The 2014 BMW M5 is a high-performance, four-door sedan representing the fifth generation (F10) of the M5 lineage. Produced from 2011-2016, the F10 M5 offered a blend of luxury and track-ready performance. Key trims centered around available packages and options.
New, it ranged approximately from $90,000 to $110,000+ depending on configuration. Its popularity stems from its potent twin-turbo V8 engine, sophisticated technology, and the ability to effortlessly transition from comfortable daily driver to exhilarating sports sedan.
The Good

The 2014 M5 boasts blistering performance from its twin-turbo V8, delivering an engaging driving experience. It offers surprising comfort and luxury for daily use, with a stylish and aggressive design. While not its strong suit, efficiency is acceptable for its class. The value lies in its blend of performance and practicality, appealing to both thrill-seekers and those needing a refined sedan.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2014 M5 include potential oil consumption issues, and the sophisticated electronics can be prone to failure.
The twin-turbo V8, while powerful, can require expensive maintenance. Carbon buildup on the intake valves is a common concern. High repair costs are typical for a performance vehicle of this caliber, especially out of warranty.

Recalls for the 2014 M5 have addressed issues like potential fuel leaks and problems with the fuel pump. Long-term reliability hinges on diligent maintenance.
Neglecting scheduled servicing, especially oil changes and spark plug replacements, can exacerbate these issues. Suspension components may also require attention over time, particularly if the vehicle is driven aggressively. While not specific to the 2014 model year, these are recurring themes within the F10 M5 generation.

How Does the 2014 BMW M5 Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2014 BMW M5 competed against rivals like the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG, Audi RS7, and Cadillac CTS-V. In terms of performance, the M5 offered similar levels of power and acceleration to its competitors.
Features were generally comparable, with each offering a range of luxury and technology options. Reliability is where the M5 potentially lagged slightly behind some rivals, particularly the E63 AMG. Price-wise, the M5 was competitive within its class.
The E63 AMG offered a similar blend of performance and luxury with arguably better reliability. The Audi RS7 provided a more stylish and comfortable alternative, while the Cadillac CTS-V presented a more aggressive and American-focused option. If reliability is a primary concern, the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG might be a better alternative. However, the M5's engaging driving dynamics and overall refinement make it a compelling choice within its segment.

Buying used is generally recommended due to significant depreciation. Look for well-maintained examples with complete service records. The Competition Package offers a slight performance edge, but the standard model is still exceptionally capable. Ensure a pre-purchase inspection by a qualified BMW mechanic to identify any potential issues before committing to the purchase. It's a rewarding vehicle for those who prioritize driving experience, but requires careful consideration of ownership costs.

BMW M5 - the best of both worlds!

Owned a 2009 BMW M3 Coupe for 5 years and loved every day. Was a hard recession parting with it and even harder finding a vehicle that would bring such fun and excitement to everyday driving. Looked at the new M3/4, the Jaguar F Type R, Mercedes SL550 and even Porsche. Finally settled on the M5 because it had equal to greater performance to the M3 but with vastly more comfort and usability ( at least to me). The M3 is great for twisty roads and quick acceleration between two points, but the M5 just eats long distances with comfort and style! It has huge power when needed and it's so effortless you have to keep an eye open to stay within the speed limits. Driving the M5 is fun and exciting, the electronic features make day to day living with car a pleasure. It's bigger than the M3/4, smaller than an M6 - with more inside room than both for 4-5 passengers, and Theron lies the driver behind the decision. If you want power, style , features and space for more than 2 people, you won't be unhappy with an M5.

2014 M5

Just recently traded in my v10 M5 for the new twin turbo v8. The car has huge power and the new transmission is the best in the biz.. The new one is leaps ahead of the previous model in almost every way. The one area that seems to be a trend with BMW and all others is weight gain. The car is a few hundred pounds heavier than my previous model. You feel it, even with the increased power. You feel it in the handling. Overall great car. Keep the M badge true BMW!
