The 2018 Toyota Yaris is a subcompact car known for its affordability and fuel efficiency. Available as a hatchback (3-door or 5-door) and sedan (Yaris iA), it debuted in 2006. Key trims for 2018 included L, LE, and SE. The Yaris stands out for its reliability, ease of parking, and user-friendly features. Pricing typically ranged from $16,000 to $19,000 when new. Its small size makes it ideal for city driving and budget-conscious buyers.
The Good

The 2018 Toyota Yaris boasts exceptional reliability and fuel efficiency, making it a practical choice. Its compact size allows for easy maneuverability, appealing to those seeking stress-free city driving. While not a performance car, its simple design and reputation for dependability offer peace of mind and a sense of value, attracting emotionally-driven buyers seeking a trustworthy and affordable vehicle.

The Bad

The 2018 Toyota Yaris's weaknesses include its limited rear passenger space and modest engine power. The interior materials can feel basic. Infotainment can seem dated for those used to modern systems. Watch out for potential issues with the automatic transmission in higher mileage examples, and ensure regular maintenance has been performed.

What Problems Does the 2018 Toyota Yaris Have?

The 2018 Toyota Yaris generally enjoys strong reliability, but some frequently reported problems and potential concerns exist. Some owners have reported minor issues with the infotainment system, such as Bluetooth connectivity glitches or unresponsive touchscreens. Others have noted that the air conditioning system can be somewhat weak in hotter climates.

Recalls for the 2018 Yaris are relatively infrequent, but it is always advisable to check the NHTSA website for any open recalls related to your specific vehicle's VIN. Long-term reliability is generally excellent, thanks to Toyota's reputation for building dependable cars. However, as with any vehicle, regular maintenance is crucial to prevent problems. Listen for any unusual noises from the engine or transmission, and address them promptly.

Specifically, with the automatic transmission, ensure fluid changes are performed as per the manufacturer's recommendations. Some drivers have commented on the somewhat sluggish acceleration, particularly when fully loaded with passengers or cargo, but this is a characteristic of the vehicle's small engine and not necessarily a reliability concern. Overall, the 2018 Yaris is considered a reliable vehicle, but performing regular maintenance and addressing any issues promptly will help ensure long-term dependability.

How long will the 2018 Toyota Yaris last?

With good maintenance, a 2018 Toyota Yaris can easily exceed 200,000 miles or 15+ years of service. Toyota's reputation for reliability shines through, especially with regular oil changes, fluid checks, and timely replacement of wear items like brakes and tires. Long-term durability is a strong suit, though suspension components and the air conditioning system may require attention over time. The engine and transmission are typically robust, contributing to the Yaris's longevity. Neglecting maintenance, however, drastically shortens its lifespan.

CUT gearbox strains at speeds over 100 kms. Needs more space to turn than bigger cars. Think design fault in steering. Interior seems cheap. 2011 model was better

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2018 Toyota Yaris offers a reasonable array of built-in tech and safety features for its class. The standard infotainment system includes a 6.1-inch touchscreen (7-inch on the Yaris iA sedan), Bluetooth connectivity for phone calls and audio streaming, and a USB port. Entertainment options are basic, focusing on radio and media playback.

Driver-assistance features are limited in the base models but include a rearview camera. The Yaris iA (sedan) offers a low-speed pre-collision system as standard. No advanced features like blind-spot monitoring or lane departure warning are available. Safety features include standard airbags, anti-lock brakes (ABS), and stability control.

Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) should be checked for the specific model year and body style (hatchback vs. sedan). The Yaris typically performs well in crash tests for its size, but results can vary. Optional features are scarce, mainly consisting of dealer-installed accessories rather than factory options. Overall, the Yaris prioritizes basic safety and connectivity over cutting-edge technology.

2018 Toyota Yaris Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2018 Toyota Yaris had an MSRP ranging from approximately $16,000 to $19,000, depending on the trim level and body style. As of today, used market prices typically range from $9,000 to $15,000, varying based on mileage, condition, and location. The Yaris depreciates at a slower rate than many other vehicles due to Toyota's reputation for reliability. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, accident history, maintenance records, and overall condition. Lower mileage and a clean title will command higher prices.

