The Mazda MX-5 Miata, a legendary roadster with roots tracing back to the late 1980s, continues its legacy with the 2022 RF (Retractable Fastback) model. This two-seat sports car features a unique hardtop that folds away for open-air driving. Key trims include Sport, Club, and Grand Touring. The 2022 MX-5 Miata RF stands out for its pure driving experience, affordability, and timeless design. Pricing typically ranges from the low $30,000s to around $40,000. Its popularity stems from its accessible performance and the joy of driving.
The Good

The 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF offers a thrilling driving experience with its nimble handling and responsive engine, appealing to emotional buyers. Practically, it boasts good reliability, fuel efficiency, and a surprisingly comfortable ride for a sports car. The RF's unique design and retractable hardtop add to its allure, while its relative affordability makes it a good value.

The Bad

The 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF's weaknesses include limited cargo space and a snug cabin, which might be uncomfortable for taller drivers. The infotainment system can feel dated compared to competitors. While generally reliable, some owners have reported issues with the convertible top mechanism over time. The ride can be firm, and road noise is noticeable at highway speeds.

What Problems Does the 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF Have?

The 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF generally enjoys good reliability. However, some frequently reported problems, while not widespread, include issues with the infotainment system, such as freezing or unresponsive touchscreens. Some owners have also reported minor electrical glitches. Potential long-term reliability concerns revolve around the retractable hardtop mechanism. While generally robust, its complexity means it could be a source of issues over many years, especially with infrequent maintenance.
Recalls for the MX-5 Miata are relatively rare. It's always best to check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for the most up-to-date recall information for the 2022 model year. Specific model year issues are less prevalent in the 2022 MX-5 Miata RF compared to older models. Earlier generations (NA and NB) had rust concerns, but Mazda has addressed these issues in later models. Owners should still be mindful of regular maintenance, especially fluid changes and inspections, to ensure long-term reliability. Regular lubrication of the hardtop mechanism is also recommended to prevent future problems. Any unusual noises or slow operation of the roof should be addressed promptly to avoid costly repairs.

How long will the 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF last?

With proper maintenance, a 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF can easily exceed 150,000 miles or 10-15 years of service. Many owners report reaching 200,000 miles with regular maintenance. Key factors affecting longevity include adherence to the recommended maintenance schedule, driving habits, and climate conditions. Long-term durability is generally excellent, but the retractable hardtop mechanism and the soft-top (on non-RF models) are potential weak points. Regular lubrication and inspection are crucial. Rust is less of a concern than in older Miatas, but still warrants attention, especially in areas with harsh winter conditions.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF features a 7-inch infotainment screen with Mazda Connect, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto as standard. The base Sport trim includes a basic audio system, while the Club and Grand Touring trims upgrade to a nine-speaker Bose system. Navigation is standard on the Grand Touring trim.
Driver-assistance features include blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert (standard on all trims), and lane departure warning (Grand Touring only). Adaptive front lighting is also available on higher trims. The MX-5 Miata doesn't offer a wide range of advanced driver-assistance systems like adaptive cruise control or automatic emergency braking, focusing instead on the driving experience.
Safety features include standard airbags, anti-lock brakes, and stability control. Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) vary, and it's best to check their websites for the most up-to-date information. The MX-5 Miata's small size can be a factor in crash performance. While it has many standard safety features, its lack of advanced driver-assistance systems might be a drawback for some buyers. Optional features are limited, focusing more on trim-level upgrades like leather seats, heated seats, and the Bose audio system.

Used market prices currently range from the mid-$20,000s to the low $30,000s, depending on mileage, condition, and trim level. reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF Compare to Other Convertible?

The 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF competes with cars like the Toyota GR86/Subaru BRZ, Fiat 124 Spider (discontinued), and potentially higher-end roadsters like the BMW Z4 (though significantly more expensive). Compared to the GR86/BRZ, the Miata RF offers a more refined roadster experience with its retractable hardtop and arguably more engaging handling. The GR86/BRZ provides more practicality with its small rear seats and slightly larger cargo area, along with comparable performance, and slightly lower price.
The Fiat 124 Spider, based on the Miata platform, offered a different engine and styling, but it's no longer in production, making the Miata RF a stronger contender by default. The BMW Z4 offers more power and luxury but at a significantly higher price point.
Alternatives depend on priorities. For pure driving enjoyment and affordability, the Miata RF is hard to beat. If practicality and rear seats are needed, the Toyota GR86/Subaru BRZ are better choices. If a luxurious roadster is desired and budget isn't a concern, the BMW Z4 is an alternative. The Miata RF stands out for its balance of fun, affordability, and reliability.

Final Verdict: Is the 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF a Good Convertible?

The 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF is ideal for driving enthusiasts who prioritize a pure, engaging driving experience and open-air thrills. It's worth buying if you value fun over practicality and don't need a lot of cargo space or passenger room. A used model can offer excellent value, especially if well-maintained. The Club trim strikes a good balance between features and price, offering the limited-slip differential and Bilstein dampers for enhanced performance. The Grand Touring trim is best for those seeking more comfort and luxury features. Buying new allows you to customize the car to your exact specifications and enjoy the full factory warranty.

Stop looking and head for Denver

I purchased this car over the phone from my home in Florida to Groove Mazda in Denver CO. In my entire life I have never had an easier, more pleasant experience buying a car than I did with this dealership and its truly friendly and knowledgeable associate Sara.

Best Miata ever!

Best Miata ever! This RF GT is my fourth Miata and without a doubt it is the best one I have owned. The 181 HP is a definite upgrade from the 155 HP version I had in the 2018 model and overall, it is is smooth and quick in its function. I don't know where Mazda will go from here, but I wanted to make certain to own this naturally aspirated engine version before they moved to a hybrid or some other option. You absolutely won't be disappointed with this model, and I strongly recommend it.
