The 2009 Porsche Cayman is a mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive sports coupe that delivers exceptional handling and performance. As a hardtop coupe version of the Boxster convertible, the Cayman debuted in 2006. Key trims for 2009 include the base Cayman and the more powerful Cayman S. The original MSRP ranged from around $50,000 to $60,000+. Its balanced chassis, potent engines, and Porsche pedigree contribute to its enduring popularity.
The Good

The 2009 Cayman offers thrilling performance thanks to its responsive engines and precise handling, appealing to enthusiasts. Its iconic Porsche design and relatively comfortable interior cater to emotional desires. While not the most efficient, it's reasonably reliable and retains value well, offering practical benefits to discerning buyers.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2009 Cayman include the possibility of intermediate shaft (IMS) bearing failure (though less common than earlier models), bore scoring in the cylinders, and potential for oil leaks. Also, be wary of expensive Porsche maintenance and repair costs. Pre-purchase inspection is highly recommended.

What Problems Does the 2009 Porsche Cayman Have?

The 2009 Porsche Cayman, while generally reliable, has some potential issues to be aware of. While the dreaded IMS bearing failure is less prevalent in the 987.2 generation (2009+), it's still a concern, especially for early production models. Bore scoring, a condition where the cylinder walls become damaged, is another potential issue, especially in hotter climates or with insufficient maintenance. Oil leaks can occur, often from the rear main seal or valve cover gaskets.

Recalls for the 2009 Cayman are relatively infrequent, but it's crucial to check the NHTSA website for any applicable safety recalls based on the VIN. Long-term reliability depends heavily on maintenance. Neglecting scheduled services can exacerbate existing issues and lead to costly repairs. Common areas of concern include the cooling system (water pump, thermostat housing), suspension components (worn bushings), and electrical systems (sensor failures). Proper preventative maintenance and diligent attention to any warning signs are essential for maximizing the lifespan of a 2009 Cayman.

How long will the 2009 Porsche Cayman last?

A well-maintained 2009 Porsche Cayman can easily exceed 150,000 miles or more, providing many years of service. Average mileage varies depending on usage, but it's reasonable to expect 8,000-12,000 miles per year. Long-term durability hinges on consistent maintenance. Key weaknesses over time include potential cooling system issues (leaks, pump failure), suspension wear (bushings, shocks), and age-related deterioration of rubber components. Addressing these proactively ensures longevity. Caymans driven hard or neglected are likely to experience more problems sooner.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2009 Porsche Cayman's built-in tech is relatively basic compared to modern cars. Standard features include a CD player, AM/FM radio, and manual climate control. Optional upgrades include a navigation system (Porsche Communication Management or PCM), a Bose surround sound system, and Bluetooth connectivity.

Driver-assistance features were limited for this model year. It does not have features like adaptive cruise control or lane-keeping assist. Safety features include standard anti-lock brakes (ABS), stability control (Porsche Stability Management or PSM), and front and side airbags.

Crash test ratings from NHTSA and IIHS are limited for the 2009 Cayman specifically. However, the closely related Boxster (convertible) received generally positive safety ratings. Always check the official NHTSA and IIHS websites for the most up-to-date and specific crash test information. The focus of the 2009 Cayman was primarily on driving experience rather than cutting-edge technology or advanced driver-assistance systems. The optional Sport Chrono package added a stopwatch on the dashboard and adjusted engine management for more aggressive performance.

2009 Porsche Cayman Prices and Market Value

The 2009 Porsche Cayman had an original MSRP ranging from approximately $50,000 to $60,000+, depending on the trim and options. Used market prices currently range from around $20,000 to $35,000, influenced by mileage, condition, and options. The Cayman has depreciated, but Porsche's reputation for performance and build quality helps it retain value better than some competitors. Factors affecting resale value include a clean title, service history, low mileage, desirable options (like PASM or Sport Chrono), and overall condition. Manual transmissions are often more desirable, increasing resale value.

2009 Porsche Cayman Cost of Ownership

The 2009 Porsche Cayman is generally costly to own. Insurance premiums are higher than average due to its sports car classification and potential repair costs. Fuel costs are moderate, depending on driving style. Maintenance and repairs can be expensive, especially at Porsche dealerships. Routine services, like oil changes and brake replacements, are pricier than for mainstream vehicles. Unexpected repairs can be very costly. Long-term ownership requires budgeting for these expenses.

Insurance for a 2009 Porsche Cayman is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Coupe with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2009 Porsche Cayman Compare to Other Coupe?

The 2009 Porsche Cayman competes with sports coupes like the BMW Z4, Audi TT, and Nissan 370Z. In terms of performance, the Cayman offers superior handling and a more balanced driving experience compared to the Z4 and TT. The 370Z offers similar performance at a lower price but lacks the Cayman's refinement. Features are comparable across the class, but the Cayman's optional equipment can significantly increase its price.