2018 Toyota Yaris Cost of Ownership

The 2018 Toyota Yaris is exceptionally economical to own. Insurance costs are typically low due to the vehicle's safety record and affordable value. Fuel costs are minimal, thanks to its excellent fuel economy. Maintenance is generally inexpensive, with readily available parts and simple mechanicals. Repairs are infrequent and relatively affordable. Long-term ownership costs are among the lowest in its class, making it an excellent choice for budget-conscious buyers.

How Does the 2018 Toyota Yaris Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2018 Toyota Yaris competes with vehicles like the Honda Fit, Nissan Versa, Kia Rio, and Hyundai Accent. In terms of performance, the Yaris lags behind the Honda Fit, which offers more spirited acceleration and better handling. Feature-wise, rivals like the Kia Rio and Hyundai Accent often provide more modern infotainment systems and available driver-assistance technologies.

However, the Yaris excels in reliability, often surpassing its competitors in long-term dependability. Price-wise, the Yaris is generally competitive, but the Nissan Versa can sometimes be found at a lower price point. The Honda Fit offers superior cargo space and versatility, making it a better option for those who prioritize practicality. The Kia Rio and Hyundai Accent provide a more stylish design and longer warranty coverage, appealing to buyers seeking modern features and peace of mind.

A similar alternative would be the Mazda 3 (depending on budget), which offers a more engaging driving experience, or the Scion iA (which became the Yaris iA) as it is essentially the same vehicle. If reliability is paramount, the Yaris is a strong contender, but if other factors like performance or features are more important, exploring alternatives is advisable.

Final Verdict: Is the 2018 Toyota Yaris a Good Sedan?

The 2018 Toyota Yaris is ideal for budget-conscious buyers seeking a reliable and fuel-efficient subcompact car for city driving. It's worth buying, particularly as a used vehicle, due to its strong depreciation curve and proven reliability. The LE trim offers a good balance of features and value. Avoid expecting sporty performance or luxurious amenities. If reliability and low running costs are your top priorities, the Yaris is an excellent choice. However, if you need more space, power, or advanced technology, consider alternatives like the Honda Fit or Hyundai Accent.

Handles well!

Although it’s a small car, this 2018, Toyota Yaris provides ample room in the driver seat- the most important seat in the car! Love it!!!!!

Perfect size on Indian Road on February 9, 2021

Most suitable size for Indian Road

I made a lot of research on the size, fuel economy and luxury of a car which would like to own. It met most of my expectation except gives an average 10 in city and 14 KM/L on highway with A/C running. Bumper supports are bit delicate and get damaged easily. Looks perfect size for Indian Road.

Good little car

This is my second yaris, upgraded from my old '07 to a 3 year lease of the 2018 model. Ending my lease now with 60K km on it. Generally very reliable, the only repair I've had other than scheduled maintenance was brake pad replacements at around 50K and a wheel alignment after going over a pothole. The nice thing about having a small entry level car is that even the big repairs are pretty cheap. Safety and convenience features are nice (I have the LE trim), performance is totally adequate for A-B driving but don't expect to be blown away - acceleration is noticeably sluggish when you're carrying 3 passengers. Tank is pretty small so I had to fill up more often than I would like when I was commuting but the actual fuel economy is pretty great, as long as you drive sensibly. I live in Ontario so we get pretty bad winters, I put snow tires on every year and never had any issues with winter performance. Even though it is a small car there is a surprising amount of space, you'll get just as much stuff in there with the back seats down as you would in a sedan, if not more. If you're on a budget and not looking for anything flashy, the Yaris is an awesome little car for reliability and affordability.

$430 ignition key No Bad Backs

Most or all the new cars have new dealer income. $400 to $500 keyless ignition FOB with door key inside. They claim for your protection but its income for the dealer. The drivers seat will give you a back ache if you have any back problems. Unless the front seats are pushed forward, for a short person, an adult will be VERY cramped in the back seat.
