2009 BMW M3 Overview, Reviews, Ratings & Specs

Rating: 4.30

The 2009 BMW M3 is a high-performance sports car, part of the fourth generation (E90/E92/E93) M3 produced from 2007-2013. Available as a sedan (E90), coupe (E92), and convertible (E93), it features a naturally aspirated V8 engine. Key trims revolve around these body styles. Pricing when new ranged from around $55,000 to $75,000, depending on options. Its high-revving V8 engine and balanced handling made it a driver's favorite.

The Good

The 2009 BMW M3 offers exhilarating performance from its V8 engine, appealing to driving enthusiasts. While not the most fuel-efficient, its relative reliability compared to other high-performance cars is a plus. It balances sporty handling with reasonable comfort for daily driving, and its iconic design remains attractive. Used values can offer a good entry point into M ownership.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2009 BMW M3 include rod bearing issues, throttle actuators failures, and potential for high maintenance costs due to its complex engine. Fuel economy is not a strong point. Also, navigation systems and iDrive can feel dated compared to modern systems. These are things to look out for.

What Problems Does the 2009 BMW M3 Have?

The 2009 BMW M3, like other E9x M3 models, is known for a few frequently reported problems. The most significant is the potential for rod bearing failure. This issue, while not affecting every car, is prevalent enough to warrant inspection and potential preventative replacement, especially on higher mileage examples. Another common concern is throttle actuator failure, which can cause rough running or limp mode. Replacing these actuators can be expensive. Some owners have reported issues with the iDrive system and other electronic components, although these are less common than the engine-related issues.

Recalls for the 2009 M3 were issued for various reasons, including fuel pump issues and potential problems with the brake system. It's crucial to check the vehicle's VIN with BMW to ensure all applicable recalls have been addressed. Long-term reliability can be a concern due to the high-performance nature of the engine and its sensitivity to proper maintenance. Regular oil changes with the correct oil, along with preventative maintenance on known problem areas, is essential to prolong the life of the engine and other components.

While there are no specific year-to-year differences within the E9x M3 range that drastically affect reliability, earlier models (2008-2009) are generally considered to be slightly more prone to rod bearing wear than later models (2011-2013), although this is not definitively proven. Regular maintenance and thorough pre-purchase inspection is always advisable.

How long will the 2009 BMW M3 last?

A well-maintained 2009 BMW M3 can easily reach 150,000 miles or more. Average mileage varies significantly based on usage, but many examples are seen with 80,000 to 120,000 miles. Long-term durability hinges on diligent maintenance. Weaknesses over time include potential rod bearing wear, throttle actuator failures, and general wear and tear on suspension components. The cooling system and electrical components also become more susceptible to issues as the car ages. Proper maintenance, addressing issues promptly, and using quality replacement parts will greatly extend the lifespan of the vehicle.

Negative Owner Reviews
M3 Loyalist
My previous M3s were 1997 & 2002, now I own a 2009 M3. The 1997 was a little under powered at 256 hp, but still fun with a stick shift, the 2002 with the SMG and 333 hp, was fast, but the engine sound when driven hard was a bit scratchy. Now the 2009 V8, 414 hp motor is a big boy, and with the 6 speed manual shift, it is a blast, and the engine roar is very nice. The 2009 is built to run at higher RPMs, so you might be disappointed when driving at lower RPMs around town.
MY M3 REVIEW
First, the interior is awful but ofcourse I knew that going in and us perf enthusisats tend to ignore interiors (maybe that's why BMW puts no effort into leaving the 1980's for instrumentation) The gas mileage is downright terrible, but then again, Most BM's are so that wasnt a surprise either The performance was very disappointing for all the $$$ I paid. I did like the 400+ horses power but for some reason, the handling just didnt live up to all the reads. I tell ya, nothing is worse than spending so much money for a car that you thought was going to perform great but didnt live up to those expectaions. Too bad the 3 day return policy that many dealers offer cant be extended to 6 months because that's all it took for me to realize I wasted so much money. Fortuntaley, I didnt take too much of a hit as I found a buyer who wanted the car just as bad as I did 6 months after I bought it. I like the quatro audis but they are way underpowered. I will say their interiors are much nicer than the BMW's but again, I want true performance although a nice int oesnt hurt if a manufacturer spends the time with anice design. Time to look for another perf sedan. Maybe a MERC AMG if I can afford it

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2009 BMW M3 comes with a range of built-in tech and safety features. Standard entertainment features include a premium audio system, CD player, and auxiliary input. The iDrive system, though dated by modern standards, controls various vehicle functions. Driver-assistance features are relatively limited compared to modern cars, but include Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) and antilock brakes (ABS).

