The 2004 Toyota Prius, a pioneering hybrid, helped popularize the technology. It's a four-door hatchback. The second generation Prius ran from 2004-2009. Trims were largely option-based, with packages adding features. When new, pricing ranged from approximately $20,000-$24,000. Its fuel efficiency and advanced technology for the time made it a standout choice for environmentally conscious buyers.
The Good

The 2004 Prius boasts exceptional fuel efficiency, appealing to practical buyers seeking savings. Its hybrid technology offered a "green" image, satisfying emotional buyers. Reliability is generally high, leading to lower long-term costs. The hatchback design offers good cargo space and the ride is reasonably comfortable.

The Bad

The 2004 Prius isn't known for thrilling performance. Battery degradation is a concern in older models, potentially requiring expensive replacement. The regenerative braking system can feel unusual at first. Some owners report issues with the Multi-Information Display (MID) failing over time.

What Problems Does the 2004 Toyota Prius Have?

The 2004 Toyota Prius, while generally reliable, has some frequently reported problems. The most significant concern is hybrid battery degradation. Over time, the battery's capacity diminishes, leading to reduced fuel economy and eventual replacement, a costly repair.

The Multi-Information Display (MID) is another common failure point, often displaying blank or garbled information. Repairing or replacing the MID can be expensive. Some owners have reported issues with the combination meter (instrument cluster).

Other reported problems include inverter failure (though less common than battery issues) and occasional brake actuator problems. Check engine lights related to the hybrid system are not uncommon and require diagnosis. Regular maintenance, particularly keeping the cooling system in good condition, is crucial for long-term hybrid system health.

While recalls were issued for certain Prius models, it's important to check the vehicle's VIN with the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) to determine if any recalls apply to a specific 2004 Prius. Overall, addressing these issues promptly and performing preventative maintenance are vital for maximizing the Prius's lifespan.

How long will the 2004 Toyota Prius last?

With good maintenance, a 2004 Toyota Prius can easily surpass 200,000 miles or 20 years of service. Many owners report reaching 250,000-300,000 miles. Key to longevity is consistent oil changes, timely hybrid battery maintenance (or replacement when necessary), and addressing any warning lights promptly.

The main long-term weakness is the hybrid battery pack, which will eventually degrade and require replacement. Rust can also become a factor in regions with harsh winters. Regularly checking and maintaining the cooling system is crucial to prevent hybrid system overheating and potential failures.

Negative Owner Reviews
Mike315
Its a great vehicle but the seats are way to hard and barely any adjustments. Long drives would make my legs numb. Got average 42-44mpg sometimes 50 on highway and in winter low of 35mpg. Would of kept it longer if it was more comfortable.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2004 Toyota Prius offered relatively advanced technology for its time. Standard features included automatic climate control, a CD player, and keyless entry. The Multi-Information Display (MID) provided real-time fuel economy and hybrid system information.

Optional features included a navigation system (a rarity then), a JBL premium sound system, and leather seats. Some models were equipped with Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), enhancing safety. The Smart Key system, allowing keyless entry and start, was also a popular option.

Regarding safety, standard features included front airbags and anti-lock brakes (ABS). Optional side curtain airbags were available.

Crash test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) were generally good for the 2004 Prius. While specific ratings should be verified with those organizations directly, it performed well in frontal and side impact tests for its class. The inclusion of VSC as an option also contributed to improved handling and accident avoidance.

2004 Toyota Prius Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2004 Toyota Prius had an MSRP ranging from approximately $20,000 to $24,000, depending on options. Currently, used market prices vary greatly depending on condition, mileage, and location, but typically range from $2,000 to $7,000.

The Prius has depreciated significantly over time, which is typical for vehicles of this age. Factors affecting resale value include the condition of the hybrid battery, overall mechanical condition, mileage, and cosmetic appearance. A well-maintained Prius with a relatively new hybrid battery will command a higher price.

2004 Toyota Prius Cost of Ownership

The 2004 Toyota Prius is generally economical to own, primarily due to its excellent fuel economy. Insurance costs are typically moderate. Routine maintenance is relatively affordable, but hybrid battery replacement can be a significant expense. Repair costs can be higher than average if hybrid-specific components fail. Overall, long-term ownership costs depend heavily on the condition of the hybrid battery and the owner's maintenance habits. Regular maintenance will help to minimize repair costs and extend the life of the vehicle.

2004 Toyota Prius Insurance

Insurance for a 2004 Toyota Prius is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2004 Toyota Prius Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2004 Toyota Prius competed primarily with other compact cars and early hybrid models. Compared to traditional compacts like the Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic, the Prius offered significantly better fuel economy but sacrificed some driving performance. In terms of features, the Prius was generally well-equipped, especially with optional packages.

Reliability is a mixed bag. While the Prius is known for overall reliability, the hybrid system introduces potential failure points absent in traditional gasoline cars. Alternatives to the 2004 Prius included the Honda Civic Hybrid, which offered similar fuel economy but a more conventional driving experience. The Ford Escape Hybrid was a larger, SUV-style hybrid option.

If fuel economy is the top priority, the 2004 Prius is a decent choice, *assuming* the hybrid battery is in good condition. However, potential buyers should carefully inspect the battery and consider its remaining lifespan. If performance is more important, a standard gasoline compact car might be a better option. Newer hybrid models offer improved performance and technology but at a higher price point. Given the age of the vehicle, thoroughly assess its condition before purchasing.

Final Verdict: Is the 2004 Toyota Prius a Good Sedan?

The 2004 Toyota Prius is ideal for budget-conscious buyers prioritizing fuel economy and willing to accept slower acceleration. It's worth buying *if* the hybrid battery is in good condition or has been recently replaced, and if a thorough inspection reveals no major mechanical issues. Avoid models with high mileage and unclear maintenance history. A pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic specializing in hybrids is highly recommended. While new isn't an option, look for a well-maintained example with documented service records. Don't overpay, considering potential future battery replacement costs. If the battery is nearing the end of its life or already degraded, it's likely not worth the investment.

For Jobu Sixpack, the best car ever made?

Perfect in so many ways. Sips gas, obviously. Virtually repair-free — 16 years running! Revitalized hybrid battery at 185,000 miles, not for the $4,400 the dealer quoted, but for $800 from private firm (Falcon Hybrid in Hawthorne, NJ).

The best car I have ever owned

I have owned VWs, Volvo’s, and Toyota’s. The 2004 Prius is the last car I bought I loved it from the beginning and continue to love it. Whether commuting or driving long distances it has been very reliable and comfortable and I understand they have continued to get better. If I was not retired I’d buy a new one.

Most Reliable Car I Have Ever Owned

I love my Prius!!! The only issues I have had with it are the multifunction display occasionally stops working and the auto locks on the front doors don’t work to lock the car. I have to manually lock and unlock the front passenger door. But these issues pale in comparison with its reliability. I have owned my car since 2015 and it has never broken down or needed any major repair. For a car this old, that is REMARKABLE!!! And the gas mileage is EXCELLENT!

Very reliable and inexpensive to drive

I loved my Prius. It was reliable, great gas mileage, and I loved the keyless start. It does ride low to the ground (can bottom out if you?re not careful).
