Rating: 4.46
Based on 100 Owner Reviews
Drew B | March 31, 2025
The 2014 Toyota Prius, part of the third generation (2009-2015), is a hybrid hatchback that revolutionized fuel efficiency. Key trims include the Two, Three, Four, and Five. Its popularity stems from its exceptional gas mileage and reliability. Originally, it cost between $24,000 and $30,000, but used models now vary significantly depending on condition and mileage. The Prius stands out with its dedicated focus on hybrid technology, making it a symbol of eco-conscious driving.
The Good

The 2014 Prius boasts exceptional fuel efficiency, appealing to practical buyers seeking cost savings. Its renowned reliability provides peace of mind. While not sporty, it offers a comfortable ride. The Prius's distinctive design makes a statement about environmental responsibility, resonating with emotionally driven buyers who value sustainability and want to make a statement.

The Bad

Weaknesses of the 2014 Prius include relatively slow acceleration and somewhat uninspired handling. Some owners have reported issues with excessive oil consumption, particularly in later years. Watch out for potential battery degradation due to age, which can significantly impact fuel economy and require costly replacement. The interior materials, while durable, may feel basic to some.

What Problems Does the 2014 Toyota Prius Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2014 Toyota Prius are relatively few compared to some other vehicles, but some common issues do exist. One notable concern is excessive oil consumption, which some owners have reported, particularly as the car ages and accumulates mileage. It's important to regularly check the oil level. Another potential issue is related to the hybrid battery. While generally reliable, the battery's capacity can degrade over time, especially in extreme climates, leading to reduced fuel economy and potentially requiring expensive replacement.

There have been some recalls affecting the 2014 Prius, including issues related to the fuel system and airbags. It's crucial to check the vehicle's VIN on the NHTSA website to determine if any recalls apply and ensure they have been addressed by a Toyota dealer. Long-term reliability is generally considered excellent for the Prius, but preventative maintenance, like timely oil changes and hybrid system checks, is essential to maximizing its lifespan. Some owners also reported minor issues with the infotainment system and interior trim pieces. Overall, the 2014 Prius is a reliable car, but paying attention to these potential issues can help avoid costly repairs down the road.

How long will the 2014 Toyota Prius last?

With proper maintenance, a 2014 Toyota Prius can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report exceeding 250,000 miles with the original hybrid battery, though some degradation in capacity is expected after 10 years.

Long-term durability is a strong point, but weaknesses can emerge over time. Battery health is a primary concern, affecting fuel economy and potentially leading to replacement costs. Regular oil changes (synthetic oil is recommended) are vital to prevent or mitigate oil consumption issues. Suspension components and brake actuators may also require attention as the car ages. Consistent maintenance is key to maximizing the Prius's longevity.

Vehicle does everything very well. And it is not as slow as people say it is. It has great acceleration from a light blowing away most of their cars. If you’re in to that.

Amazing upgrades. From the solar sunroof which powers the a/c on hot Oklahoma days to the heated seats when driving in freezing temperatures, this car delivers. Toyota is one of the most innovative car companies and it really is on display in this model. It took me several months to find this particular car and I’m glad I had the patience to wait until the perfect car for me was available.
Love my Prius
Car has plenty of room, rides smooth, with the power button has no problem in the Rocky Mountains. Easy to park when in the city. Quiet engine, all around good car.

This was my rental car for a weekend. Let me first say, that it took me a good 30 minutes to figure out the controls of this car. Toyota could have made the controls to the standard of most all others, but they went over the top trying to impress someone. So far that they alienated everyone. The gear shift is NOT A GEARSHIFT at all. It's a joy-stick. Oh.. and try to find PARK. You can't.. it's not there. The steering wheel is thin and tiny giving this car a feel like your child's play toy. The interior was confining. In an effort to make this car look like the starship Enterprise, they placed a big piece of plastic between the driver and the passenger. This serves no other purpose but for looks. but it really makes you feel confined. The acceleration was slow as expected,, but even more then what I had imagined before I got in. I was glad to turn this car in,, and I'll never rent one again.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2014 Toyota Prius offers a respectable array of built-in tech features for its time. The base 'Two' trim includes standard features like keyless entry, automatic climate control, a CD player, and Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free calling and audio streaming. Higher trims, like the 'Three' and 'Four', add Toyota's Entune infotainment system with navigation and smartphone app integration. The 'Five' trim offers even more advanced features, such as LED headlights.

