The 2016 Hyundai Veloster is a unique compact car known for its distinctive three-door design (one on the driver's side and two on the passenger's side). Produced from 2012-2017 (first generation), key trims included the base Veloster, Veloster Turbo, and Veloster Turbo R-Spec. New, it had a price range of approximately $18,000 to $28,000. Its quirky styling and sporty handling contribute to its popularity, offering a blend of practicality and individuality.
The Good

The 2016 Hyundai Veloster offers a striking and unique design that turns heads (emotional). It's relatively fuel-efficient, providing good gas mileage for daily commutes (practical). The turbo models offer peppy performance, while all trims provide a comfortable ride. It represents a good value proposition, offering a lot of features for its price.

The Bad

The 2016 Hyundai Veloster's non-turbo engine can feel underpowered, especially when accelerating or climbing hills. The rear visibility is somewhat limited due to the car's design. Some owners have reported issues with the dual-clutch transmission in the turbo models. The asymmetrical door design can be polarizing.

What Problems Does the 2016 Hyundai Veloster Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2016 Hyundai Veloster include issues with the dual-clutch transmission (DCT) in the turbo models. Some owners have reported jerky shifting, hesitation, and occasional failure, particularly at lower speeds. Engine knocking has also been reported, although less frequently. Premature wear of the clutch in manual transmission models also appears to be common. Some owners have reported issues with the paint peeling or fading, especially on red or orange vehicles.

Recalls for the 2016 Hyundai Veloster have addressed issues like potential brake light switch malfunctions, which could prevent the brake lights from illuminating. There might have been recalls relating to engine stalling or fire risks, so checking the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for the most up-to-date recall information is essential.

Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the DCT's longevity and the potential for carbon buildup in the direct-injected engine, which can lead to decreased performance and fuel economy over time. Regular maintenance, including oil changes and spark plug replacements, is critical to mitigate these issues. Checking for service bulletins related to the DCT and following recommended maintenance schedules can help prolong the transmission's life.

How long will the 2016 Hyundai Veloster last?

With good maintenance, a 2016 Hyundai Veloster can reasonably provide 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-15 years of service. However, the longevity heavily depends on consistent maintenance, especially regarding oil changes and transmission servicing. The turbocharged models may require more frequent attention due to the increased stress on the engine and DCT. Potential long-term weaknesses include carbon buildup in the engine, DCT issues, and potential suspension component wear. Regular inspections and timely repairs are essential for maximizing the car's lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2016 Hyundai Veloster includes a standard touchscreen infotainment system, typically a 7-inch display, with features like Bluetooth connectivity, a rearview camera, and smartphone integration (Apple CarPlay/Android Auto might be available depending on the trim and package). Higher trims often add features such as a premium audio system (e.g., Dimension or Infinity), navigation, and a larger touchscreen display.

Driver-assistance features are relatively limited compared to newer cars, but some models might include blind-spot monitoring or rear cross-traffic alert as optional equipment. Standard safety features include antilock brakes (ABS), electronic stability control (ESC), traction control, and multiple airbags (front, side, and curtain).

Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA are important to consider. Check their websites for specific ratings for the 2016 Veloster. These ratings typically assess performance in frontal, side, and rollover crash tests. Features that influence the safety rating include the car's structure, airbag deployment, and the availability of electronic stability control.

2016 Hyundai Veloster Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2016 Hyundai Veloster ranged from approximately $18,000 to $28,000, depending on the trim and options. As of late 2024, used market prices typically range from $8,000 to $16,000, contingent on mileage, condition, and trim level. Depreciation is significant, as expected for most vehicles. Factors affecting resale value include the car's overall condition, maintenance history, mileage, and trim level (Turbo models generally hold their value better). A clean title and complete service records also enhance resale value.

