The 2009 Hyundai Azera is a full-size sedan introduced as part of Hyundai's effort to offer more upscale vehicles. The Azera, part of the model years 2006-2011 generation, was available in GLS and Limited trims. Its popularity stemmed from offering a spacious interior, comfortable ride, and a generous list of standard features at a competitive price. The original MSRP ranged from around $25,000 to $30,000.
The Good

The 2009 Azera offered a comfortable and quiet ride, appealing to buyers seeking tranquility. Its V6 engine delivered adequate power. The generous standard features and spacious cabin provided a sense of luxury without the high price tag, making it a smart, practical choice for budget-conscious consumers. While not a sports car, its smooth ride delivered an emotionally satisfying driving experience.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2009 Azera include some reports of electrical issues and potential suspension wear. Some owners have reported issues with the navigation system (if equipped) and the quality of some interior materials. Be sure to check for proper operation of all electronic features and listen for any unusual noises from the suspension during a test drive.

What Problems Does the 2009 Hyundai Azera Have?

The 2009 Hyundai Azera, while generally reliable, has had some frequently reported problems. Some owners have reported issues with the electronic stability control (ESC) system, where the warning light illuminates intermittently. Another common issue involves the automatic transmission, with some reports of hard shifting or slipping. Electrical problems, such as malfunctioning power windows or door locks, have also been noted.

Recalls for the 2009 Azera, and similar model year Hyundais, have focused on issues such as brake light switch malfunctions and potential problems with the anti-lock braking system (ABS). It's crucial to check the vehicle's VIN on the NHTSA website (safercar.gov) to determine if all applicable recalls have been performed. Long-term reliability concerns tend to center around the durability of certain interior components and the potential for increased repair costs as the vehicle ages. Regular maintenance, particularly transmission fluid changes, is vital to mitigate potential problems. Pre-purchase inspections are highly recommended to identify any existing issues before buying a used 2009 Azera. Check for corrosion, especially in areas with harsh winter climates, as this can affect long-term durability.

How long will the 2009 Hyundai Azera last?

With proper maintenance, a 2009 Hyundai Azera can realistically reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners have reported exceeding this mileage with regular servicing, including oil changes, transmission fluid flushes, and timely replacement of wear items like brakes and tires. The key to long-term durability lies in proactive maintenance. Weaknesses over time may include deterioration of rubber components (hoses, belts), potential for rust in colder climates, and the eventual need for replacement of major components like the alternator or starter. Careful attention to these areas will maximize the vehicle's lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2009 Hyundai Azera came equipped with a decent array of tech and safety features for its time. Standard tech included an AM/FM/CD audio system with auxiliary input, dual-zone automatic climate control, and keyless entry. The Limited trim added an Infinity sound system and available navigation. Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern vehicles, but included standard cruise control. Safety features consisted of anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic stability control (ESC), traction control, and front, side, and side curtain airbags.

Optional features included the navigation system (Limited trim) and sunroof. Crash test ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) show the 2009 Azera achieving "Good" ratings in frontal offset and side impact tests. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave the Azera a 5-star rating for driver and passenger protection in frontal crash tests and 5 stars for side crash protection. These scores reflect a strong commitment to occupant safety for a vehicle of its era. While it lacks advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) like lane departure warning or automatic emergency braking, its core safety features and solid crash test performance make it a reasonably safe choice.

2009 Hyundai Azera Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2009 Hyundai Azera had an MSRP ranging from approximately $25,000 to $30,000, depending on the trim and options. As a used vehicle, prices now typically range from around $4,000 to $8,000, contingent on mileage, condition, and location. The Azera has experienced significant depreciation, as is typical for most sedans. Factors affecting resale value include overall condition (especially rust), maintenance records, and mileage. Vehicles with lower mileage and comprehensive maintenance histories command higher prices. Market demand for sedans also influences resale values; SUVs and crossovers generally hold their value better.

2009 Hyundai Azera Cost of Ownership

The 2009 Hyundai Azera is generally considered relatively economical to own. Insurance costs are typically moderate. Fuel economy, while not exceptional, is reasonable for a V6-powered full-size sedan. Maintenance costs can be higher as the vehicle ages, but regular servicing can prevent major issues. Repair costs are generally average, with parts availability being good. Overall, the Azera presents a reasonable ownership proposition, balancing initial purchase price with ongoing expenses.

Insurance for a 2009 Hyundai Azera is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Four Door Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2009 Hyundai Azera Compare to Other Four Door Sedan?

The 2009 Hyundai Azera competed with other full-size sedans like the Toyota Avalon, Buick LaCrosse, and Ford Taurus. In terms of performance, the Azera's V6 engine was comparable to its rivals, offering adequate power for daily driving. Feature-wise, the Azera offered a generous list of standard equipment, often exceeding that of its competitors at a similar price point. However, the Toyota Avalon generally held a slight edge in reliability, while the Buick LaCrosse offered a more refined interior. The Ford Taurus provided a more modern design, even in 2009.

