The 2016 Porsche Macan is a compact luxury SUV that debuted in 2014 as Porsche's entry into a rapidly growing segment. Its body style is a five-door SUV. Key trims include the Macan, Macan S, Macan GTS, and Macan Turbo. New pricing ranged approximately from $47,000 to over $76,000 depending on the trim and options. The Macan stands out because it delivers genuine Porsche performance and handling in an SUV format, making it popular with drivers who crave a sporty driving experience.
The Good

The 2016 Porsche Macan offers thrilling performance and sporty handling that appeals to emotional buyers. Its comfortable interior and upscale design provide a premium feel. While not the most fuel-efficient, it delivers reasonable economy for its class. Practical advantages include available all-wheel drive and ample cargo space. Reliability is generally good, adding to its value proposition.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2016 Porsche Macan include higher maintenance costs compared to non-luxury SUVs. The infotainment system can feel dated. Some owners have reported transfer case issues. The rear seat legroom might be tight for taller passengers. Option packages can quickly inflate the purchase price. Be aware of potential oil leaks as the car ages.

What Problems Does the 2016 Porsche Macan Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2016 Porsche Macan include issues with the transfer case, particularly in earlier model years. This can manifest as noises or vibrations during low-speed maneuvers. Some owners have also reported issues with the timing chain tensioner. Oil leaks are a concern as the vehicle ages, especially around the valve cover gaskets and timing chain cover.

Recalls for the 2016 Macan were issued for issues such as fuel leaks, which could increase the risk of fire. Check the NHTSA website for a complete list of recalls and ensure any necessary repairs have been performed.

Long-term reliability can be affected by adherence to the recommended maintenance schedule. Skipping services, especially oil changes, can exacerbate engine wear. The PCM system can also show its age compared to newer infotainment systems. Overall, the Macan is generally reliable, but these specific issues should be inspected during pre-purchase inspections and addressed proactively with maintenance.

How long will the 2016 Porsche Macan last?

A 2016 Porsche Macan, with proper maintenance, can easily reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or more. Owners who follow the recommended maintenance schedule, including regular oil changes and timely repairs, report fewer issues. However, without proper care, weaknesses such as oil leaks, transfer case problems, and suspension component wear can appear sooner. Long-term durability depends heavily on preventative maintenance and addressing issues promptly. Neglecting maintenance can lead to costly repairs down the line, shortening the vehicle's lifespan.
Positive Owner Reviews
Jonathan
Great concept for a small SUV. Was great for the first 50k. Then the electrical issues began. Very poor engineering and construction. This car was manufactured with a planned obsolescence.
Josh
Fabspeed Exhaust sounds amazing!! Beautiful Camel Interior. I love this vehicle and am sad to say goodbye. I am purchasing a larger vehicle for the family. Never had any problems and have all maintenance documentation. From the moment you start her up, the elegance of the Turbo-Charged engine with Fabspeed Exhaust is undeniable and demands attention from all that hears.

Words don't do justice to the joy I get from seeing, sitting and driving this sports car like SUV. I thought a Cayenne Turbo drove well, then I tried this. very reliable, shifts lightning fast, mileage is not the best. It handles excellent, stops on a dime. 0-60 in 4.2 seconds. Not much else can beat it. The resale is 53.3%, while a 4 Runner is 58%. Look for the loaded models, that come with air suspension, 18 way seats, pano roof, sport exhaust, and Sports Plus. I suggest you pick one up ASAP.
Negative Owner Reviews

This was a great car in the beginning. When the warranty expired, it was a total pit. Definitely not for a family. The back passengers need to be leg less to ride or a car seat for kids under 5. Step up to the bigger brother for more room if you want to stay with Porsche. I went to a Jeep trackhawk and been zero issues

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2016 Porsche Macan features the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system, which includes a touchscreen display for navigation, audio controls, and vehicle settings. Entertainment features include a standard sound system with available upgrades like a Bose or Burmester sound system.

Standard driver-assistance features include lane departure warning. Optional features include adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and a rearview camera. Safety features include anti-lock brakes, stability control, and multiple airbags.

Crash test ratings from the IIHS show that the 2016 Macan achieved a "Good" rating in several categories, demonstrating its strong safety performance. The NHTSA also provided good overall safety scores.

