Analysis
What Problems Does the 2009 BMW M5 Have?
Other frequently reported issues include oil leaks, particularly from the valve cover gaskets and oil filter housing. Electrical problems, such as sensor failures and iDrive malfunctions, are also relatively common. The adaptive suspension (EDC) can also experience issues over time, leading to costly repairs.
While recalls were issued for certain issues in the E60 generation, it's important to check the specific VIN of any potential purchase to ensure all applicable recalls have been addressed.
Long-term reliability is a concern due to the complexity of the vehicle and the high performance demands placed on its components. Proper maintenance and proactive repairs are essential to mitigate these risks, but even with meticulous care, the 2009 BMW M5 can be an expensive car to maintain in the long run.
How long will the 2009 BMW M5 last?
Long-term durability is impacted by the aforementioned rod bearing issue, SMG transmission, and EDC suspension. Regular oil changes with the correct oil, proactive maintenance on the SMG transmission, and addressing suspension issues promptly are crucial. The engine's high-revving nature can also contribute to wear and tear over time, affecting longevity.

It's advisable to check specific ratings for the 2009 model year for the most accurate information.

2009 BMW M5 Prices and Market Value
The M5 has experienced significant depreciation due to its age, maintenance costs, and potential reliability concerns. How Does the 2009 BMW M5 Compare to Other Sedan?
In terms of features, the M5 was well-equipped but not significantly ahead of its competitors. Reliability is where the M5 lags behind; the E63 AMG and RS6 (depending on the year) tend to be more reliable, although they too have their issues.
Regarding price, the M5's used market value reflects its higher maintenance costs and potential reliability concerns. Alternatives to consider include the later-model BMW M5 (F10 generation) with its turbocharged engine, which offers similar performance with improved efficiency and potentially better reliability. The Cadillac CTS-V from the same era is another strong contender, offering comparable performance at a lower price point, but with a different driving experience. For those prioritizing reliability over the unique V10 experience, the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG is a strong alternative.

Final Verdict: Is the 2009 BMW M5 a Good Sedan?
Buying used is the only option, and a pre-purchase inspection by a qualified BMW mechanic is essential. Prioritize examples with comprehensive service records, especially those documenting rod bearing replacement and SMG transmission maintenance. If reliability and running costs are major concerns, exploring alternatives like the E63 AMG or a later-model M5 might be a wiser choice. Owning an E60 M5 is a labor of love, not a practical decision.

Take care of this car and it will take care of youenough with the talk about reliability issues. the 2009 build year has been a consistent and reliable performance sedan- the V10 engine is one of the most beatiful and linear driving experiences you can find in a sports sedan. handling is great for a 4 door mid size sedan. Has been a daily driver for the better part of 3 years and continues to be a joy to drive. keep up with the regular maintenance and this car will continue to impress

Great Engine Needs Better TransmissionThe vehicle is equipped with an amazing high revving V10 motor with 507 hp; however, the transmission on this vehicle is not reliable. The SMG has numerous issues that make this car a money pit. Low-speed driving is horrible, but on the freeway, once you stretch the car the transmission works amazing. BMW will never make an M car as amazing as this S85 V10 engine.

Most fun I?ve ever had owning a carWhen I first purchased my e60 Bmw m5 I didn?t think I would like it as much as I did. I originally just got it for the engine. The leather seats were the most comfortable seats I?ve ever owned in a car and plus they are adaptive so it moves with the car. Just make sure to set money aside because repairs are very expensive.
