The Good
The 2016 SL-Class delivers impressive performance from its potent engines. Its luxurious interior and comfortable ride appeal to those seeking refinement. While not the most fuel-efficient, its iconic design and brand cachet hold emotional appeal. Practically, it offers a retractable hardtop for year-round enjoyment and Mercedes-Benz's reputation (though not always perfectly realized) for quality.
The Bad
Potential weaknesses of the 2016 SL-Class include higher maintenance costs associated with a luxury vehicle. Some owners have reported issues with the complex retractable hardtop mechanism. The rear seats are virtually non-existent, limiting practicality. Finally, its considerable price tag, even on the used market, can be a deterrent. Be sure to check for any hydraulic leaks related to the top.

Analysis
What Problems Does the 2016 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class Have?
Specifically, some earlier model years within the SL-Class generation (including some close to 2016) experienced issues with the engine management system and transmission software, although these were often addressed through software updates. It's crucial to check the vehicle's service history for any relevant recalls or Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) related to these concerns. Pre-purchase inspections by a qualified Mercedes-Benz technician are highly recommended to identify any potential problems before committing to a purchase. Long-term reliability can be affected by regular maintenance and proper care, but the complex systems in the SL-Class mean that upkeep can be expensive.
How long will the 2016 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class last?
What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Optional features included a premium Harman Kardon sound system, a panoramic sunroof, and the Driver Assistance Package, which added adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and cross-traffic alert. The Magic Sky Control roof, which allows the driver to adjust the transparency of the glass roof, was also a popular option.
Safety features included multiple airbags, stability control, and anti-lock brakes. While the NHTSA and IIHS did not specifically crash-test the 2016 SL-Class, Mercedes-Benz vehicles generally perform well in safety tests. However, due to the low production volume and the nature of the vehicle (a convertible), it was not subjected to full testing. The robust construction and advanced safety systems contribute to a feeling of security.

How Does the 2016 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class Compare to Other Sedan?
Price-wise, the SL-Class is generally in line with its competitors, but depreciation can make used models more appealing. Alternatives to consider include the Porsche 911 Cabriolet for its superior handling and reliability, or the BMW 6 Series Convertible for a slightly more practical and modern grand touring experience. The Jaguar F-Type offers a more visceral and engaging driving experience, but can be less refined. Ultimately, the best choice depends on individual priorities and preferences.

Real head turner with the top up or downSl400 is really a great car, comfortable, fast, reliable, well put together, little low to the ground so a little harder to get in and out of but once inside the car you donβt feel like it low and lot of room inside, love this car.

Awesome ride.I have an SLK350 and want something newer/roomier. The SL is the perfect upgrade for me. Can't wait until I see the deal I like.

Sleek design, very advancedI bought this vehicle for my wife. She fell in love with the look and I couldnt get her to look at any other cars. This is a great GT car and has EVERY creature comfort out there. Its a very smooth ride and is very fast. I would say if I could go back I would spec out a SL400 for her because she doesnt need, or use the 449 hp and 513 lb of torque. I couldlve saved 20k. With all the technology on it it can sometimes get confusing but over time Ive figured it out. If you are looking for a great GT car this is it, but if you are looking for a sports car, this isnt it. Buy a AMG GT.

My review.I have been driving various.SL's for 25 years and as a 2 seat grand touring car , I would not choose anything else.

If you want a hard top convertible...this is it!MBZ has been making the SL for 50+ years and the build quality, style and performance are excellent. If you are looking for a top of the line hard top that converts to a convertible, I highly recommend you test drive an SL.
