The Good
The 2009 Yaris excels in reliability and fuel efficiency, appealing to practical buyers. Its nimble handling makes city driving enjoyable, catering to emotional needs. It offers good value for money and is known for its longevity. While not luxurious, it provides adequate comfort for daily commutes.
The Bad
Weaknesses of the 2009 Yaris include its basic interior materials and limited sound insulation, leading to a noisy cabin. The engine can feel underpowered, especially when fully loaded or on hills. Rust can be an issue in regions with road salt. Check for proper maintenance history.

What Problems Does the 2009 Toyota Yaris Have?
Regarding recalls, it's essential to check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website with the VIN of the specific vehicle to see if it has any outstanding recalls. While the 2009 Yaris is generally considered reliable, addressing any recalls promptly is crucial for safety. Long-term reliability is generally good, but regular maintenance is key to preventing major issues. Check the service history for oil changes, fluid flushes, and other routine maintenance. Ignoring maintenance can lead to premature wear and tear on components like the engine, transmission, and suspension.
How long will the 2009 Toyota Yaris last?
What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Safety features included standard anti-lock brakes (ABS), front airbags, and side-impact airbags. Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) was available as an option on some models. Crash test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) generally show good performance for frontal and side impacts. However, it's important to note that safety standards have evolved significantly since 2009, and newer vehicles generally offer more advanced safety technologies. While the Yaris provided adequate safety for its era, it lacks modern features like blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, and automatic emergency braking. The lack of advanced tech reflects the car's focus on affordability and simplicity.

How Does the 2009 Toyota Yaris Compare to Other Sedan?
In terms of performance, the Yaris was adequate for city driving but lagged behind the Fit in terms of acceleration. Features were generally basic across the segment, with the Yaris being on par with its competitors. If cargo space and versatility are priorities, the Honda Fit is a better choice. If interior room is paramount, the Nissan Versa is worth considering. However, for overall reliability and fuel efficiency at an affordable price point, the Toyota Yaris remains a strong contender. Depending on the buyer's priorities, each of these alternatives presents a compelling option. Another alternative might be the Scion xD (also a Toyota product) which offered similar reliability with slightly different styling.

Final Verdict: Is the 2009 Toyota Yaris a Good Sedan?
My Two Cents on September 23, 2024
I'm the 2nd owner of a 4-door Yaris sedan w/manualI'm the 2nd owner of a 4-door Yaris sedan w/manual transmission. I've owned it 7 years & it currently has 121K miles. Nothing has gone wrong mechanically outside of two serpentine drive belts & a new clutch. My preventative maintenance has consisted of new tires, synthetic oil changes (Amsoil oil), one major tune-up @ 100K miles w/manual transmission oil change, and recent freon. My air conditioning + heat both work great. The trunk is huge for storage. The ONLY minor annoyances are the sloping front seats & dashboard because things serm to slip off. Several mechanics have told me that this car has a problem-free 1NZ-FE engine which can easily last 300,000 - 400,000 miles with proper care. Is this car fast & zippy like a Mazda? (Um, no...) But is it reliable, practical, made in Japan, with good mileage? (Yes..!) The 2009 Yaris is also rated "AWESOME" on car complaints dot com 😀

Excellent Reliable CarI bought my 2009 Toyota Yaris brand new. I still drive it today. Out of all the years I've owned it there haven't been any major problems to fix. It has almost 350,000 miles on it. This car is paid for itself many times over. The gas savings are excellent as well.

Best used car on planetI've owned small cars since I was 20 yrs old. This is, by far, the most reliable car I've ever had. 35-40 mpg for a 2009 4dr yaris. The car runs great and looks better. Wish I could buy this exact same car today.

DEPENDABLE and FRUGALExcellent all around especially with fuel headed TOWARD 4 DOLLARS A GALLON. Air blows cold. auxillary port, cd player. I can ride if it becomes $5 a gallon at 40 mpg. I get 440 miles to the tank

Very reliable for the money.Very reliable and fun to drive. Very responsive in busy traffic. Roomier for front passages than it looks from outside. Pretty versatile on moving persons and merchandise from A to B. Not the best on highway but not bad either. Good mileage (up to 45 MPG) and cheap maintenance. Sub-average on snow. Overall I'm very happy with it.

Very cost savings car to ownYaris has been one of my favorite subcompact cars to own. I owned one for almost a year and 3 months and savings on gas was unbelievable. It looks small but it is pretty well designed to maximize interior room space. The seats were comfortable even for long drives. It is pretty powerful and fast too . Never paid a penny besides gas on the car for the 15 months of ownership, even though it was a used car. Did not even lose money on it when I resold it. Only issue I had was that in windy days and if driving over 70 mph, you can feel the car almost like taking off as a Cessna 150 would do. But that is manageable, plus how many days are you going to drive over speed limit in bad weather?

Everything you need and nothing you don'tI purposely sought out a three door Liftback with a manual transmission. Very easy to get into and out of, nice high seating position, great visibility. very straightforward mechanically and a breeze to service if you are a reasonably competent home mechanic. I'm going to drive mine until the wheels fall off.

Fantastic little carIt?s very reliable and mpg is amazing. The car is smooth on the road, but seats get uncomfortable on long drives. The money you save makes it worth the pain.
