The 2021 Toyota Prius, a pioneer in hybrid technology since its initial launch, continues its legacy as a fuel-efficient hatchback. Offered in a single body style, the Prius boasts a lineup of trims including L Eco, LE, XLE, and Limited. Its popularity stems from its exceptional fuel economy and reliability, making it a practical choice for eco-conscious drivers. New pricing ranged from approximately $24,000 to $33,000.
The Good

The 2021 Toyota Prius boasts exceptional fuel efficiency and renowned Toyota reliability, appealing to practical buyers. Its comfortable ride and spacious interior make it suitable for daily commuting. While not a performance vehicle, it offers adequate power for city driving. The hybrid drivetrain provides a sense of environmental responsibility, attracting emotionally driven buyers seeking a "green" vehicle.

The Bad

The 2021 Toyota Prius isn't known for thrilling performance or sporty handling. Some drivers find the exterior design polarizing. The continuously variable transmission (CVT) can create a droning sound under hard acceleration. Watch out for potential battery degradation over time, especially with high mileage. The infotainment system can feel dated compared to competitors.

What Problems Does the 2021 Toyota Prius Have?

The 2021 Toyota Prius generally enjoys strong reliability ratings. However, some owners have reported issues with the infotainment system, including glitches and slow response times. While the hybrid battery is designed to last, degradation over time can occur, especially with high mileage or extreme temperatures. Battery replacement can be a significant expense. Other less frequent complaints include issues with the 12V auxiliary battery and occasional sensor malfunctions related to the safety systems. Recalls for the 2021 model year are relatively rare, and it is always best to check the NHTSA website for the most up-to-date recall information. Long-term reliability concerns mainly revolve around the hybrid battery's lifespan and the potential for increased repair costs as the vehicle ages. While the Prius is known for its durability, preventative maintenance and regular servicing are crucial to minimizing potential problems and maximizing its lifespan. Ensuring proper cooling system maintenance is also important for battery health. Some owners have also reported issues with excessive oil consumption, though this is not widespread for the 2021 model year.

How long will the 2021 Toyota Prius last?

With proper maintenance, a 2021 Toyota Prius can easily exceed 200,000 miles and provide 10-15 years of service. Many owners report reaching 300,000 miles with minimal major repairs. Key to longevity is adherence to the recommended maintenance schedule, including timely oil changes, fluid checks, and hybrid system inspections. The hybrid battery is a crucial component, and its lifespan is affected by driving habits and climate. Extreme heat can accelerate battery degradation. Weaknesses over time might include increased engine wear, suspension component wear, and potential issues with electronic components, but the Prius is generally considered a durable and long-lasting vehicle.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2021 Toyota Prius comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, a suite of driver-assistance features including pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with steering assist, automatic high beams, full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control, and road sign assist. Standard tech includes a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Amazon Alexa compatibility. Higher trims offer an 11.6-inch touchscreen, a JBL premium audio system, and a color head-up display. Available safety features include blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and parking assist. Optional features include SofTex upholstery, heated front seats, and wireless charging.
Crash-test ratings are generally excellent. The NHTSA awarded the 2021 Prius a 5-star overall safety rating. The IIHS gave it a "Top Safety Pick" award. The Prius prioritizes safety with its comprehensive suite of features designed to prevent accidents and protect occupants in the event of a collision. The adaptive front lighting system available on higher trims enhances visibility during nighttime driving. The larger touchscreen infotainment system offers improved usability and a more modern feel compared to the base system.

Current used market prices range from approximately $18,000 to $28,000, depending on trim level, mileage, and condition. The Prius holds its value relatively well due to its reputation for reliability and fuel efficiency. Lower mileage examples and those with complete maintenance records command higher prices. Color can also impact resale value, with more neutral colors like white, silver, and black generally being more desirable. Demand for fuel-efficient vehicles also influences the price.

2021 Toyota Prius Cost of Ownership

The 2021 Toyota Prius is generally economical to own. Insurance costs are typically lower than average due to its safety ratings and lower repair costs. Fuel costs are exceptionally low thanks to its outstanding fuel efficiency. Maintenance is generally routine and affordable. 2021 Toyota Prius Insurance

Insurance for a 2021 Toyota Prius is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Passenger Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2021 Toyota Prius Compare to Other Passenger Sedan?

Key rivals to the 2021 Toyota Prius include the Hyundai Ioniq, Kia Niro, and Honda Insight. In terms of fuel efficiency, the Prius remains a top contender, often surpassing its competitors. The Hyundai Ioniq offers similar fuel economy at a slightly lower price point, while the Kia Niro provides a more SUV-like design. The Honda Insight boasts a more conventional sedan appearance but may not achieve the same level of fuel efficiency as the Prius.
The Prius excels in reliability, a long-standing Toyota strength. While the Ioniq and Niro offer compelling warranties, the Prius's reputation for durability is a significant advantage. Performance-wise, none of these vehicles are particularly sporty. The Insight offers slightly better handling. Feature-wise, they are all fairly competitive, with comparable infotainment and safety technology available. If fuel efficiency is the top priority, the Prius remains a strong choice. For those seeking a more engaging driving experience, the Honda Insight might be a better alternative. The Hyundai Ioniq or Kia Niro could be considered if budget is a primary concern or if a slightly different body style is preferred. Ultimately, the best choice depends on individual needs and preferences.

