Rating: 4.86
Based on 60 Owner Reviews β–Ά
Eugene S | March 31, 2025
The 2021 Jeep Gladiator, a mid-size pickup truck, blends Jeep's off-road prowess with truck utility. Introduced in 2020, its body style is a four-door crew cab with a truck bed. Key trims include Sport, Overland, Rubicon, and Mojave. The original MSRP ranged from around $35,000 to over $50,000 depending on the trim and options. It stands out due to its removable top and doors, offering a unique open-air driving experience combined with truck functionality. It is popular for its off-road capabilities and distinctive design.
The Good

The 2021 Gladiator boasts impressive off-road performance and distinctive Jeep styling that evokes strong emotions. For practical buyers, it offers solid towing capacity and a usable truck bed. While not the most efficient, it provides acceptable fuel economy for its class. Ride comfort is reasonable, and it holds its value well on the used market. Reliability can be a mixed bag, but the Gladiator's strengths often outweigh its weaknesses for many buyers.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2021 Gladiator include its ride quality, which can be stiff compared to other trucks. Fuel economy isn't a strong point. Some owners have reported electronic issues and build quality concerns. Wind noise with the soft top can be significant. Watch out for potential issues with the infotainment system and drivetrain components.

What Problems Does the 2021 Jeep Gladiator Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2021 Jeep Gladiator can include electrical issues such as problems with the infotainment system (Uconnect) freezing or malfunctioning. Some owners have reported issues with the death wobble, a violent shaking of the front end at certain speeds, though this is less commonly reported than with earlier Gladiator model years. There have been recalls for various issues, including potential problems with the driveshaft, rear axle, and brake lines. Long-term reliability concerns sometimes revolve around the electronic components and the complexity of the vehicle, which can lead to higher repair costs over time. The diesel engine, while offering good torque, can also present unique maintenance requirements and potential for issues related to its emissions control systems. Earlier Gladiators (2020 models) had more widely reported issues related to the death wobble. While improvements were made, it's still advisable to inspect the vehicle thoroughly, especially the suspension and steering components, before purchasing a used 2021 model.

How long will the 2021 Jeep Gladiator last?

With proper maintenance, a 2021 Jeep Gladiator can reasonably be expected to provide 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-15 years of service. However, longevity heavily depends on owner maintenance habits. Neglecting regular oil changes, fluid checks, and other scheduled services will shorten its lifespan. Long-term durability can be affected by rust, especially in areas with harsh winters and road salt. Weaknesses over time may include wear and tear on suspension components, the electrical system, and potential issues with the diesel engine's emissions system (if equipped). Proper care and preventative maintenance are key to maximizing the Gladiator's lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2021 Jeep Gladiator offers a range of built-in tech and safety features. The Uconnect infotainment system is available with screen sizes ranging from 5 inches to 8.4 inches. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are available. Entertainment features include available premium audio systems from Alpine. Driver-assistance features include optional blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-path detection, adaptive cruise control, and forward collision warning. A rearview camera is standard.
Safety features include electronic stability control, traction control, and multiple airbags. Optional features included a forward-facing off-road camera.
Crash test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) vary. The Gladiator received a 4-star overall safety rating. IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) ratings are mixed, with good scores in some categories but marginal scores in others, like the small overlap front crash test. It's important to review the specific model year's ratings for the most accurate information. Higher trims offered more advanced safety features as standard or optional equipment.

2021 Jeep Gladiator Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2021 Jeep Gladiator's MSRP ranged from approximately $35,000 to over $50,000 depending on trim and options. Current used market prices vary widely based on condition, mileage, and trim, generally ranging from the low $30,000s to the upper $40,000s. The Gladiator holds its value relatively well due to its popularity and unique characteristics. Factors affecting resale value include: low mileage, clean title, well-maintained condition, desirable options (like the diesel engine or Rubicon package), and overall market demand for Jeep vehicles. Depreciation is slower than many other trucks in its class.

