The 2018 Ram 2500 is a heavy-duty pickup truck known for its robust capabilities and comfortable ride. Part of the fourth generation (2010-2018), the 2018 model continued Ram's reputation for powerful work trucks. Available in regular, crew, and mega cab configurations, key trims include Tradesman, Big Horn/Lone Star, Laramie, Power Wagon, and Limited. The original MSRP ranged approximately from $33,000 to $65,000+. Its standout features include a coil-spring rear suspension offering a smoother ride than competitors, and powerful engine options.
The Good

The 2018 Ram 2500 boasts impressive towing and payload capacity, appealing to practical buyers needing a workhorse. Its comfortable ride, particularly with the coil-spring rear suspension, and well-designed interior offer a premium feel. The powerful Cummins diesel engine provides strong performance, stirring an emotional connection for truck enthusiasts. It's a good blend of capability and comfort.

The Bad

What Problems Does the 2018 Ram 2500 Have?

The 2018 Ram 2500, like many vehicles, has some reported issues. Common concerns include problems with the Uconnect infotainment system, such as freezing, slow response times, and connectivity issues. Some owners have reported electrical problems, including issues with sensors and wiring harnesses.
The diesel engine, while powerful, can experience issues related to the emissions system, such as the diesel particulate filter (DPF) and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system. These can lead to reduced performance and increased maintenance costs. Rust, particularly in areas with road salt, is another potential concern, especially on older models. It's crucial to inspect the undercarriage for signs of corrosion.
Recalls for the 2018 Ram 2500 have included issues related to the rearview camera, potentially displaying a blank screen, and problems with the park pawl not engaging properly. These recalls should be addressed by a Ram dealer to ensure the vehicle is safe to operate.
Long-term reliability can depend heavily on maintenance. Regular servicing, especially oil changes and filter replacements, is essential for both the gas and diesel engines. Paying attention to cooling system maintenance is also crucial to prevent overheating.

How long will the 2018 Ram 2500 last?

With proper maintenance, the 2018 Ram 2500 can easily achieve 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report exceeding this milestone, with some reaching 300,000 miles. Expecting 10-15 years of service is reasonable with diligent care.
Durability hinges on regular maintenance and addressing issues promptly. Weaknesses over time can include suspension components wearing out, especially if used frequently for heavy towing or off-roading. The Uconnect system may become outdated, and electronic components could fail. Rust, especially in northern climates, remains a long-term threat.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2018 Ram 2500 offers a range of tech, entertainment, and safety features, varying by trim level. The Uconnect infotainment system, available with an 8.4-inch touchscreen, is a highlight, offering Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration (depending on the version). Lower trims have a smaller 5-inch screen or a basic radio.
Entertainment features include available premium audio systems from Alpine or Harman Kardon, multiple USB ports, and a rear-seat entertainment system with DVD player.
Driver-assistance features were relatively limited compared to newer trucks. Available features included a rearview camera, park assist sensors, and a cargo-view camera. More advanced features like blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control were not widely available.
Safety features include standard airbags, anti-lock brakes, and electronic stability control. Higher trims offered features like automatic high beams and rain-sensing wipers.
Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) are generally not available for heavy-duty trucks like the Ram 2500 due to their size and weight.

2018 Ram 2500 Prices and Market Value

The 2018 Ram 2500 had an original MSRP ranging from approximately $33,000 to $65,000+, depending on trim and options. Current used market prices range from roughly $25,000 to $50,000, depending on condition, mileage, and configuration. Depreciation is typical for a truck of this age, but the Ram 2500 holds its value relatively well, especially diesel models.
Factors affecting resale value include engine type (diesel commands a premium), trim level (higher trims retain more value), condition, mileage, and location. Trucks in good condition with lower mileage and desirable options will fetch higher prices.

2018 Ram 2500 Cost of Ownership

The 2018 Ram 2500 is generally considered costly to own. Insurance premiums are typically higher due to its size and potential repair costs. Fuel economy is low, especially with the gas engines. Maintenance, including oil changes and tire replacements, can be expensive. Repairs, particularly for the diesel engine or Uconnect system, can also be costly. While durable, the Ram 2500 requires significant investment to keep it running smoothly over the long term.

2018 Ram 2500 Insurance

Insurance for a 2018 Ram 2500 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Truck with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2018 Ram 2500 Compare to Other Truck?

The 2018 Ram 2500 competes with the Ford F-250 and Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD. In terms of performance, the Ram offers strong engine options, particularly the Cummins diesel, which rivals Ford's Power Stroke and Chevy's Duramax. The Ram stands out with its coil-spring rear suspension, offering a more comfortable ride than the leaf-spring setups in the Ford and Chevy.
Features-wise, the Ram's Uconnect system is generally well-regarded, but some competitors offer more advanced driver-assistance features. Reliability is comparable across the three, with each having potential issues. The Ford F-250 is known for its robust construction, while the Silverado 2500HD offers a more traditional truck feel.
In terms of price, the Ram is generally competitive. If ride comfort is a top priority, the Ram 2500 is a strong choice. If advanced technology and driver-assistance features are paramount, the Ford F-250 might be a better alternative. The Chevy Silverado 2500HD offers a balanced approach. The Nissan Titan XD could also be considered, but it generally lags behind in terms of overall capability and refinement.

The 2018 Ram 2500 is ideal for buyers needing a capable and comfortable heavy-duty truck for towing, hauling, and general work purposes. It's particularly well-suited for those who prioritize ride quality. Whether it's worth buying depends on individual needs and budget.
A used 2018 Ram 2500 can be a good value, especially if it's been well-maintained. Consider higher trims like Laramie or Limited for added comfort and features. The Cummins diesel engine is desirable for its power and towing capabilities, but be prepared for higher maintenance costs. Thoroughly inspect any used truck for rust and signs of wear before purchasing.