Optional features included a navigation system, enhanced audio system, and Electronic Damping Control (EDC), which allows for adjustable suspension settings. Safety features include front and side airbags, as well as curtain airbags for head protection. Rear parking sensors were also available as an option.

Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) vary depending on the body style. The sedan generally performed well in crash tests. However, the convertible may have slightly different ratings due to its unique structure. It is recommended to check specific ratings for the chosen body style from these organizations to assess its safety performance. While it lacks the advanced driver-assistance systems of newer vehicles, the 2009 M3 offers a solid foundation of safety features for its time.

2009 BMW M3 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2009 BMW M3 ranged from approximately $55,000 to $75,000 depending on the body style and options. Currently, used market prices vary widely based on mileage, condition, and location, but typically range from $20,000 to $40,000. Depreciation has been significant, but the M3 is holding its value relatively well due to its desirability. Factors affecting resale value include overall condition, maintenance history, mileage, originality (avoiding modifications), and the presence of desirable options like the DCT transmission and navigation system. Cars with complete service records and low mileage command a premium.

2009 BMW M3 Cost of Ownership

The 2009 BMW M3 is generally considered costly to own. Insurance premiums are higher due to its performance capabilities. Fuel economy is poor, requiring premium fuel. Maintenance can be expensive, especially for potential rod bearing replacement and throttle actuator repairs. Regular servicing is crucial to avoid costly breakdowns. Expect to spend a significant amount annually on upkeep. This is not an economical vehicle for the budget-conscious owner.

2009 BMW M3 Insurance

Insurance for a 2009 BMW M3 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2009 BMW M3 Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2009 BMW M3's key rivals included the Audi RS4, Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG, and Cadillac CTS-V. The M3 offered a balanced driving experience with a high-revving engine and precise handling, while the C63 AMG prioritized raw power. The RS4, though not available in the US in 2009, provided all-wheel drive grip. The CTS-V offered supercharged V8 performance at a competitive price.

In terms of reliability, the M3 is generally considered more reliable than the C63 AMG but potentially less so than the Audi RS4. Features are comparable across the board, although the M3's iDrive system was sometimes criticized for its complexity compared to rivals. Price-wise, the M3 was typically positioned between the RS4 and the C63 AMG.

Alternatives to the 2009 M3 include later model year E9x M3s (2011-2013), which may have addressed some early production issues. For those prioritizing raw power, the C63 AMG is a strong contender. If all-weather performance is a concern, an Audi S4 or S5 (though not direct rivals in terms of outright performance) might be a better choice. The Cadillac CTS-V offers similar performance and often comes at a lower price point on the used market, but requires careful inspection due to potential reliability concerns.

Final Verdict: Is the 2009 BMW M3 a Good Sedan?

The 2009 BMW M3 is ideal for driving enthusiasts who appreciate a high-revving V8 engine, balanced handling, and a connection to the road. It's worth buying as a used car if you are prepared for the potential maintenance costs associated with a high-performance vehicle. Pre-purchase inspection is crucial, focusing on rod bearings and throttle actuators. The coupe (E92) and sedan (E90) are popular choices, while the convertible (E93) offers open-air enjoyment. Opting for a well-maintained example with a comprehensive service history is highly recommended. Consider a model with the DCT transmission for slightly improved performance, but be aware of its potential repair costs.

German Quality is best on December 13, 2017

A mountain road carver with great steering feel

I bought the M3 to replace my Porsche Cayman S when my wife and I had kids. Although the car has a nice revving V8 and very communicative steering with good feedback it is no match for the Cayman. As a around town drive the family around car it isn't a lot of fun. The ride is stiff and the chassis doesn't feel alive in town BUT when you drive on a twisty mountain road the car is in it's element. The chassis and steering come alive and eagerly attack each upcoming corner. It loves elevation changes and always feels composed and buttoned down. I have never tracked my car but assume it would eat up a good road course like Lime Rock. The mechanically quality is fair but the materials used are far and above domestic and asian products. Even the door sill have a noticeable heft and quality you wouldn't find with a Lexus or Toyota. The thing that do break are more expensive to replace because of this too. Overall good touring or track car but not a lot of fun around town.

Very reliable with no problems

This car has been very amazing, I have not yet had one problem with the vehicle. Very fast. Just two cons would be the mileage and creaking sound from the hardtop.
