What Problems Does the 2014 Tesla Model S Have?

The 2014 Tesla Model S, while revolutionary, has exhibited several frequently reported problems. Battery degradation is a significant long-term concern, with owners reporting reduced range over time. The rate of degradation can vary depending on usage and charging habits.

Another common issue involves the door handles, which are known to fail or malfunction. Suspension components, specifically the air suspension, can also experience problems, leading to costly repairs. The large center touchscreen is another point of concern, with reports of delamination, yellowing, and failure. Early models were particularly susceptible to these screen issues.

Recalls for the 2014 Model S have included issues with the seat belts, charging equipment, and potential fire risks. Owners should check the NHTSA website for a complete list of recalls and ensure that all recall-related repairs have been performed.

Long-term reliability concerns also include the drive unit (motor) and the high-voltage battery pack. While Tesla warranties covered many of these components, owners of used models should carefully inspect the vehicle's history and consider a pre-purchase inspection to assess the condition of these critical components. The frequency and cost of repairs can be higher compared to traditional gasoline vehicles.

How long will the 2014 Tesla Model S last?

Based on owner data, a well-maintained 2014 Tesla Model S can potentially last for 200,000 miles or more, spanning 10-15 years of service. However, longevity heavily depends on battery health and maintenance.

Long-term durability weaknesses primarily revolve around battery degradation, which reduces range, and potential failures in the air suspension, door handles, and touchscreen. Consistent adherence to recommended maintenance schedules, including battery care and regular inspections, can mitigate some of these issues and extend the vehicle's lifespan. Climate also affects battery longevity; extreme heat can accelerate degradation.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2014 Tesla Model S features a revolutionary 17-inch touchscreen that controls nearly all vehicle functions.

Tech and Entertainment: The infotainment system includes navigation, internet radio, and web browsing. Over-the-air software updates continuously improved the system. Optional features included an ultra-high fidelity sound system.

Driver-Assistance: The Model S was available with Autopilot, a suite of advanced driver-assistance features including adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, and automatic emergency braking. These features were not as sophisticated as current Autopilot versions, but were groundbreaking at the time.

Safety Features: Standard safety features include antilock brakes, stability control, traction control, front and side airbags, and rear-view camera.

Optional Features: Included parking sensors and blind-spot monitoring.

Crash-Test Ratings: The 2014 Tesla Model S received excellent crash-test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), earning a 5-star overall safety rating. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) also gave the Model S good ratings in various crash tests. However, always refer to the official NHTSA and IIHS websites for the latest and most accurate safety information. The vehicle's strong safety performance contributed significantly to its popularity.

2014 Tesla Model S Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2014 Tesla Model S ranged from approximately $70,000 for the base 60 model to over $100,000 for the P85D with options. Current used market prices vary significantly based on mileage, condition, and battery health. Expect to find them ranging from $25,000 to $45,000.

Depreciation has been significant, particularly for higher-mileage examples. Factors affecting resale value include battery condition (range remaining), accident history, and the presence of desirable options like Autopilot. Lower-mileage examples with well-maintained batteries command higher prices.

2014 Tesla Model S Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2014 Tesla Model S can be higher than average due to its higher repair costs and advanced technology. "Fuel" costs (electricity) are significantly lower than gasoline. Maintenance is generally less frequent than for a gasoline car, but repairs, especially battery-related or for the touchscreen, can be expensive. Long-term ownership costs can be moderate, depending on repair frequency and battery health. Degradation can lead to battery replacement costs, impacting overall economy.

2014 Tesla Model S Insurance

Insurance for a 2014 Tesla Model S is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Hatchback with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2014 Tesla Model S Compare to Other Hatchback?

In 2014, key rivals to the Tesla Model S included the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7 Series, and Audi A8. The Model S excelled in performance (acceleration) and technology, offering a unique all-electric experience. While the German rivals offered superior interior materials and a more established reputation for reliability, the Model S disrupted the market with its innovative features and long-range capabilities.

In terms of price, the Model S was competitive, but its long-term ownership costs (potential battery replacements) were a consideration. The German rivals generally had higher maintenance costs for their gasoline engines but more predictable overall reliability (though this has been debated over time).

Today, if you're considering a used 2014 Model S, alternatives to consider might be newer, similarly priced EVs from other manufacturers, such as a used Chevrolet Bolt (for affordability and shorter commutes) or a newer Tesla Model 3 (for updated technology and potentially better battery health). For luxury and a more traditional driving experience, a used BMW 5 Series or Mercedes-Benz E-Class might be considered, acknowledging the trade-off in fuel efficiency.

Final Verdict: Is the 2014 Tesla Model S a Good Hatchback?

The 2014 Tesla Model S is ideal for tech enthusiasts and environmentally conscious buyers who appreciate its performance and innovative features, but understand older EV limitations. Whether it's worth buying depends heavily on the price and condition. A pre-purchase inspection is essential to assess battery health.

It's best suited for buyers who can charge at home and don't require extremely long-distance travel. The P85D offers the best performance, but may come at a higher price. A well-maintained Model S 85 can be a good compromise between range and cost. Be prepared for potential maintenance costs associated with older EVs.

A great car at a great price!

A one owner, Arizona car with 47,860 original miles. Always serviced at Tesla in Scottsdale. The car is great fun to drive, as it's very quick, handles nicely and it's very dependable. About 160 mile range which is perfect for running around town. The navigation system is the best I've ever seen. Super easy to use and very accurate. Operating cost is very low compared to a car powered by a gas engine. I love the car and we're getting a new one.

Best. Car. Ever.

Even used, the car consistently has 230 range--a little more in the summer, a little less in the winter. But more than enough to meet my needs. I have about an 80-mile round trip commute, so switched to electric to quit buying so much gas. Will never go back to an ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) car! Smooth ride, instant power, massive display that shows everything you need--the only thing I missed were some coat hooks, but those can be purchased aftermarket. It's fun, quiet, doesn't stink like gas, and is just a joy to drive.