The 2021 Toyota Prius is an excellent choice for eco-conscious drivers who prioritize fuel efficiency, reliability, and practicality. It's ideal for commuters and those seeking a dependable vehicle with low running costs. Whether it's worth buying depends on individual needs and budget. A used 2021 Prius can offer excellent value, especially if well-maintained and with reasonable mileage. Consider higher trims like the XLE or Limited for added comfort and features. However, even the base L Eco provides impressive fuel economy. If performance is a key concern, other alternatives might be more suitable. Overall, the 2021 Prius remains a compelling choice in the hybrid segment, especially for those seeking a proven and dependable vehicle.

I have a 2021 Prius AWD with 233,000 km.

I have a 2021 Prius AWD with 233,000 km. Not one issue. Starts even at -40 degrees and everything works as it should. No rattles or lose pieces. Just a solid car. I have driven through muddy roads and a foot of snow and the front air dam xxxxxxsnow and keeps going. Who needs an SUV when you’re driving one of these.

It’s a great car ! Great ride , gas mileage

It’s a great car that has some Power for a little hybrid . The only thing I think can be changed is the charging station on the console needs a better way of keeping the phone charging.

Responsive, Reliable and Remarkable PrissyAnn

Yes, I named my Prius PrissyAnn. I had wanted to look into a hybrid vehicle, so stopped at my local Toyota dealer & told the salesman if I was going to buy one, I needed leather/vinyl heated seats & more cargo space than my 2017 Buick Encore, & yet wanted a car that would go interstate speeds & still save me $$ in gas. I test-drove a silver Prius (not my favorite color for a car) but really liked it & bought it. We've taken numerous trips through mountains, back roads & interstates. It doesn't hesitate when getting on the interstate or if I need to get around a truck. It handles remarkably well on dry, wet, & icy roads & is comfortable for my 6-foot husband (my usual passenger) & most of all - I love that I average 55 mpg. I love the technology, I connect my Android & listen to Youtube videos, podcasts, music, Alexa, voice controls for phone calls, & connect to WAZE GPS. I love the cruise control that I can adjust to maintain distance behind the vehicle in front of me. And the lane stability, speed alarms that I can set, and the cameras all around, keep my attention, especially on interstates. Anyway, I've owned it for less than 18 months and have over 33,000 miles on it & it's as good as the first miles I put on it. I really like this car & should have bought one sooner.

FT driver saving 160/week on gas.

62 miles per gallon. I drive 1000 miles/week. Went from 230/wk in gas to 70$. Much smaller compared to the C-HR i traded in (27 mpg), so not as comfortable for me, but the $ I’m saving on gas more than pays for the monthly payment on the Prius (C-HR was paid off prior to trade-in). 2021 is much less boxy from the back than previous models, and I do like that. The split glass hatch back took about 3 days to get used to, and there is a roll down cover for the cargo area. Love the blindspot sensors on side mirrors, the rear camera, but I hate the radar sensors that without warning slow down the car when using cruise control, but I’m getting used to it and can react before the sudden braking. Overall grade: solid A

62 miles per gallon whooooeeee!

Just bought the new 2021 Prius Limited. This car comes with everything. I wanted the electric storm blue with white and black interior as all black is too hot. Air conditioning in 95 degree weather is just Ok, not freezing cold. In the winter I love the heated seats and heated steering wheel. And the best part is getting 62 miles per gallon. I drive some on the highway but mostly drive in the suburbs, running errands.. I bought this Prius because I love its shape. It looks like a sports car even though it is a hatchback.

Love my new car

This car is the best. Love the mpg. Use less gas then most of the car I own. Find it easier to drive small cars than big cars now. Love all the safety options.

dependable and comfortable

I do like the car and it is very comfortable. But, it has a bit of a learning curve. I had a 2012 Prius and it was a very dependable car that didn't have that much of a learning curve. This 2021 is a techy's dream. Unfortunately, I'm still learning how to use it. To say it's frustrating is the understatement of the year.

my first hybrid

So far this car is surpassing my expectations. I've only owned it for 2 days (less than 100 miles) but it is responsive, reasonably intuitive tech, comfortable, and will help save the planet.

Love the technology & 54+ MPG!

I recently replaced a 2008 Prius Touring model with 164,000 miles. The 2021 Prius LE's Dynamic Cruise control, with steering and parking assist, is amazing. It's great to have both Apple Car Play & Android Auto. The only thing I miss about 2008 was all of the extra storage areas. Including 6-handy cup holders, secret drawer, 2-glove boxes & storage under the back deck. I feel like I'm set for 10 + years to wonder what the 2031 model will be like ;-)? I recently drove over 125 miles on the highway at 74 mph and averaged 61.3. MPG by drafting behind a semi using dynamic cruise control!

MPG , AWD , Easy to stain Seats, No Spare Wheel

I really enjoy this car. My only dislikes are the materials used on the interior are easy to stain and difficult to clean. I like the Apple Car Play.
