Rating: 4.33
Based on 52 Owner Reviews
Jovan | March 31, 2025
The 2009 Toyota Yaris is a subcompact car known for its fuel efficiency and affordability. Part of the second generation (2006-2011), it was available as a hatchback (3-door or 5-door) and a sedan. Key trims included the base model and the S trim, offering slightly sportier features. Its popularity stemmed from its reliability, ease of parking, and low running costs. Pricing typically ranged from $12,000 to $16,000 new.
The Good

The 2009 Yaris excels in reliability and fuel efficiency, appealing to practical buyers. Its nimble handling makes city driving enjoyable, catering to emotional needs. It offers good value for money and is known for its longevity. While not luxurious, it provides adequate comfort for daily commutes.

The Bad

Weaknesses of the 2009 Yaris include its basic interior materials and limited sound insulation, leading to a noisy cabin. The engine can feel underpowered, especially when fully loaded or on hills. Rust can be an issue in regions with road salt. Check for proper maintenance history.

What Problems Does the 2009 Toyota Yaris Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2009 Toyota Yaris are generally minor. One common issue is related to the oxygen sensor, which can trigger the check engine light. Some owners have reported issues with the air conditioning system, such as weak cooling or compressor failure, though this is less prevalent. Rust can be a concern, especially in areas where road salt is used during winter. It's important to inspect the undercarriage and body panels for signs of corrosion. Some owners have also reported issues with the manual transmission, such as difficulty shifting or premature clutch wear, though this is relatively rare.

Regarding recalls, it's essential to check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website with the VIN of the specific vehicle to see if it has any outstanding recalls. While the 2009 Yaris is generally considered reliable, addressing any recalls promptly is crucial for safety. Long-term reliability is generally good, but regular maintenance is key to preventing major issues. Check the service history for oil changes, fluid flushes, and other routine maintenance. Ignoring maintenance can lead to premature wear and tear on components like the engine, transmission, and suspension.

How long will the 2009 Toyota Yaris last?

With proper maintenance, a 2009 Toyota Yaris can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report exceeding this milestone. Average mileage can vary greatly depending on usage patterns and maintenance habits. A well-maintained Yaris can provide 15+ years of service. Long-term durability is a strong point, but weaknesses can emerge in areas like suspension components (struts, shocks) and rubber seals, which may require replacement over time. Regular oil changes, timely fluid flushes, and addressing minor issues promptly are crucial for maximizing longevity.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2009 Toyota Yaris offered fairly basic tech and entertainment features for its time. Standard features included a CD player with AM/FM radio and an auxiliary audio input. There was no built-in navigation system or advanced infotainment screen. Driver-assistance features were also minimal; power windows and locks were optional, primarily found on the "S" trim.

Safety features included standard anti-lock brakes (ABS), front airbags, and side-impact airbags. Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) was available as an option on some models. Crash test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) generally show good performance for frontal and side impacts. However, it's important to note that safety standards have evolved significantly since 2009, and newer vehicles generally offer more advanced safety technologies. While the Yaris provided adequate safety for its era, it lacks modern features like blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, and automatic emergency braking. The lack of advanced tech reflects the car's focus on affordability and simplicity.

2009 Toyota Yaris Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2009 Toyota Yaris had an MSRP ranging from approximately $12,000 to $16,000, depending on the trim level and options. Current used market prices typically range from $4,000 to $8,000, but can vary based on mileage, condition, and location. The Yaris depreciated considerably over time, but its reputation for reliability helps it retain some value compared to other subcompact cars. Factors affecting resale value include the car's overall condition, mileage, maintenance history, and whether it has a clean title. Demand for fuel-efficient vehicles can also influence the price.

2009 Toyota Yaris Cost of Ownership

The 2009 Toyota Yaris is exceptionally economical to own. Insurance costs are typically low due to its safety record and modest value. Excellent fuel economy significantly reduces running costs. Maintenance is relatively inexpensive, with readily available and affordable parts. Repairs are generally infrequent and not overly costly. Long-term ownership costs are among the lowest in its class, making it an excellent choice for budget-conscious buyers.

2009 Toyota Yaris Insurance

Insurance for a 2009 Toyota Yaris is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2009 Toyota Yaris Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2009 Toyota Yaris competed with vehicles like the Honda Fit, Nissan Versa, and Hyundai Accent. The Yaris excelled in reliability and fuel economy, often surpassing its rivals. The Honda Fit offered more versatility with its "magic seat" and greater cargo space, while the Nissan Versa provided a roomier interior, particularly in the rear. The Hyundai Accent was typically priced lower but might not have matched the Yaris's long-term reliability.