While the PCM system can feel dated compared to newer systems, it still provides essential functionality. The optional driver-assistance features enhance safety and convenience. The Macan's strong crash-test ratings provide peace of mind for safety-conscious buyers. However, it lacks some of the advanced driver-assistance features found in newer vehicles.

2016 Porsche Macan Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2016 Porsche Macan ranged from approximately $47,000 to over $76,000, depending on the trim and options. Current used market prices vary depending on mileage, condition, and trim, but typically range from $20,000 to $40,000. The Macan depreciates, but it holds its value relatively well compared to some other luxury SUVs, largely due to the Porsche brand's strong reputation and the vehicle's performance capabilities. Lower mileage, a clean Carfax report, and a well-maintained service history will positively impact resale value.

2016 Porsche Macan Cost of Ownership

The 2016 Porsche Macan is not particularly economical to own. Insurance costs are higher than average due to its luxury status and performance capabilities. Fuel costs can be significant, especially with the V6 engines. Maintenance and repair costs are also higher compared to non-luxury brands. Expect to pay more for specialized Porsche service and parts. Long-term ownership costs can be considerable, making it a costly vehicle to maintain, but many find the driving experience worth the expense.

2016 Porsche Macan Insurance

Insurance for a 2016 Porsche Macan is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2016 Porsche Macan Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2016 Porsche Macan competes with other compact luxury SUVs like the Audi Q5, BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class, and Acura RDX. In terms of performance, the Macan stands out with its sporty handling and powerful engine options, often exceeding the driving dynamics of its rivals. Feature-wise, it offers a comparable suite of luxury amenities, though its infotainment system is less modern than some competitors.

Reliability is generally good, but the Audi Q5 and Acura RDX have a slight edge in some surveys. Price-wise, the Macan tends to be more expensive, especially when new, and potentially on the used market depending on condition and mileage.

Alternatives to the Macan include the BMW X3 for its blend of performance and practicality, and the Acura RDX for its strong reliability and value. The Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class offers a more luxurious experience. If prioritizing reliability and value over outright performance, the Acura RDX might be a better alternative. However, for a true sports car experience in an SUV, the Macan remains a top choice.

Final Verdict: Is the 2016 Porsche Macan a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2016 Porsche Macan is ideal for drivers who prioritize a sporty driving experience and are willing to pay a premium for the Porsche badge. It's worth buying if you value performance and handling above all else in a compact SUV. A used 2016 Macan can be a good value, especially if you find one with a well-documented maintenance history. Consider the Macan S or GTS trims for a balance of performance and features. Be aware of potential maintenance costs and the age of the infotainment system before purchasing. If budget and long-term running costs are primary concerns, other alternatives might be more suitable.

I think most of people here have not driven a Macan 3.

I think most of people here have not driven a Macan 3.6 Turbo engine with 400+ HP. This car is amazing you can't compare this one with other lower Macan models. this is the one to have.. We owned several Porsches including Cayennes turboS. This is a compact daily driving machine with Lot's of power and is fully loaded. The turbos 3.6 cost over $100K after taxes for a reason , Please don't compare this model with other low built Porsches for middle class, this is a High End Vehicle for a reason ...maybe the same as compare the Boxer with a 911 Turbo S.

Wouldn't but a used porsche again

Heavy heavy heavy service fees if you take to dealership. We bought a 2016 salvage Title for 25k and have put roughly 35-40k into it over 3 years. Transfer case went out. Brakes are a 4-5k, transmission acted up porsche Said a new mechantronics unit "may" fix. $6,700 and we said no thanks. Lease a new one, keep it under milage, then run when lease is up. We may go bmw next and cross our fingers. This porsche has been an absolute money pit, yet wife loves it and only wants porsche from now on. Of course, when all the expenses land on me right

Both a fun and practical vehicle

This vehicle provided an impressive driving experience while being a practical solution to my daily needs. Routine maintenance costs were certainly on the high side, but reliability was equally high.

By far a good blend of performance and utility

I owned my Macan S since new. The fun factor is there in the drive and how it handles like a smaller car like a Mini Cooper. It saved me with the automatic braking that comes with automatic cruise control. One thing to keep watch is the transfer case. Google Macan S transfer case and you will see. I got my transfer case changed under warranty. You will notice a slippage on start up. It is not normal, it is the symptom of the transfer case going. I do my own oil changes and is quite easy to do. Red 14 way seats do come at a premium. Overall it is a fun car to own and drive.
