What Problems Does the 2017 Tesla Model S Have?

The 2017 Tesla Model S, while innovative, has had its share of reported problems and recalls. One common issue revolves around the touchscreen, with reports of delamination, yellowing, and eventual failure. This is due to the eMMC (embedded MultiMediaCard) failing. Suspension issues, particularly with the air suspension system, have also been reported, leading to costly repairs. Door handles, especially the automatic extending handles, are another frequently cited problem area, known for malfunctioning in cold weather or due to mechanical failures.

Recalls for the 2017 Model S included issues related to the front suspension, potential seatbelt anchor failures, and problems with the parking brake. Long-term reliability concerns center around battery degradation, which leads to reduced range over time. While Tesla provides battery warranties, significant degradation beyond the warranty threshold can be a major issue. Furthermore, the complex electronics can be prone to failure, and repairs often require specialized Tesla technicians, increasing costs. The MCU (Media Control Unit) failure, causing the touchscreen to malfunction, is a well-documented long-term concern.

How long will the 2017 Tesla Model S last?

The 2017 Tesla Model S, with good maintenance, can reasonably be expected to last for 200,000 miles or 10+ years. However, longevity heavily depends on battery care, charging habits, and climate. Supercharging frequently can accelerate battery degradation. Long-term durability concerns primarily revolve around the battery pack's capacity, electronic component failures (touchscreen, MCU), and suspension issues. Replacement of the battery pack is a significant expense that owners should anticipate. Proper maintenance, including regular software updates and addressing issues promptly, can extend the vehicle's lifespan.

Love it everything we expected the drive and handling is perfect we love how it looks and works. We highly recommend this vehicle wished had purchased sooner.

I initially did not want a Tesla. We purchased the car for our longer commute to save on gas. After my first drive I was hooked. The driving performance and stability is unbelievable. I love that they are always adding software updates. My only negative is that no one will touch the car in regards to getting it repaired. However, also knowing that Tesla is the one fixing the issue gives you the added benefit that it’s done right. Expect things to be a bit expensive because it’s not a cheap vehicle. But it doesn’t drive or perform like a cheap vehicle so it’s worth the cost. I have a very hard time imagining myself driving any other car than a Tesla S.
Life on Mexican border
This car leads to--is-- the future. Absurd to drive a fossil-fueled vehicle spewing noxious deadly fumes. I have solar power totally filling needs of home and electric vehicle, plus electric company sending a check monthly for $250, repaying power put out on grid. I am not a tree hugger, just an 84-year old smart man married to an 89-year old very intelligent lady who picked out this 0-60 3.8s 90D Model S. Life in New Mexico on Mexican border

Fantastic torque and acceleration , ride is too sporty if coming form and expecting Mercedes/Lexus comfort and amenities . Most definitely a car for big deep pockets.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2017 Tesla Model S is packed with technology. The centerpiece is the 17-inch touchscreen, which controls virtually all vehicle functions, including navigation, climate control, and media. Entertainment features include streaming music, internet browsing, and video games (accessible when parked). Driver-assistance features are headlined by Autopilot, which includes adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, and automatic emergency braking. Enhanced Autopilot (optional) added features like automatic lane changes and self-parking.

Safety features include automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, and side collision warning. The Model S also boasts eight airbags. Optional features included premium sound, smart air suspension, and the Premium Upgrades Package (ventilated seats, HEPA air filtration). The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) gave the 2017 Model S a 5-star overall safety rating. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) rated it Good in several crash tests, but it did not receive a Top Safety Pick award. The advanced safety features and strong crash-test performance contribute to a safe driving experience.

2017 Tesla Model S Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2017 Tesla Model S ranged from approximately $70,000 to over $135,000 depending on the trim and options. As of late 2023/early 2024, used prices generally range from $35,000 to $65,000+, influenced by mileage, condition, battery health, and trim level. The Model S has experienced considerable depreciation, especially early on. Factors affecting resale value include battery degradation, the presence of Autopilot or Enhanced Autopilot, and the overall condition of the vehicle. Vehicles with lower mileage and well-maintained batteries command higher prices. The availability of newer Tesla models also impacts the value of older ones.

2017 Tesla Model S Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2017 Tesla Model S tend to be higher than average due to the vehicle's value and repair costs. "Fuel" costs (electricity) are significantly lower than gasoline. Maintenance costs are generally lower compared to gasoline cars, but repairs can be expensive due to specialized parts and labor. Long-term ownership costs can be moderate to high, heavily influenced by potential battery replacement and electronic repairs. It is not an inexpensive vehicle to own long term, though savings on fuel may offset some costs.

2017 Tesla Model S Insurance

Insurance for a 2017 Tesla Model S is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Hatchback Hatchback with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2017 Tesla Model S Compare to Other Hatchback Hatchback?

The 2017 Tesla Model S competes with other luxury sedans like the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7 Series, and Porsche Panamera. In terms of performance, the Model S, especially the P100D, offers quicker acceleration than most rivals. Its technology is also more advanced, particularly with Autopilot. However, reliability is a relative weakness compared to established luxury brands. The Mercedes S-Class offers superior comfort and a more refined interior, while the Porsche Panamera delivers a sportier driving experience.

In terms of price, a used Model S can be competitive, but repairs could be more costly. If reliability is a top priority, the Lexus LS is a strong alternative. If a more engaging driving experience is desired, the Porsche Panamera is a better choice. For ultimate luxury, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class remains a benchmark. While the Tesla offers unique advantages like electric range and Autopilot, its drawbacks need to be considered against the strengths of its competitors. The Audi e-tron GT is also a good all-electric alternative.

Final Verdict: Is the 2017 Tesla Model S a Good Hatchback Hatchback?

The 2017 Tesla Model S is ideal for tech enthusiasts and those seeking a high-performance, all-electric vehicle. It's worth buying used if the price is right and the battery health is good. Pre-purchase inspection by a Tesla specialist is highly recommended. Lower mileage examples are preferable. The 90D or 100D offer better range than the 75D. It is worth considering if you are prepared for potentially higher repair costs and the specific quirks of Tesla ownership. Consider a later model year for potential improvements in build quality and features. If ultimate reliability is paramount, other luxury brands might be a better fit.

2013 Tesla original battery and still going

I have owned 14 cars and this is the best car I have ever owned by far, my commute is 104 miles per day and it's saving me a ton of cash. My Model S P85 is a 2013 on it's original battery. I would not hesitate to buy another one. We are saving up now for my wife's new EV

Best performing car.

Most exciting car since purchasing 1969 Corvette

This car leads to--is-- the future. Absurd to drive a fossil-fueled vehicle spewing noxious deadly fumes. I have solar power totally filling needs of home and electric vehicle, plus electric company sending a check monthly for $250, repaying power put out on grid. I am not a tree hugger, just an 84-year old smart man married to an 89-year old very intelligent lady who picked out this 0-60 3.8s 90D Model S. Life in New Mexico on Mexican border

The best automobile we have owned

Great car. Very fast. Best handling sedan built. Fantastic styling inside and out. Little maintenance required. We fill it up (charge) everytime we go home. Tesla made change of ownership from previous owner a snap.

Car of My Dreams

This car is everything you could every ask for in styling and performance. The amount of technology in this car is unbelievable. The only reason I need to trade it in was I drive a lot and the charge would not last enough for the day. I would have really like to keep this car. As I said this was the car of my dreams.

Car for the rich, expensive to maintain

Fantastic torque and acceleration , ride is too sporty if coming form and expecting Mercedes/Lexus comfort and amenities . Most definitely a car for big deep pockets.
