The 2010 BMW M5 is a high-performance sedan that's part of the E60 generation (2005-2010). It's known for its naturally aspirated V10 engine and exceptional handling. It only comes in one body style: a four-door sedan. There aren't really distinct trims, but options packages varied. When new, it cost around $85,000 - $90,000. Today, used prices vary widely based on condition and mileage. Its unique engine and driver-focused experience made it a hit.
The Good

The 2010 M5 excels in performance, offering thrilling acceleration and precise handling. Its luxurious interior provides comfort. The design is classic BMW. For the emotional buyer, the V10 engine sound is intoxicating. For the practical buyer, it's a spacious sedan with a respectable amount of usable technology, although the reliability can be spotty, and it can be a good value on the used market.

The Bad

The 2010 BMW M5's V10 engine can be expensive to maintain. Watch out for SMG transmission issues, throttle actuators failing, and oil leaks. High-pressure VANOS system problems are also common. Suspension components may require replacement due to wear and tear. Electrical gremlins can also appear, making thorough inspection important before buying.

What Problems Does the 2010 BMW M5 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2010 BMW M5 center around its complex V10 engine and SMG transmission. The throttle actuators are notorious for failing, leading to expensive repairs. The VANOS (Variable Valve Timing) system is another common source of trouble, potentially causing reduced performance or engine failure. Oil leaks are also a frequent complaint, particularly around the valve covers and oil cooler lines.
The SMG transmission, while offering fast shifts, can suffer from hydraulic pump failures and clutch wear. Regular SMG service is crucial but costly.
Other reported issues include:
  • Power steering pump failures
  • Alternator failures
  • Battery drain issues
  • Navigation system malfunctions
  • Idrive controller issues
While there may have been minor recalls for various E60 models regarding safety equipment like airbags or fuel lines, recalls specifically targeting the M5's engine or drivetrain were less frequent. Long-term reliability is a major concern due to the car's complexity and age. Proper maintenance is critical to mitigating these potential problems, but even well-maintained examples can experience costly repairs. Preventive maintenance, such as replacing wear items before they fail, is highly recommended.

How long will the 2010 BMW M5 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2010 BMW M5 can reach 200,000 miles or more. However, achieving this requires diligent care and preventative maintenance. Many examples are now showing their age, with an average mileage between 80,000 and 150,000 miles. Long-term durability hinges on addressing known weaknesses, such as the throttle actuators, VANOS system, and SMG transmission. Neglecting these areas can lead to catastrophic failures. Suspension components, bushings, and other wear items will likely need replacement over time. The aluminum chassis can also suffer corrosion in colder climates. Overall, it’s a car that rewards careful owners but penalizes neglect.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2010 BMW M5 featured a competitive set of technologies for its time. Built-in tech and entertainment: included BMW's iDrive system for controlling navigation, audio, and vehicle settings. It had a premium sound system (often Harman Kardon), a CD player, and available satellite radio.
Driver-assistance features: included parking sensors (Park Distance Control), rain-sensing wipers, and adaptive xenon headlights. Optional features included a Heads-Up Display that projected key information onto the windshield.
Safety features: comprised of multiple airbags (front, side, and curtain), anti-lock brakes (ABS), stability control (DSC), and traction control (DTC).
While not packed with the advanced driver-assistance systems of modern cars, it offered a solid level of safety for its era.
Crash test ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA are available for the E60 5-Series, but not specifically for the M5. However, the standard 5-Series generally received good safety ratings, indicating a structurally sound vehicle. It lacks features like lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control, which are now commonplace. The technology is dated by today's standards, but functional and well-integrated for its time.

2010 BMW M5 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2010 BMW M5 had a starting price of around $85,000 to $90,000. Today, used market prices range from approximately $20,000 to $40,000, depending heavily on condition, mileage, and maintenance history. The M5 has depreciated significantly, but well-maintained examples, especially those with lower mileage and complete service records, command higher prices. Factors affecting resale value include the presence of original parts, the absence of modifications, and overall cosmetic and mechanical condition. The color combination can also play a role, with more desirable colors like black or silver often fetching a premium.

2010 BMW M5 Cost of Ownership

The 2010 BMW M5 is a costly vehicle to own long-term. Insurance premiums are higher than average due to its performance capabilities. Fuel economy is poor, requiring premium gasoline. Maintenance and repair costs are substantial, especially for the V10 engine and SMG transmission. Parts can be expensive, and specialized labor is often required. Routine services, like oil changes, are also pricier than those for a standard sedan. Budgeting several thousand dollars per year for maintenance and repairs is realistic. It is not an economical car to own.

