The Good
The 2000 Lexus GS 300 offers a compelling blend of advantages. Practically, it boasts legendary Lexus reliability and a comfortable ride. Emotionally, its stylish design and smooth inline-six engine provide a rewarding driving experience. While not the most fuel-efficient, its overall value proposition, considering its luxury features and durability, makes it an attractive choice. Its performance is adequate, offering a balance of power and refinement.
The Bad
Despite its strengths, the 2000 Lexus GS 300 has weaknesses. The infotainment system is dated. Potential buyers should watch out for oil leaks, especially from the valve cover gaskets. Suspension components, particularly bushings, can wear out over time. Rust can be a concern in colder climates. Also, the automatic transmission can experience issues with high mileage.

What Problems Does the 2000 Lexus GS 300 Have?
While recalls are relatively rare for this model year, it is essential to check the NHTSA website for any outstanding safety recalls based on the VIN. Long-term reliability concerns center primarily around age-related wear and tear of rubber and plastic components. Routine maintenance, including timely oil changes and fluid flushes, is critical to maximizing the lifespan of the engine and transmission. Rust can be an issue in regions with harsh winters and road salt, affecting the undercarriage and body panels.
How long will the 2000 Lexus GS 300 last?
What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
The optional navigation system is outdated by modern standards. There are no advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) like adaptive cruise control or lane departure warning. The audio system lacks modern connectivity options like Bluetooth or smartphone integration. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) gave the 2000 Lexus GS 300 a 4-star rating for driver and passenger in the frontal crash test and a 5-star rating for side crash protection. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) did not perform a full crash test on this model year. Overall, while the GS 300 offered decent tech and safety for its era, modern vehicles provide significantly more advanced features.

How Does the 2000 Lexus GS 300 Compare to Other Sedan?
Feature-wise, the GS 300 was competitive for its time. Performance was adequate but not class-leading. A similar alternative to the GS 300 is the Infiniti I30/I35, offering a blend of luxury and reliability at a slightly lower price point. Another option is the Acura RL, providing a comfortable and well-equipped experience. If performance is a priority, the BMW 5 Series is a better choice, but be prepared for higher maintenance costs. For outright luxury, the Mercedes E-Class is worth considering, but again, reliability is a concern. Overall, the GS 300 presents a solid balance of factors, making it a compelling option, particularly if reliability is paramount.

I fell in love the 1st time I drove it!I purchased my 2000 Lexus GS300 a year ago, with 251,000 miles. Let me tell you, I have had nothing but great times in this car every time I drive it. With such high mileage one would think it's a dog but it's not. It has the inline 6 cylinder 3.0 2jz! Powerful and best running motor. The only problems I have had to replace is the O2 SENSOR, and a sensor in the transmission. All I did on my own, also replaced the alternator. Now this car is fast stock, smooth ride and luxurious interior. This is definitely a reliable car would recommend everyone to buy a Lexus in the GS series. GREAT CAR!!

Best car I ever ownedI had this GS for 16 years. Very powerful, smooth well built. Nice soft leather. Beautiful interior. Put $250.00 in repairs. That's it, Top notch fit and finish. 21 mpg average, 26-27 mpg highway. Not many luxury cars if any can match that reliability.

Very reliable. Maintenance-free car to ownPerfect balance of luxury and power. Easy to drive and maintain. Spacious and smooth ride. This is my 3rd GS and I like the older body style 200-2006 much more than the newer design versions. All in all, you cannot go wrong with Lexus as a brand, and the GS is a good mix of size, power, and luxury compared to other models.

My third GS!I started with the GS 430 back in '02, and later had two gs 300s back to back. I did not miss the extra horsepower. The 300 has plenty of pick up and is powerful enough in highways. Most of all, it is downright the most reliable car I have ever owned. I also love the body style more that the revised styling in '06.

Incredible car with 117,000 miles!I have owned this car for 4 years now. Bought it in 2010 with 94,000 miles. CarFax certified 1-owner. Had good service records. I thought I had a major suspension problem until I changed the tires to Michelin! Improved the car's ride and performance substantially. This is a perfect mid sized car with excellent cabin space and considerable leg room. Engine is perfect and fast enough for me!