2021 Jeep Gladiator Cost of Ownership

The 2021 Jeep Gladiator is generally considered moderately costly to own. Insurance costs can be higher than average due to its body style and potential for off-road use. Fuel economy isn't exceptional, leading to higher fuel costs. Maintenance, while not overly expensive for routine services, can increase if off-roading leads to wear and tear. Repairs, especially for specialized components like the 4x4 system, can be pricier. Long-term ownership costs depend heavily on driving habits and maintenance diligence. It is not particularly economical compared to other trucks.

reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2021 Jeep Gladiator Compare to Other Pickup Truck?

The 2021 Jeep Gladiator competes with mid-size trucks like the Toyota Tacoma, Chevrolet Colorado, and Ford Ranger. Performance-wise, the Gladiator offers solid off-road capabilities that often exceed its rivals, especially in Rubicon trim. The Tacoma is known for its reliability, potentially surpassing the Gladiator in this area. The Colorado offers a diesel engine option similar to the Gladiator. The Ranger provides a more refined on-road driving experience.
Feature-wise, the Gladiator stands out with its removable top and doors, a unique selling point. Price-wise, it can be more expensive than some competitors, particularly when similarly equipped.
Alternatives to consider: The Toyota Tacoma offers better long-term reliability, if off-road capability is not the primary concern. The Chevrolet Colorado is a worthy option if you need a diesel. The Ford Ranger offers a better on-road driving experience. If maximizing off-road capability is the top priority, the Gladiator remains a strong choice, but be prepared for potential compromises in ride comfort and fuel economy compared to its rivals.

Final Verdict: Is the 2021 Jeep Gladiator a Good Pickup Truck?

The 2021 Jeep Gladiator is ideal for buyers who prioritize off-road capability, unique styling with open-air driving, and the versatility of a truck bed. Whether it's worth buying depends on individual needs and priorities. It's a worthwhile purchase for Jeep enthusiasts and those who frequently venture off-road.
Consider buying used to save money, but thoroughly inspect the vehicle for any signs of off-road abuse or neglect. The Rubicon trim is recommended for serious off-roaders, while the Overland offers a good balance of features and comfort for daily driving. Weigh the pros and cons carefully, considering the Gladiator's strengths and weaknesses relative to its competitors.

Serious Suspension Problem

I would rate the Jeep with higher ratings but I have had very concerning suspension problems at freeway speeds: On rough or uneven pavement the Jeep shutters / shakes at a point where the Jeep is not easy to control: In fact on two occasions, the Jeep crossed lanes: Unable to make contact with MOPAR as there web site sucks: Finally did reach a rep by phone: I need to bring it in for diagnosis: A test drive most likely will duplicate this problem as it comes and goes: Unless Jeep can rectify the problem, I will turn it back in as it is not safe to drive!!

MOHAVE ride makes for good daily driver

Mojave trim gives a smooth ride. A big improvement over the 2012 Rubicon Unlimited that I had. 17-18 mpg around suburbs and 20-21 on trips. At 13,000 miles no reliability issues. 8-Speed transmission coupled with the 3.6 v6 works well. Great in SNOW. Recommend the AWD optional transfer case.

UNIQUE GLADIATOR

When I first saw it on the street, I knew it was different. A Jeep, I'm a former wrangler owner. I am completely taken by this one of a kind Gladiator experience. I didnt know if I could drive it with the added on back. NO PROBLEM. It handles better than my wrangler. In every way. The back cover, I have more room now for carrying items, beach gear to whatever. Love the Blue color. Vivid. Fun. I'm in jeep heaven. Cant believe the turning radius, ease of driving. All cars look the same nowadays and are boring to me. This brings out the adventure and uniqueness, I love the car!!

New toy at the moment

Overall the vehicle is great, I did a lot of modifications. Improvements for this vehicle is when it rains the part over the door needs to be longer so the rain doesn't go into the car and splash over the interior and hit a person on the head