Driver-assistance features were available as options, including adaptive cruise control and lane departure warning. These features enhance safety by helping the driver maintain a safe following distance and stay within lane markings. The Prius comes standard with a suite of safety features, including anti-lock brakes, stability control, traction control, and multiple airbags.

Crash-test ratings are generally excellent. The 2014 Prius earned a five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) also gave it a "Top Safety Pick" designation. This reflects the Prius's strong performance in crash tests and its availability of advanced safety technologies. The available rearview camera also enhances safety during reversing maneuvers.

2014 Toyota Prius Insurance

Insurance for a 2014 Toyota Prius is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2014 Toyota Prius Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2014 Toyota Prius competes with other hybrid and fuel-efficient vehicles such as the Ford C-Max Hybrid, Honda Insight, and Nissan Leaf (electric). In terms of fuel economy, the Prius consistently outperforms the C-Max Hybrid. The Honda Insight, while also a hybrid, doesn't offer the same level of cargo space or the Prius's established reputation for reliability. The Nissan Leaf, being fully electric, provides zero-emission driving but has a limited range compared to the Prius's gas-electric hybrid system.

While the Prius isn't known for its sporty performance, its reliability is a significant advantage over the Ford C-Max Hybrid, which has had some reported reliability issues. In terms of features, the Prius offers a comparable set of technology and comfort options. If fuel economy is the top priority, the Prius remains a strong contender. However, if someone prefers a more engaging driving experience, the Ford C-Max might be considered. For those seeking a pure electric vehicle, the Nissan Leaf could be an alternative, though range anxiety might be a concern. Overall, the Prius provides a balanced combination of fuel efficiency, reliability, and practicality, making it a solid choice in its class. A similarly reliable and economical alternative could be the Toyota Camry Hybrid, offering a more traditional sedan experience.

Final Verdict: Is the 2014 Toyota Prius a Good Sedan?

The 2014 Toyota Prius is an ideal choice for individuals and families prioritizing fuel efficiency, reliability, and practicality. It's particularly well-suited for commuters and those who drive frequently in urban environments. Whether it's worth buying depends on individual needs and budget. A used 2014 Prius can be a great value, provided it has been well-maintained and the hybrid battery is in good condition. Opting for a higher trim like the 'Three' or 'Four' adds desirable features like navigation and an upgraded infotainment system. However, the base 'Two' trim still offers essential features. Before purchasing, a thorough inspection by a qualified mechanic is recommended, especially focusing on the hybrid battery's health and any potential oil consumption issues.

the apex.

The one weak point is that there is a design defect. The exhaust manifold leading to cylinders tends to get clogged up. Must be cleaned every 60 k miles (200 dollar job) to avoid head gasket replacement. Otherwise should run forever. 250 k miles and doesn't use drop of oil. 2014 is known to be vintage year, with all kinks worked out of generation 3 - except for aforementioned. Besides being ultra reliable, the car is simply the best use of space and readily available fuel possible. Enormous cargo space with back seats down. Up, passengers have room almost equivalent to full-size sedan. Simply best car ever made. Just look out for traction battery expense. But even that can be mitigated using rebuilt batteries and independent shops.

We ve Shipped it to Hawaii and back,& driven coast to coast last year And our mpg is currently 41.5. As high as 50.0 on the trip. Economical, clean, dependable

This car met all of our needs. Comfortable. Plenty of legroom. Rear seats fold down flat to give plenty of cargo space. Love that it has a CD player; most cars today don't!

Most fuel efficient car ever.

Bought it used with 17K miles from original owner. Showroom condition. Just a really cool car to own and drive. $20 fills it up the tank and you get almost 500 miles out of it.
