The 2019 BMW M5 is a high-performance sedan, continuing the legacy of the M5 which began in the mid-1980s. It's a four-door sedan offering exhilarating performance. The 2019 model is part of the sixth generation (F90). Key trims include the base M5 and the Competition model. The original MSRP ranged from around $103,500 to $110,000+. It stands out for its blend of supercar-level performance and everyday usability, making it a popular choice for enthusiasts wanting both luxury and power.
The Good

The 2019 BMW M5 boasts blistering performance, offering incredible acceleration and handling. Its luxurious interior ensures comfort for daily driving. While not the most fuel-efficient, its design is both aggressive and elegant. For practical buyers, it's a usable sedan. Emotionally, it delivers an exhilarating driving experience and a sense of prestige, making it a desirable performance vehicle.

The Bad

The 2019 BMW M5's complexity can lead to potential maintenance issues, making it costly to repair. Fuel economy is also a weakness, especially during spirited driving. Some owners have reported issues with the infotainment system. The initial high price point means significant depreciation, which may concern some buyers. Watch for oil leaks and ensure regular maintenance is performed by qualified technicians.

What Problems Does the 2019 BMW M5 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2019 BMW M5 include issues related to the electronic systems and drivetrain. Some owners have reported glitches with the iDrive infotainment system, including screen freezing, software errors, and connectivity problems. Others have noted potential oil leaks, particularly around the valve cover gaskets and oil pan. It is crucial to inspect the car thoroughly for any signs of oil leaks prior to purchasing.
There have been recalls affecting the 2019 M5, primarily related to fuel pump issues (potentially leading to stalling) and potential wiring harness problems that could increase the risk of a fire. It's essential to check the vehicle's VIN against the NHTSA database to ensure all recall repairs have been performed.
Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the complexity of the twin-turbo V8 engine and the advanced electronics. The M5 requires meticulous maintenance, including frequent oil changes and inspections, to prevent costly repairs down the line. The active suspension components are also prone to wear and tear, and replacing them can be expensive. Some owners have reported issues with the differential.
While the engine is robust, proper maintenance is critical. Regular servicing is necessary to ensure long-term reliability. Ignoring scheduled maintenance can lead to significant problems that are costly to rectify.

How long will the 2019 BMW M5 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2019 BMW M5 can reasonably achieve 150,000 - 200,000 miles or 10-15 years of service. The engine itself is generally durable, but adhering to a strict maintenance schedule is crucial. Regular oil changes, inspections, and timely replacements of wear items are necessary to achieve optimal longevity. Long-term weaknesses often manifest as electronic issues, wear on suspension components, and potential oil leaks. High performance driving will decrease the car's lifespan. Cars that have been meticulously maintained tend to hold their value better and last longer.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2019 BMW M5 comes standard with a host of advanced technology, entertainment, driver-assistance, and safety features. The iDrive 7.0 infotainment system with a 10.25-inch touchscreen display is standard, featuring navigation, Apple CarPlay compatibility, and voice control. A Harman Kardon sound system provides excellent audio quality.
Standard driver-assistance features include lane departure warning, frontal collision warning with automatic emergency braking, and park distance control. Optional features include adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, and a 360-degree camera system.
Safety features include multiple airbags, stability control, traction control, and anti-lock brakes. Optional features include night vision with pedestrian detection.
The M5 has not been specifically crash-tested by NHTSA or IIHS, but the BMW 5 Series (on which the M5 is based) typically receives good safety ratings. The 2019 BMW 5 series earned β€œGood” ratings in several IIHS crash tests, which suggests a high degree of safety.
Optional tech upgrades include a Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System, which delivers exceptional audio fidelity, and a head-up display that projects important information onto the windshield. Parking Assistant Plus allows the car to park itself in both parallel and perpendicular spaces.