In terms of performance, the Yaris was adequate for city driving but lagged behind the Fit in terms of acceleration. Features were generally basic across the segment, with the Yaris being on par with its competitors. If cargo space and versatility are priorities, the Honda Fit is a better choice. If interior room is paramount, the Nissan Versa is worth considering. However, for overall reliability and fuel efficiency at an affordable price point, the Toyota Yaris remains a strong contender. Depending on the buyer's priorities, each of these alternatives presents a compelling option. Another alternative might be the Scion xD (also a Toyota product) which offered similar reliability with slightly different styling.

Final Verdict: Is the 2009 Toyota Yaris a Good Sedan?

The 2009 Toyota Yaris is ideal for budget-conscious individuals seeking reliable and fuel-efficient transportation, particularly for city driving. It's a good option for first-time car buyers, students, or anyone prioritizing low running costs. It's generally worth buying used, especially if well-maintained and with a comprehensive service history. The "S" trim offers some desirable upgrades like power windows and alloy wheels, but the base model is perfectly adequate for basic transportation needs. Ensure a thorough inspection for rust and mechanical issues before purchasing. If you value a roomy interior or sporty performance, explore alternatives. However, for dependable, economical motoring, the Yaris is a solid choice.

I'm the 2nd owner of a 4-door Yaris sedan w/manual

I'm the 2nd owner of a 4-door Yaris sedan w/manual transmission. I've owned it 7 years & it currently has 121K miles. Nothing has gone wrong mechanically outside of two serpentine drive belts & a new clutch. My preventative maintenance has consisted of new tires, synthetic oil changes (Amsoil oil), one major tune-up @ 100K miles w/manual transmission oil change, and recent freon. My air conditioning + heat both work great. The trunk is huge for storage. The ONLY minor annoyances are the sloping front seats & dashboard because things serm to slip off. Several mechanics have told me that this car has a problem-free 1NZ-FE engine which can easily last 300,000 - 400,000 miles with proper care. Is this car fast & zippy like a Mazda? (Um, no...) But is it reliable, practical, made in Japan, with good mileage? (Yes..!) The 2009 Yaris is also rated "AWESOME" on car complaints dot com 😀

Excellent Reliable Car

I bought my 2009 Toyota Yaris brand new. I still drive it today. Out of all the years I've owned it there haven't been any major problems to fix. It has almost 350,000 miles on it. This car is paid for itself many times over. The gas savings are excellent as well.

Best used car on planet

I've owned small cars since I was 20 yrs old. This is, by far, the most reliable car I've ever had. 35-40 mpg for a 2009 4dr yaris. The car runs great and looks better. Wish I could buy this exact same car today.

This car will never die

Reliable reliable reliable! Love Toyota! I’ve seen similar Yaris’s with 400-500 k miles on them, this is why Toyotas hold their value! Great car! Love it!

Very reliable for the money.

Very reliable and fun to drive. Very responsive in busy traffic. Roomier for front passages than it looks from outside. Pretty versatile on moving persons and merchandise from A to B. Not the best on highway but not bad either. Good mileage (up to 45 MPG) and cheap maintenance. Sub-average on snow. Overall I'm very happy with it.

Very cost savings car to own

Yaris has been one of my favorite subcompact cars to own. I owned one for almost a year and 3 months and savings on gas was unbelievable. It looks small but it is pretty well designed to maximize interior room space. The seats were comfortable even for long drives. It is pretty powerful and fast too . Never paid a penny besides gas on the car for the 15 months of ownership, even though it was a used car. Did not even lose money on it when I resold it. Only issue I had was that in windy days and if driving over 70 mph, you can feel the car almost like taking off as a Cessna 150 would do. But that is manageable, plus how many days are you going to drive over speed limit in bad weather?

Everything you need and nothing you don't

I purposely sought out a three door Liftback with a manual transmission. Very easy to get into and out of, nice high seating position, great visibility. very straightforward mechanically and a breeze to service if you are a reasonably competent home mechanic. I'm going to drive mine until the wheels fall off.

Fantastic little car

It?s very reliable and mpg is amazing. The car is smooth on the road, but seats get uncomfortable on long drives. The money you save makes it worth the pain.