In terms of price, the Azera was often more affordable than the Avalon, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious buyers. If reliability is a top priority, the Toyota Avalon is a strong alternative, albeit at a higher price. If a more luxurious interior is desired, the Buick LaCrosse is worth considering. For a more modern and stylish sedan, the Ford Taurus is a viable option. The Azera strikes a good balance between features, price, and comfort, making it a solid contender in its class. However, carefully consider individual needs and priorities when comparing these vehicles.

Final Verdict: Is the 2009 Hyundai Azera a Good Four Door Sedan?

The 2009 Hyundai Azera is a good choice for buyers seeking a spacious, comfortable, and well-equipped full-size sedan at an affordable price. It's ideal for individuals or families prioritizing value and comfort over sporty handling or cutting-edge technology. Whether it's worth buying depends on its condition and price. A well-maintained Azera with lower mileage can be a worthwhile purchase, especially if it has a comprehensive service history and has had any outstanding recalls addressed. Opting for the Limited trim provides more desirable features like leather upholstery and heated seats. A thorough pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is crucial to ensure its reliability and avoid potential costly repairs.

Hyundai Azera

This is a great car. It has extremely good pick up. There are a lot of interior comfort features. I like that in addition to the normal MPG electronic readings - it tells average miles per hour. Since I live in stop-and-go New Jersey, I almost never get up to 20 mph. While I never get as good as the advertised mpg, it does quite good in light of the power of the engine.

A New Car in my Life

Since I purchased the car four months ago I have been very satisfied with the economy of the car, ride and performance. As a person who only owned Maximas I am pleased with the purchase of this car and if it continues to perform as it has so far, I may never go back.

Rolled the dice and came up a winner

Surprise, surprise! Who would have thought that a Hyundai of all cars would win my heart and affection. I went with the Azera b/c it was smaller than the Genesis which had a few too many gadgets I did not want or need and included a big jump in price which I had a hard time justifying. The Sonata had a noticable size difference inside and was far too common on the road to be appreciated. If you don't want to spend the extra 5-7K then the Sonata will do, but the extra head, leg and elbow room for a fat man like me is well worth the money. My beef with the car is that it did have a few "glitches" after a few months from the show room that were covered under the warranty. They were simple fixes, but also not something I would expect from a new car. Regardless, I really do love the Azera and would buy it again without any questions asked or upgrades requested. Plenty of room, great engine performance, plenty of gadgets to make me happy, outstanding room in the backseat, and a few little things that make me happy like the cargo net and mud protector in the trunk. I am still getting used to the rear end look of the car and will probably never like it, but that is not my problem. Surprise, surprise, I love this car!!!

Most Luxurious and Powerful Car I've Ever Owned.

I am so pleased with the Hyundai Azera that I hardly know where to start! I've previously owned Lexus, Infiniti and all kinds of compact vehicles (Nissan, Toyoyta, Ford, etc) and nothing compares to this car. "A Mercedes at a compact car price."

Poor gas milage, no other problems

Great car, loaded with features.Great Warranty. Except very poor gas millage 13.5 -14.5 mpg in the city, where I do most of my driving. I got 27 mpg on highway. No complaint about that. I now have 4,000 miles and have it documented with my dealer about the poor gas mileage He says wait till 5,000 miles before contacting Hyundai

Surpising vehicle

Have had my Azera for 14 months and have put 27,000 miles on it. (Mostly highway) the vehicle gets great gas mileage and incredible pickup. I have no problems getting onto a highway or passing other vehicles. The interior is good but the front seats need to go back further. The radio controls are ok but I would have put wood behind the radio controls vs grey plastic, but the sound system is excellent. Styling is ok but from the side the car looks like most imports. I would use a better quality of leather as well but for the price it is unmatched by the others.

Didn't go wrong with this one.

I jokingly told people that this is a poor man's Lincoln. Actually, I think this car is comparable to a Lincoln without the downside. Very comfortable, reliable car for around the town driving as well as serious roadtrips. I've put 10K miles on it in the last 9 months. 3K of which was a trip to Santa Fe and back. I like the quiet ride and feel very safe with the additional airbags... especially when I have my small grandaughter. It will drink gas if you let it, but with my keeping a light foot, I get 24 mpg around town and 30 mpg on the Hwy. The only thing is that it has an ashtray (which is my mistake when selecting the car). Bottom Line: The Azera GLS is a remarkable value. Paying extra for the Limited just didn't make sense for me.

Azera Limited my 15th Hyundai

Have owned Hyundai's since 1987. my first was an Excel, Sonata, XG300, XG350L and now the AZERA. All I can say is that every car has been more satisfying to me and always reliable. Crash worthiness awesome, was in an accident where I totaled 5 cars and hit a light post and walked out unscathed. Now to my new Azera. its delicious simply understated Elegance with BRUTE Force. This car has enough power to blow away many other Euros & Asian competitors. It's just a dream. rides great, handles effortlessly and it's spunky and has plenty of get go whether from a standing start or passing on the highway. Bottom line: UNDERSTATED ELEGANCE, BRUTE FORCE, LUXURIOUS THROUGHOUT & RELIABLE TOO. WHAT MORE CAN YOU ASK FROM A CAR! YOU CAN'T GO WRONG BUYING & OWNING ANY OF THESE CAR!