2019 BMW M5 Prices and Market Value

The 2019 BMW M5 had a starting MSRP of approximately $103,500, with the Competition model starting around $110,000. Current used market prices typically range from $55,000 to $75,000+, depending on mileage, condition, and options. Depreciation is significant in the first few years. Lower mileage, a clean Carfax report, and desirable options (like the Bowers & Wilkins sound system or driver assistance packages) positively impact resale value. A well-documented service history is also crucial for maintaining a higher resale price.

2019 BMW M5 Cost of Ownership

The 2019 BMW M5 is a costly vehicle to own long-term. Insurance premiums are high due to its performance capabilities and value. Fuel costs are significant, especially with spirited driving. Maintenance and repairs can be expensive, particularly for specialized components. BMW maintenance plans can help offset some of these costs, but unexpected repairs can still strain the budget. Long-term ownership requires a dedicated financial commitment to keep the M5 in top condition. Proper maintenance is not optional, but essential.

2019 BMW M5 Insurance

Insurance for a 2019 BMW M5 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2019 BMW M5 Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2019 BMW M5 competes with other high-performance sedans like the Mercedes-AMG E63 S, Audi RS7, and Porsche Panamera. The M5 offers a balanced blend of performance and everyday usability. The AMG E63 S provides similar performance with a slightly more aggressive exhaust note, but reliability is similar. The Audi RS7 boasts distinctive styling and all-wheel-drive grip, but the M5 is more engaging to drive.
The Porsche Panamera offers superior handling and a more luxurious interior but comes at a higher price point. In terms of features, the M5 is well-equipped, but the others offer similar levels of technology and customization. Reliability is a mixed bag across the board, with all models requiring diligent maintenance.
Alternatives to the M5 include the Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing (for raw power and driver engagement, though less refined) and the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio (for stunning design and performance, but lower reliability ratings). The choice depends on priorities: the M5 is a strong all-rounder, while others excel in specific areas. The M5 offers the best balance of performance and daily usability compared to its rivals.

Final Verdict: Is the 2019 BMW M5 a Good Sedan?

The 2019 BMW M5 is ideal for enthusiasts seeking a high-performance sedan that blends exhilarating speed with luxurious comfort and everyday practicality. It's worth buying if you appreciate its driving dynamics and can afford the associated ownership costs. Buying used offers a significant price advantage, but prioritize examples with complete service records and pre-purchase inspections. The Competition model is desirable for its increased power and sharper handling, but the standard M5 is already incredibly capable. Ensure all recall work has been done. If maintained well, it is a very compelling choice for anyone seeking a true sports sedan.

Best Car I have owned!

This car is incredible. It is so fast right front the factory and has so much luxury and comfort I am blown away. I have owned over 20 cars and this is by far the best one. Every time I slide into the driver seat and cruise around it brings nothing but smiles to my face.

I am a converted Porsche owner.

I have owned 10 different 911's. I found the M5 was faster, had much more room for people and stuff, and unlike Porsche provides a ton of standard features. Porsche charges for every option, and many should in my opinion be standard at this price point. Driving the M5 is a thrill every single day. It is my absolute favorite car of all time.

M5: Best high Performance Sedan

Replaced my 911 with a Panamera 4 and then with this M5 Competition for my 2 growing kids. There's a world on difference between Panamera 4 and the M5. This is a supercar disguised like a 5 series. Draws less attention and a pure driver's car.

Great Car with Embarrassing Brake Squeal

The brake squeal everyday is ridiculous on the M5 The dealer three times and every other dealer on the internet said it’s normal for an M car. For $110k, the brakes shouldn’t sound like they came off of a 1980s minivan. Other than that most painful daily experience, the rest of the car and performance is solid. The 19Ò€ wheels looking way better in person than in pictures on the BMW site. Power is exhilarating, surprisingly good fuel economy. About 22 MPG.

High performance super sedan

Amazing mix of super performance, high technology, and luxury amenities. Has 617 BHP, all-wheel drive, dynamic driving modes, and massaging seats! The only change I would make is for rear-wheel steering (counter steering at low speeds) to shorten the turning radius.