2016 Hyundai Veloster Cost of Ownership

The 2016 Hyundai Veloster is generally economical to own. Insurance costs are typically moderate. Fuel costs are reasonable, especially with the naturally aspirated engine. Maintenance costs are average for a compact car, but potential DCT repairs (if applicable) can be expensive. Regular servicing is key to mitigating long-term repair expenses. Overall, it provides a relatively affordable ownership experience, but be prepared for potential DCT issues on Turbo models.

2016 Hyundai Veloster Insurance

Insurance for a 2016 Hyundai Veloster is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Hatchback with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2016 Hyundai Veloster Compare to Other Hatchback?

Key rivals of the 2016 Hyundai Veloster include the Honda Civic, Mazda3, and Volkswagen GTI. Compared to the Civic and Mazda3, the Veloster stands out with its unique styling but may lag slightly in terms of overall reliability and resale value. The GTI offers superior performance but comes at a higher price point.

In terms of features, the Veloster is competitive, offering a good balance of technology and comfort for its price. The Civic and Mazda3 generally have better safety ratings and more advanced driver-assistance features available.

If performance is a priority, the GTI is a better choice. For all-around reliability and practicality, the Civic or Mazda3 might be preferable. Similar alternatives include the Scion tC (though production has ceased) and the Kia Forte Koup. The Veloster is best for those who prioritize unique styling and don't mind potential DCT issues in the Turbo models.

Quite possible one of the best driving cars i've ridden

Quite possible one of the best driving cars i've ridden in. Sleek design, decent ft/lbs of torque, especially in the turbo model. The shifts are incredibly smooth, and have had 0 issues with anything since owning the car. Bought it used, with 70k miles on it, and it still runs incredibly smoothly

Awesome car for a new driver

This was the first car I ever got when I got my license, and I absolutely loved it for the two years I had it. My only complaints are that the car is very low to the ground so you have to be careful on hills and whatnot and that it doesn't have very good pickup. Otherwise, it's an adorable little car. It was super comfortable to drive in on the interstate to and from college (3 hour drive). It had great gas mileage, and being able to use the 87 gas definitely saved me money. The speaker system was awesome, too! And the car turned really sharp, which was also really nice.

AC disaster!!

There is a problem with the interior where the AC knob plugs into the internal wiring of the car. Multiple people have had problems with this part frying and there is no recall or any protection. This piece conveniently fries out after your warranty is void. The dealership wants to charge us 5k to fix it when it's a 32$ part. Just beware that this AC problem is huge and costly so do your research and you will see that many have a fried plugin inside the interior and the knob of your AC will go out. And when you take it apart the plug attached to the wiring is burnt. Hyundai won't just fix it unless you have a warranty. And this usually doesn't happen until after 60k miles! It's so frustrating.

Good car, for a good MSRP

Bought it with about 36k miles and I'm around 46k now with very little problems, good gas mileage, and good power for the price range. Had only minor issues like the seal on the front passenger window starting to have a small leak and a leak in the windshield wiper reservoir. But, there's also a 50/50 chance that could've been from the previous owner.

Really fun to drive!

I went with the 6 speed manual to keep the price within my range and I am very happy with it. Car runs great, shifts smoothly, comfortable (plenty of leg and head room) and is really fun to drive! I am very happy with my purchase.

I like this car!

This car is so awesome to drive and fun. It drives really well and handles so much better than my 2010 Honda Civic that I had before this Veloster Turbo.

Extremely fun to drive

I really look forward to my commute to work in the Velocitor. It handles extremely well, and has more power than I expected. It surpasses my expectations of a small car as far as handling and performance while simultaneously getting gas mileage.

Favorite car I've owned and I'm 70 years old.

Fun to drive car that's eye catching and gas saving. 3 door with hatchback has plenty of room for groceries and trips to the big warehouse stores. A car you want to show your personality.

The warrantee is the best- bumper to bumper.

The Turbo model is worth the extra money. Very reliable and trouble free. The dealership honors the original warrantee even though I am the second owner.