Reliability is generally good for the Cayman, but potential IMS bearing and bore scoring issues are concerns. The Z4 and TT can be more reliable in some respects. The 370Z is known for its robust engine but has other potential issues. Price-wise, the Cayman is typically more expensive than the 370Z and similar to or slightly more than a comparably equipped Z4 or TT.

Alternatives include the BMW 1 Series M Coupe (if you can find one), which offers similar performance and driving thrills. For a more modern and reliable option, consider a newer Porsche 718 Cayman, but be prepared to pay a premium. The 2009 Cayman strikes a great balance of performance and Porsche pedigree at a reasonable price point.

Final Verdict: Is the 2009 Porsche Cayman a Good Coupe?

The 2009 Porsche Cayman is ideal for driving enthusiasts seeking a balanced and engaging sports coupe experience. It's worth buying if you appreciate Porsche's engineering and are willing to invest in proper maintenance. Purchasing a well-maintained used example is the most sensible option, as new models are no longer available. A pre-purchase inspection by a qualified Porsche mechanic is crucial to identify any potential issues. The Cayman S offers more power and performance but comes at a higher price. Ensure you factor in higher running costs before making a decision. Prioritize condition and service history over specific trims.

Cayman S. Nearly perfect

I bought this car barely used, and have owned it for 10 years. I don't know what I'd change. Great to drive in all situations, and the cargo space makes it "practical" for all situations.

One of the finest Porsches ever made.

Motor Trend's Drivers Car of the Year for 2009. A safe, reliable, fast, superior handling car with room for a week's worth of luggage. Eye-catching curves in Macadamia metallic brown.

Best entry level Porsche for the money

Bought my 2009 Cayman used with about 70k on it. It a a base 2.9 engine, but it has plenty power to mach exelent chassi. Handling is very neutral with very nicely weighted steering feel, provided by hydraulic power streering. Stock shifter felt a little sloppy, probably because of the milage. I switched it to oem Porsche short shifter, now it feels great. Interior is comfortable with plenty of small storage. My only gripe about the interior is that center console is easily scratched and plastic is peeling on some of the interior surfaces. Seat are very comfortable and "frunk" and rear hatch provide plently luggage storage.

Great car for the corners......and date night!

As everyone that knows about Caymans says, the car is so perfectly balanced that in the corners the car drives better than most 911's. What is surprising tho is that during everyday driving, the cars headroom and ease of getting in and out really make you appreciate the car. You expect the car to be fast, you expect the handling, and the comfort but the room for a 6'2 guy getting in and out everyday is really amazing. The car has also been very reliable and has not been in for much more than regular maintenance.

Well-Rounded, Everyday Sports Car

A surprisingly low-maintenance and convenient commuter car. Though obviously intended for more spirited driving, the suspension on the Cayman base is not as harsh as expected in daily, city driving. Having 2 trunks and a slim pass-through from the rear hatch has allowed me to transport multiple, albeit smaller, odd-shaped items. While the sleek shape is highly attractive and occasionally garners unwanted attention, the price point gives the owner some confidence to leave the car in a parking lot or on the street with little worry. On weekends, the car is highly capable for mountain roads and road trips with its precise steering and excellent brake feel. The Cayman S will give more power, but with a stiffer suspension that could make daily commutes tiring. Overall, the amount of fun, the convenience (considering it is a 2-seater), and its price point make this car an excellent value.

What a machina

The 09 cayman is simply an incredible machine. I've had cars with almost twice the hp and Tq but the driving pleasure of the cayman is unparalleled. It's mid engine chassis balance is like few in the world along with light weight. The shifter is smooth and the exotic sound from the perf exhaust raises goose bumps. I hope to keep this gem forever and pass it on to my son or daughter one day!

Perfect Balance

I traded in my 2011 Audi TT for this 2009 Cayman because I wanted to feel like I was actually driving a car as opposed to a car driving me. I have the base 265hp model and it is everything that my wife and I could ask for. Excellent build quality, outstanding handling but most importantly the numbness that I felt in my Audi is no longer present. Fuel milage isn't quite as good as the TT, but I don't care as the performance is on a different level. If your tired of numb sport coupes and long for something that can give you smiles on the road as well as the track look into a Cayman. You won't be disappointed.

A Car For One Purpose

If you want a car that you can drive in a sporty fashion and get some time on the track, this is one of the best for the price. The Cayman S is worth the extra price compared to the Cayman if pulling G forces and "riding on rails" is what you desire while getting over 20 mpg. This is a car for a singular purpose and I love it!!!!!

Cayman Awesome Except for Blown Engines

I overextended and bought the dream car of my life. It would blow a large white plume of smoke on startup and the dealer claimed it was normal. However, if you google 'Cayman Engine Failure' you'll see that this is a common problem and many engines not only smoke but blow up. Don't take my word for it, do your research before you spend this much money on your dream car. Porsche will not support you.
