The 2012 Porsche Cayman is a mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive sports car, a coupe derived from the Boxster roadster. Part of the 987.2 generation (2009-2012), the Cayman offered a fixed-roof alternative to its convertible sibling. Key trims included the base Cayman, Cayman S, and Cayman R. Original pricing ranged from approximately $53,000 to $67,000. The Cayman's balanced handling, powerful engine, and Porsche pedigree made it a popular choice for driving enthusiasts.
The Good

The 2012 Cayman delivers thrilling performance with sharp handling and potent engines. Its iconic Porsche design appeals emotionally, while its relative reliability and decent fuel economy (for a sports car) provide practical benefits. The Cayman's comfortable interior also makes it suitable for daily driving, balancing fun and functionality.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2012 Porsche Cayman include the possibility of IMS bearing failure (although less common than earlier models), bore scoring in the cylinders (especially the S model), and potential for expensive repairs. Check for oil leaks and conduct a pre-purchase inspection by a qualified Porsche mechanic.

What Problems Does the 2012 Porsche Cayman Have?

The 2012 Porsche Cayman, while generally reliable, can experience certain issues. The intermediate shaft (IMS) bearing failure, a notorious problem in earlier Porsche models, is less prevalent in the 2009-2012 Cayman models but still a concern, especially on older models. Bore scoring, caused by piston wear in the cylinders, particularly in the 3.4L engine of the Cayman S and R, is another potential issue. Symptoms include increased oil consumption and engine noise.
Other potential problems include oil leaks (particularly from the rear main seal), water pump failures, and issues with the direct fuel injection system. Recalls for the 2012 Cayman have been relatively limited but it's crucial to check the NHTSA website for any applicable recalls based on the vehicle's VIN.
Long-term reliability concerns center around the aforementioned engine issues and the potential for expensive repairs due to the Cayman's complex engineering. Regular maintenance and careful monitoring of oil levels and engine sounds are essential for mitigating these risks. A pre-purchase inspection by a qualified Porsche technician is highly recommended.

How long will the 2012 Porsche Cayman last?

A well-maintained 2012 Porsche Cayman can easily exceed 150,000 miles and provide over 10 years of service. However, longevity is heavily dependent on maintenance habits. Neglecting oil changes, skipping scheduled maintenance, or ignoring warning signs can significantly shorten its lifespan. Long-term durability is generally good, but potential weaknesses, such as IMS bearing or bore scoring, need to be addressed promptly to prevent catastrophic engine failure. Preventative maintenance, particularly regular oil analysis and inspections, is crucial for maximizing the car's lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2012 Porsche Cayman features a relatively basic tech suite compared to modern vehicles. Standard features include a CD player, auxiliary input, and automatic climate control. The optional Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system offered a touchscreen display with navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, and enhanced audio options.
Driver-assistance features were limited; available options included parking sensors and cruise control. Safety features included anti-lock brakes, stability control, and multiple airbags. Optional features included bi-xenon headlights and a tire pressure monitoring system.
Crash-test ratings for the 2012 Cayman are not readily available from both NHTSA and IIHS. It is important to note that smaller sports cars are not always subjected to the same rigorous testing as more mainstream vehicles.
The Cayman R featured lighter weight but similar tech and safety. Overall, while the 2012 Cayman provides the basic features, buyers should not expect the extensive tech and driver-assistance systems found in newer cars. Many owners often upgrade the sound system, infotainment and other convenience features to better match more current technology.

2012 Porsche Cayman Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2012 Porsche Cayman ranged from around $53,000 to $67,000 depending on the trim and options. Current used market prices typically range from $25,000 to $45,000, influenced by mileage, condition, and options. Caymans have depreciated, but retain value better than many other cars, especially well-maintained examples with desirable options (like PDK or sport seats). Low mileage, a clean title, and a complete service history positively impact resale value. The Cayman R commands a premium due to its rarity and performance focus.

2012 Porsche Cayman Cost of Ownership

The 2012 Porsche Cayman is not an economical vehicle to own. Insurance costs are higher than average due to its sports car classification. Fuel costs can be moderate with careful driving, but spirited driving will significantly lower MPG. Maintenance and repair costs can be substantial, especially for major engine or transmission work. Routine maintenance is more expensive than a typical car. Long-term ownership costs can be high if potential issues like IMS bearing failure or bore scoring arise. Budgeting for unexpected repairs is essential.

2012 Porsche Cayman Insurance

Insurance for a 2012 Porsche Cayman is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Coupe with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2012 Porsche Cayman Compare to Other Coupe?

The 2012 Porsche Cayman competed with vehicles like the BMW Z4, Audi TT, and Nissan 370Z. Compared to the Z4, the Cayman offers superior handling and a more engaging driving experience, though the Z4 provides a convertible option. The Audi TT boasts a more modern interior and available all-wheel drive, but lacks the Cayman's raw driving feel. The 370Z is less refined but offers a more affordable entry point to the sports car market.
In terms of reliability, the Cayman is generally considered more reliable than the Z4, but similar to the TT and more reliable than the 370Z. The Cayman's key advantage is its mid-engine layout, providing exceptional balance and handling. Alternatives to consider include a newer Porsche Boxster/Cayman generation for updated technology and potentially improved reliability. The BMW M2 offers similar performance and a more practical backseat. Another option is the Chevrolet Corvette, offering more power and a lower price point, but lacking the Cayman's finesse.

Final Verdict: Is the 2012 Porsche Cayman a Good Coupe?

The 2012 Porsche Cayman is ideal for driving enthusiasts seeking a balanced, mid-engine sports car experience. It's worth buying if you prioritize handling, performance, and the Porsche brand. A well-maintained example with a clean service history is crucial. The Cayman S or R offer enhanced performance, but the base model provides a satisfying experience. Consider a pre-purchase inspection to address potential issues like IMS bearing or bore scoring. While ownership costs can be high, the Cayman delivers a rewarding driving experience that justifies the investment for the right buyer. Be prepared for sports car maintenance costs!

Cayman R

The Cayman R is amazing on all levels. The R handles like a race car but is soft enough for the street. The mid-engine configuration (which is also leveraged by the factory Porsche race team for their GTLM entries) is superior. This car will be a collectable very soon as only 461 made it to the US.

Most exciting and beautiful car to own

Never though I could feel this way. I found a perfect traveling companion, always eager to please, gives unerringly whenever asked and does so unfailingly. Easy on the eye, passers by stare at her beauty. Graced with power, intelligence and a commanding presence with a softness within that belies her strength. Cayman S. Mine forever!
