Analysis
What Problems Does the 2004 Lexus GS 300 Have?
Long-term reliability concerns revolve around potential oil leaks from the valve cover gaskets and the power steering system. Suspension components, such as ball joints and control arm bushings, may require replacement as the vehicle ages. Rust can be a concern, particularly in regions with harsh winters and road salt. Check for rust around the wheel wells, undercarriage, and door seams.
Recalls for the 2004 GS 300 were relatively limited, but it's crucial to check the vehicle's VIN with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to ensure all applicable recalls have been addressed. The 2004 model year doesn't have any specific, glaringly different issues compared to other years within the second generation (1998-2005), but pre-purchase inspections are always recommended to assess the vehicle's current condition.
How long will the 2004 Lexus GS 300 last?
Long-term durability can be affected by factors such as climate and driving conditions. Vehicles in colder climates may experience more rust and corrosion. Weaknesses over time include potential suspension wear, electronic component failures (like the navigation system), and issues with the climate control system. However, overall, the GS 300 is known for its impressive longevity.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
In terms of driver-assistance, the GS 300 featured Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRAC), and anti-lock brakes (ABS). Safety features included dual front airbags, front side airbags, and side curtain airbags. There were no advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) like lane departure warning or adaptive cruise control, which were uncommon in vehicles of this era.
Crash-test ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) were generally positive, reflecting the vehicle's strong safety performance. The GS 300 provided good occupant protection in frontal and side impacts. The optional Mark Levinson premium sound system was a highly regarded upgrade for audiophiles. Overall, the 2004 GS 300 offered a solid blend of technology and safety for its time, though it lacks many of the advanced features found in modern vehicles.

2004 Lexus GS 300 Prices and Market Value
Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's overall condition (mechanical and cosmetic), maintenance history, mileage, and the presence of optional features like the navigation system or Mark Levinson audio. Lower mileage examples in excellent condition command higher prices. The color and location also play a role, with popular colors and demand in specific regions influencing value.

How Does the 2004 Lexus GS 300 Compare to Other Passenger Sedan?
Feature-wise, the GS 300 offered a comparable level of luxury and technology to its rivals, although some features were optional. The Acura TL provided similar reliability and a more engaging driving experience for a lower price. The Infiniti M35 offered more powerful engine options and a more aggressive design. Pricing for a used GS 300 is often competitive, making it a good value proposition.
Alternatives to the 2004 Lexus GS 300 include the Acura TL (for better value and driving experience), the Lexus ES 330 (for greater comfort and fuel economy), and the Infiniti M35 (for more power and a sportier feel). If reliability is the top priority, the GS 300 is a strong contender. If driving dynamics are more important, the BMW 5 Series might be a better choice, despite its potentially higher maintenance costs.

Final Verdict: Is the 2004 Lexus GS 300 a Good Passenger Sedan?
It is best to avoid examples with high mileage or signs of neglect, and a pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is highly recommended. Specific trims are less critical than the overall condition and maintenance of the vehicle. Buyers should focus on finding a GS 300 that has been well cared for and has had all necessary maintenance performed.

Love My CarI love my car! It is easy to drive and is very dependable. People are surprised that it is as old as it is because looks like a much newer car because of the style. It was a great car to buy!

Comfort meets performanceI have driven/ridden in many different vehicles, and have yet to find a car that is this comfortable while unleashing this kind of power when you need it. It probably doesn't hurt that this car comes with the heart of a naturally aspirated Supra from the factory. The seats are super soft and supportive, all the controls are very ergonomic, and the ride is like floating on clouds. I would not hesitate to recommend a well taken care of Lexus in this trim.

Best Value in LuxuryTotally reliable. Nearly the last of the old body style. Style still holds up well. Xenons, Nav, Dual exhausts, inline six ...better, smoother than v6. Steering wheel shift paddles add to better control in the twisties or even just on the freeway. Add spoiler and you cannot tell the difference from the more expensive v8 model. marginal rear seat room, cd changer in glove box is old style but Mark Levinson Radio cannot be beat. Original tires and battery lasted six years before replacement required. Dealer service tops.
