lot of cool conversations in college with my friends. It's the best of both worlds allowing people to get in the back without folding the seat down and not compromising in weight or style of this zippy little sports coupe.

Great, until 114,000 miles

I have 114,000 miles and Kept meticulous care of her. the oil pressure light came on, and now I see all the history of the issues with this motor. I am working with Hyundai now trying to have them replace the motor which will be necessary. If they don't replace or honor their brand, it will be very disappointing. I guess I should've looked further into the history of this car. I sure hope they honor their brand

Worst car ever.

For over three years I have had intermittent starting problems with my 2014 Veloster. I have had it back to the dealership numerous times and been charge a diagnostic fee for finding nothing. I replaced the battery (at my cost) which didn't solve the problem. When it took it back they have replaced the alternator, fuse box computer, & corroded wires, had the vehicle for at least a week at a time and are telling me it's my fault because 1. I don't shut it off properly. 2. I "play" with the fuse switch. 3. I don't drive it enough. Now they are telling me there are NO cranking amps in the battery and it needs to be replaced at my cost AGAIN. They have completely ignored me when I tell them that the CD player has stayed on all night. The dash display stays on all night or won't come on at start up. The radio re-sets the stations, the clock re-sets to 12:00 every time it is shut off, sometimes the dash display works sometimes not and it will often start after trying to crank it three or four times but only if the dash display energizes. It also on occasion decides to lock me out completely and not recognize the key fob. I can drive it for a half an hour, do my shopping and come out to find it dead. I can put the battery on a trickle charge for 48 hours and it reads charged, but the car won't start the first time. After two or three tries it might start. Otherwise a quick boost and it starts immediately, no waiting for it to charge up. The dealership couldn't care less even though it did the same thing to the service technician the second last time it took it there. The car was warm and driven for 40 min. but it wouldn't start for him first time. Took three or four tries, yet now I get this it needs a new battery jive. I'm feed up with the attitude that I'm some stupid woman who doesn't know the difference between a dead battery and a dead short to ground that is causing all these electrical problems. I will take the battery back to where I bought it and have it tested.

Fun and sporty

This car was a lot of fun to drive. It handles really well and I loved the sound of the turbo kicking in. It had all the advanced features available at its release. My only complaint of the car was how rough it rode. It sports the low profile tires and I managed to blow out 3 tires during the length of ownership (3 yrs). You felt every nook and cranny on the rode, so if your city doesn't maintain the roads, like mine, I wouldn't recommend getting it. The 3rd door is also near useless. The backseat is tiny, but the front is very spacious, for a smaller hatchback. Make sure the backup camera works or you're going to have a hard time seeing when you are in reverse.

Fast and frugal

Bought car used, it had held up well. Seats and interior showed minimal wear. The technology on the car is intuitive and still relevant four years later. Performance is above par for price and size. Really enjoying it so far.
