The Mercedes-Benz SL-Class is a grand touring roadster with a rich history dating back to the 1950s. The 2014 model is part of the sixth generation (R231), produced from 2013-2020. Key trims include the SL550 and SL63 AMG. Pricing in 2014 ranged from approximately $107,000 to over $145,000. Its blend of luxury, performance, and a retractable hardtop makes it a popular choice for those seeking open-air driving in style and comfort.
The Good

The 2014 SL-Class offers thrilling performance with powerful engines. Comfort is paramount, with a luxurious interior and refined ride. Its stunning design appeals emotionally, while the retractable hardtop offers practicality. Although not the most efficient, it balances performance with reasonable fuel economy for its class. Reliability is generally good, adding to long-term value.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2014 SL-Class include potentially high maintenance and repair costs, especially for the AMG models. The complex retractable hardtop mechanism can be prone to issues. Some owners have reported electrical problems. While not unreliable, be prepared for potentially higher ownership costs than some competitors.

What Problems Does the 2014 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2014 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class can include issues with the retractable hardtop mechanism, such as slow operation, failure to open or close completely, or leaks. Electrical problems, including malfunctions with the infotainment system, sensors, and other electronic components, have also been reported. Some owners have experienced issues with the adaptive suspension system, particularly with the hydraulic components. While not extremely common, oil leaks from the engine and transmission can occur.

Recalls for the 2014 SL-Class have been issued for various reasons, including issues with the fuel system, airbags, and other safety-related components. It's essential to check the vehicle's VIN for any outstanding recalls.

Long-term reliability concerns generally revolve around the complexity of the vehicle. The abundance of electronics and sophisticated systems can increase the likelihood of problems as the car ages. High-performance components on the AMG models, such as the engine and transmission, may require more frequent maintenance and repairs. Regular servicing and preventative maintenance are crucial for mitigating potential issues and ensuring long-term reliability.

How long will the 2014 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class last?

With proper maintenance, a 2014 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class can easily provide 150,000 miles or more of service. Many owners report enjoying their SL for 10+ years. However, longevity heavily depends on adherence to the maintenance schedule. Long-term durability can be affected by the complex systems. The hydraulic suspension components and retractable hardtop mechanisms are potential weaknesses. Neglecting these systems leads to premature failure and costly repairs. Regular fluid changes, inspections, and prompt attention to warning signs are essential to maximize lifespan.

I have owned 3 Range Rover Luxurty Sports, and I find that each have been superb vehicles. However I do not like the style and design of the 2014 Sport. When it arrived at the dealership, I opted for a 2013 instead.

2014 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class Prices and Market Value

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class had a starting MSRP of around $107,000 for the SL550 and upwards of $145,000 for the SL63 AMG when new. Current used market prices range from approximately $30,000 to $50,000+, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. Depreciation is significant, as with most luxury vehicles. How Does the 2014 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class Compare to Other Convertible?

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class competes with other luxury roadsters like the Porsche 911 Cabriolet, BMW 6 Series Convertible, and Jaguar F-Type Convertible. In terms of performance, the SL63 AMG rivals the Porsche 911, while the SL550 offers a balance of power and comfort. Feature-wise, the SL-Class is well-equipped, but rivals may offer more modern technology. Reliability can be a concern compared to the Porsche. The BMW 6 Series offers similar levels of luxury but a slightly different driving experience. The Jaguar F-Type emphasizes sportiness and styling at a potentially lower price point.

Alternatives include the Porsche 911 Cabriolet for superior handling and a stronger reliability record, although at a potentially higher initial price. The BMW 6 Series Convertible provides a similar luxury experience with a different design aesthetic. The Jaguar F-Type offers a more driver-focused experience, prioritizing performance and style. Ultimately, the best choice depends on individual priorities, whether it's performance, luxury, reliability, or price.

Final Verdict: Is the 2014 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class a Good Convertible?

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class is ideal for those seeking a luxurious and comfortable grand touring roadster with a retractable hardtop. It's worth buying if you appreciate its blend of performance, style, and open-air driving. A used SL-Class can offer excellent value, provided it has been well-maintained and thoroughly inspected. Coolest and Best car I've owned

I've had it for 3 years, Never a problem , Fast as xxxx, reliable , great looking , hard top convertible is delightful, feels like a couple when up, no rattles, I gave it a 4 in comfort, but it IS a 2 seater sports car and very comfy for what it is , I had an '85 380 sl ; loved it but this blows it away . Gas mileage not great but what do you expect from 429 hp, Car still looks and rides like new !

Looking To Buy A New SL500?

The car is great. I started out looking for a 2003, but discovered that the 2004 (and newer) has a 7 speed shift instead of the previous year(s) 5 speed shift. This makes a world of difference in the ride and the performance. if you're looking for a new SL500, wait until you can afford a 2004 or newer....you will thank me. One last word of advise....GET AN EXTENDED WARRANTY!

Beautiful car, amazing ride, and REALLY FAST

I bought the Mercedes SL550 a few months ago. This car is truly a work of art. First of all, it is a beautiful car, whether you have the top down or top up. Second, it has such an amazingly smooth ride. When I drive this it feels like I am flying through the sky. And WOW this car is insanely fast. The SL has so much power, and you have so much torque available at hand. Put your foot down and you feel like the god of thunder. It is an incredible car, and I am blessed to be able to afford its high price tag, but it is definitely worth it.
