The 2015 BMW M5 is a high-performance sedan, tracing its lineage back to the original M5 that redefined the sports sedan segment. This model year is part of the F10 generation (2011-2016). It's offered exclusively as a four-door sedan. Key trims include the standard M5 and models with the Competition Package. New pricing ranged from around $94,000. It's popular for its blend of blistering performance, luxurious comfort, and everyday usability.
The Good

The 2015 BMW M5 boasts exhilarating performance, a comfortable and luxurious interior, and a sleek, executive design. For the emotional buyer, there's the thrill of the powerful engine and precise handling. Practical buyers appreciate its usability as a daily driver and its relative reliability compared to some competitors. While not the most efficient, its fuel economy is reasonable for its performance class.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2015 BMW M5 include potential oil consumption issues, especially in earlier F10 models. Carbon fiber roof delamination has also been reported, although less common. Ensure the car has a complete service history, paying close attention to oil changes and any reported drivetrain issues. The complex electronics can also be a source of problems.

What Problems Does the 2015 BMW M5 Have?

The 2015 BMW M5, like many high-performance vehicles, has some frequently reported problems and potential long-term reliability concerns.

Common issues include:
  • Oil Consumption: The S63 engine is known to consume oil. Regular monitoring and topping off are crucial. Some owners have reported excessive oil consumption, potentially indicating more serious issues.
  • VANOS System: The variable valve timing system (VANOS) can experience problems, leading to performance issues and potentially requiring expensive repairs.
  • Fuel Injectors: Some owners have reported fuel injector failures, resulting in rough running and misfires.
  • Electronics: The complex electronics system can be prone to glitches and failures, including issues with the iDrive system, sensors, and control modules.
  • Carbon Fiber Roof: Though not extremely common, delamination of the carbon fiber roof has been reported.
Recalls are less frequent but should be checked through the NHTSA website using the VIN of the specific vehicle. Long-term reliability can be affected by these issues if not addressed promptly and properly. Preventative maintenance, including regular oil changes with high-quality synthetic oil, is crucial for mitigating these risks. Earlier model years in the F10 generation (2012-2013) seemed to experience more issues initially, but the 2015 model year benefits from some improvements and refinements.

How long will the 2015 BMW M5 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2015 BMW M5 can easily provide 150,000 miles or more of service. Many owners report reaching this milestone and beyond with regular maintenance, including oil changes, fluid checks, and timely repairs. However, the long-term durability hinges heavily on adherence to a strict maintenance schedule. Neglecting maintenance, especially oil changes and addressing minor issues promptly, can significantly shorten its lifespan. The engine's complexity and the intricate electronic systems represent potential weaknesses over time if not properly cared for. Expect increased maintenance and repair costs as the car ages.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2015 BMW M5 came equipped with a range of impressive tech, entertainment, driver-assistance, and safety features:

Built-in Tech and Entertainment: The standard iDrive infotainment system with a 10.2-inch display is central to the experience, providing navigation, audio controls, and vehicle settings. A premium Harman Kardon sound system delivered excellent audio quality. Bluetooth connectivity, USB ports, and smartphone integration were standard.

Driver-Assistance Features: Standard features included park distance control, a rearview camera, and adaptive headlights. Optional driver-assistance features included lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and a head-up display that projected important information onto the windshield.

Safety Features: Standard safety equipment included antilock brakes, stability control, traction control, front airbags, side airbags, and side curtain airbags.

Optional Features: The Executive Package added features like ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a power rear sunshade, and soft-close doors.

Crash-Test Ratings: The 2015 BMW 5 Series (which the M5 is based on) received good crash-test ratings from both the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). While the M5 was not specifically tested, it shares the same underlying structure and safety features as the 5 Series.

2015 BMW M5 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2015 BMW M5 had a starting price around $94,000. Current used market prices vary significantly based on mileage, condition, and options, generally ranging from $30,000 to $50,000. Depreciation is substantial, as is typical for luxury performance vehicles. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition (accident-free history is crucial), service records (a well-documented service history boosts value), and options (the Competition Package and Executive Package are desirable). Lower mileage examples in excellent condition command the highest prices.

2015 BMW M5 Cost of Ownership

The 2015 BMW M5 is a costly vehicle to own long-term. Insurance premiums are high due to its performance capabilities and value. Fuel costs are considerable, especially with spirited driving. Maintenance, including oil changes and routine services, is more expensive than average. Repairs can be particularly costly, especially for engine, transmission, or electronics-related issues. Be prepared for significant ongoing expenses. This is not an economical vehicle.

Final Verdict: Is the 2015 BMW M5 a Good Sedan?

The 2015 BMW M5 is ideal for enthusiasts who desire a blend of thrilling performance, luxurious comfort, and everyday usability. It's worth buying if you appreciate its driving dynamics and are prepared for potentially high running costs. Buying used is the only option, and it's crucial to find a well-maintained example with a complete service history. The Competition Package enhances the driving experience, but isn't essential. Thoroughly inspect the car before purchase, and consider a pre-purchase inspection by a qualified BMW mechanic.

F10 M5 Competition Package Black On Black

Great sleeper car aka king of highway! It's a quiet beast! Smooth, luxury, comfortable ride with the needed power when in demand. Black On Black makes heads turn and is quite noticeable in a positive way but also OG style. It’s the ultimate driving machine and not many problems as some people make it seem BMWs to have. I would say BMWs are hit or miss and F10 M5 competition are pretty reliable. Just like any other car, take care of it and it will not disappoint you.
