The 2014 Toyota Yaris is a subcompact hatchback, known for its reliability and fuel efficiency. Part of the Yaris's second generation in North America, it's available in 3-door and 5-door configurations. Key trims include the L, LE, and SE. The pricing range when new started around $15,000. Its popularity stems from its practicality, ease of parking, and Toyota's reputation for dependability.
The Good

The 2014 Toyota Yaris excels in reliability and fuel efficiency, appealing to practical buyers. It's easy to maneuver in urban environments. While not a performance car, its dependability provides peace of mind, which can resonate emotionally with buyers seeking a hassle-free ownership experience. It's a great value for budget-conscious individuals.

The Bad

The 2014 Yaris's weaknesses include a somewhat underpowered engine, limited rear passenger space, and basic interior materials. The handling, while adequate, isn't sporty. Watch out for potential issues with the air conditioning system and check for any signs of excessive wear, especially in high-mileage examples. The automatic transmission can sometimes feel sluggish.

What Problems Does the 2014 Toyota Yaris Have?

The 2014 Toyota Yaris is generally considered a reliable vehicle, but some frequently reported problems include issues with the air conditioning system (compressor failure or weak cooling), particularly in warmer climates. Some owners have reported minor electrical glitches, such as issues with the power windows or door locks. Premature brake wear has also been noted by some owners, especially in city driving. There were some recalls issued for the 2014 Yaris, including potential issues with the fuel system and airbags. Check the NHTSA website using the VIN for the specific vehicle in question to see if all recalls have been addressed. Long-term reliability concerns are minimal, but regular maintenance, including oil changes and fluid checks, is crucial for extending the life of the engine and transmission. Suspension components, like struts and shocks, may require replacement after several years or high mileage. While the Yaris is durable, neglecting scheduled maintenance can lead to more significant problems down the road. Overall, the 2014 Yaris is a dependable choice if properly maintained.

How long will the 2014 Toyota Yaris last?

With consistent maintenance, a 2014 Toyota Yaris can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report 10-15 years of reliable service. Long-term durability is a strong point, but neglecting regular maintenance (oil changes, fluid checks, and timely repairs) will shorten its lifespan. Weaknesses over time can include wear on suspension components, potential for rust in regions with harsh winters, and the gradual decline of interior plastics. However, these are typical for a vehicle of its age and class.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2014 Toyota Yaris offers relatively basic built-in tech. The standard entertainment system includes an AM/FM radio, CD player, and auxiliary audio input. Higher trims might have included Bluetooth connectivity for phone calls, but streaming audio was not always standard. Driver-assistance features were minimal; it did not offer advanced systems like automatic emergency braking or lane departure warning.
Safety features include standard anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic stability control, traction control, and multiple airbags (front, side, and curtain airbags). A rearview camera was not typically standard on all trims for this model year.
Optional features were limited, primarily consisting of upgraded audio systems or appearance packages.
Crash test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) should be checked for specific results. Generally, the Yaris performed adequately in crash tests, providing decent protection for occupants in frontal and side impacts, but results vary so specific model year information should be consulted. The NHTSA overall safety rating was typically 4 out of 5 stars.

2014 Toyota Yaris Prices and Market Value

The 2014 Toyota Yaris had a starting MSRP of around $15,000 to $17,000 when new, depending on the trim level. Current used market prices typically range from $7,000 to $12,000, depending on mileage, condition, and location. The Yaris depreciates relatively slowly due to its strong reputation for reliability and fuel efficiency. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, overall condition, service history, and the presence of desirable features like Bluetooth or a well-maintained exterior. Lower mileage examples in excellent condition command higher prices.

2014 Toyota Yaris Cost of Ownership

The 2014 Toyota Yaris is generally very economical to own. Insurance costs are typically low due to its safety record and value. Fuel costs are excellent, thanks to its high fuel economy. Maintenance costs are also low, as the Yaris is known for its reliability and requires minimal repairs. When repairs are needed they are generally inexpensive. Long-term ownership costs are among the lowest in its class, making it a budget-friendly choice.

2014 Toyota Yaris Insurance

Insurance for a 2014 Toyota Yaris is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Hatchback with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2014 Toyota Yaris Compare to Other Hatchback?

The 2014 Toyota Yaris competes with vehicles like the Honda Fit, Nissan Versa, Ford Fiesta (though reliability became a concern for later Fiesta models), and Hyundai Accent. In terms of performance, the Yaris is less engaging than the Honda Fit, which offers a more powerful engine and better handling. The Nissan Versa offers more interior space, but its driving experience is less refined.
When it comes to features, the Yaris is generally basic compared to the Fit or Accent, which often offer more advanced tech features even in base trims. However, the Yaris shines in reliability, often surpassing the Ford Fiesta and rivaling the Honda Fit.
In terms of price, the Yaris is competitive, often undercutting the Fit slightly.
A better alternative, if performance and features are a priority, would be the Honda Fit. A similar alternative, if space is paramount, is the Nissan Versa. If reliability and low cost are the primary concerns, the Yaris is a strong contender, though a well-maintained Hyundai Accent might also be considered.

Final Verdict: Is the 2014 Toyota Yaris a Good Hatchback?

The 2014 Toyota Yaris is ideal for budget-conscious buyers, city dwellers, and those prioritizing reliability and fuel efficiency over performance or advanced features. It's a worthwhile purchase, particularly as a used vehicle, given its depreciation and long lifespan. The LE trim offers a good balance of features and value, while the SE trim might appeal to those seeking a slightly sportier driving experience. Avoid examples with significant accident history or neglected maintenance. If you value driving dynamics and cargo space, consider alternatives like the Honda Fit, but if dependable, affordable transportation is your goal, the Yaris is an excellent choice.

Excellent little car.

We previously owned a Cadillac, so there was quite a difference in size and fuel consumption. We use it as a motorized shopping cart, and for what we need, it performs well. Only observation against it is the instrument panel. Very hard to see, without the lights on. Overall a great little car.

I've had 3 Yaris' and I have loved them all

I had a 2008 Yaris, 2011 Yaris and just recently the 2014 Yaris. I love this car so much. Super responsive handling, tight turning radius, touchy brakes and accelerator (which I like), zippy! Has protected me in what could've been a horrific car accident in which the car was severely totaled. Zero maintenance, reliable... never had to take them in to a mechanic for anything other than maintenance.

Yaris SE rear disk brakes unreliable

The Yaris SE has rear disk brakes instead of drums like other Yaris models. The rear disk brake callipers are prone to seizing, resulting in destruction of pads and rear rotors. In the last two years, these repairs have cost $2300 CDN. This points to a very expensive flaw in the car’s design. So although the rest of the car is quite reliable, the rear disk brakes are not. If you are buying a Yaris, skip the SE model

Easy on my wallet, Swift ride, Best deal of 2019!

My vehicle is comfortable enough to sleep in. All car applications made easily visible for me to get to know my car well, and fast. Any adjustments, changes, or refills are brightly shown on dash a ways before empty. I’ve molded to a swift sleek ride, feeling sleek & Swift myself!

Great Fun car

Love the feel of the drive of the Yaris hatchback. It maneuvers around traffic so easily. It holds the road and I feel very in control when I drive it. I'm a little surprised that it doesn't get as good of gas mileage as my 2014 Corolla, but still averages about 30 miles/gallon. Very happy with the purchase.

GREAT FIRST OR BACKUP CAR!

The car has nothing and can be considered small for some people - however, it is an excellent first car for your teenager or a backup car for a professional - it is definitely very reliable and quite easy to park in tight spaces