2010 BMW M5 Insurance

Insurance for a 2010 BMW M5 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2010 BMW M5 Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2010 BMW M5 competed with vehicles like the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG and the Audi RS6 (though the RS6 was not available in the US market for that model year).
Performance: The M5's V10 offered a unique high-revving experience, while the E63 AMG provided more low-end torque.
Features: All three cars were well-equipped, but the M5's iDrive system was often criticized for its complexity compared to Mercedes' COMAND system.
Reliability: The M5 is generally considered less reliable than the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG, which tends to have fewer major engine issues. Audi RS6 (when available) is similar to M5 in reliability.
Price: Used prices are comparable, though condition plays a significant role.
Alternatives to consider include:
  • Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG: Offers similar performance with potentially better reliability.
  • Cadillac CTS-V: A strong American contender with a supercharged V8 and more modern features in later model years.
  • BMW M3 (E90): Smaller and more nimble, but offers a similar high-revving experience.
If reliability is a major concern, the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG might be a better choice. If a raw, engaging driving experience is the priority, the M5 remains a compelling option.

Final Verdict: Is the 2010 BMW M5 a Good Sedan?

The 2010 BMW M5 is ideal for driving enthusiasts who appreciate a unique, high-revving V10 engine and are willing to accept higher maintenance costs. It's worth buying *used* if you find a well-maintained example with a comprehensive service history and pre-purchase inspection. Look for examples where common issues like throttle actuators and VANOS have been addressed. Be prepared for potentially expensive repairs. It's not recommended for those seeking an economical or low-maintenance daily driver. Only buy if you truly value the driving experience it offers and are prepared to invest in its upkeep. Buying from a private seller with detailed records or a reputable BMW specialist is advisable.

Only for the enthusiasts.

Rare car so it is extra special. There’s nothing not to like about it. Even the terrible gas mileage is something I’ve grown to appreciate.

Best Car I've Owned so far

I have had a lot of fast cars in the past but nothing like this. Once you get into 'M' mode this thing is just a beast. Don't turn the traction control off unless you know what your doing. SMG can be harsh at slow traffic but once you get it going it's the best transmission ever.

Best Performance for the money

The 2010 M5 is the quintessential performance sedan..ever, The beast is gentle around town, but will turn into a monster when pushed. Add all Dinan performance products and it will beat the new M-5 hands down.

Great car

I just had to say something regarding the review of the tires from another post. If you needed a salesperson to explain how and why performance tires only last 20K and cost $$$ then you should not be purchasing a high performance luxury sedan just because you can. The M5 is one of the best performance sedans money can buy but like ANY high performance car of quality repairs cost money. If you know what to expect form any of these german sedans and know what to expect you will really enjoy this car. It is more fun to drive in the rare anual transmission though.

stay away from m5

just picked up m5 from dealer service after 23,000 miles on a 70k family car got $3,000.00 dollar tire bill . was told the tires were only good for 20k miles and should avoid pot holes. du you kidding this is a soccer mom's car and it going to cost me 15 grand in tires to get 100k miles on this car . Wish the salesman would have pointed that out. lots of road noise too. don't buy this car

Best Auto Purchase I've Ever Made

In 2005, when the 2006 BMW M5/E60 began production, one thing was obvious to me: THIS IS A GAME-CHANGER. As a true automotive enthusiast, having owned over 30 vehicles in 15 years, the sheer power of 500 HP presented in the one of the best all around body designs that has ever adorned a vehicle makes every drive in the car a true experience. The SMG transmission, or Sequential Manual Gearbox, has never been given the respect that it is due from the media or vehicle experts. Different options for the SMG settings allow the driver to tailor the ride of the vehicle through a multitude of options, however, the only setting I recommend driving this car in is M Mode. By pressing a button on the steering wheel simply displayed as "M", the car releases its reserved 100 HP from the 400 HP default to the 500 HP beast that it is. I have not kept a vehicle longer than one year, and I am now up to five years in my M5. This E60 version of the M5 was the catalyst for all of the four-door sports-cars that have hit, and continue to hit the market. From Porsche's Panamera to Aston Martin's Rapide, the 2006-2010 E60 M5 established the benchmark, and I would recommend this vehicle above nearly any other car in the world. It is simply that great.
