The 2007 Mazda RX-8 is a unique sports car known for its rotary engine and distinctive styling. Introduced in 2003 as a 2004 model, the RX-8 continued Mazda's tradition of rotary-powered vehicles. It's a four-door, four-seat coupe. Key trims include the Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring. New pricing ranged from around $26,000 to $32,000. The RX-8 stands out for its high-revving engine and unconventional rear-hinged "suicide" doors. Its popularity stemmed from its unique driving experience and relative affordability compared to other sports cars.
The Good

The 2007 RX-8 offers a thrilling, high-revving driving experience that appeals to enthusiasts. Its unique rotary engine delivers smooth power and nimble handling. The design is sporty and distinctive. While not supremely comfortable, the RX-8 offers usable rear seats, making it more practical than some sports cars. For emotional buyers, it&s the unique engine; for practical buyers, it's the relatively affordable price for a sports car.

The Bad

The RX-8's biggest weakness is the rotary engine's apex seal wear, potentially leading to engine failure. Oil consumption is also a common issue. Fuel economy is poor compared to piston-engine alternatives. Premature catalytic converter failure is another concern. Potential buyers should also watch out for compression issues during a pre-purchase inspection, which can be costly to repair.

What Problems Does the 2007 Mazda RX-8 Have?

The 2007 Mazda RX-8, like other model years, is prone to several frequently reported problems primarily centered around the RENESIS rotary engine. Apex seal failure is a major concern, leading to low compression and requiring engine rebuilds or replacements. This is often exacerbated by improper maintenance, such as using the wrong type of oil or neglecting oil level checks. Excessive oil consumption is another common complaint. Many owners find themselves adding oil frequently between changes.

Catalytic converter failure is also frequently reported. If the engine isn't running optimally, excess fuel can enter the catalytic converter, causing it to overheat and fail. Ignition coil failures are another common issue, leading to misfires and poor performance. Regular spark plug replacement is vital to minimize this. There were some recalls related to fuel pump issues, which could cause the engine to stall. Check the NHTSA website for specific recall information related to VINs. Long-term reliability is a significant concern due to the inherent nature of the rotary engine and the potential for expensive repairs. Prior model years (2004-2006) faced similar issues, making thorough pre-purchase inspections essential.

How long will the 2007 Mazda RX-8 last?

A well-maintained 2007 Mazda RX-8 can potentially reach 100,000-150,000 miles before major engine work is needed, but this is highly dependent on maintenance and driving habits. Many RX-8s require an engine rebuild well before this mileage if not properly maintained. Oil changes every 3,000 miles are recommended. The key weakness is the rotary engine's durability; apex seals wear over time, leading to compression loss. The cooling system also needs careful attention to prevent overheating, which can damage the engine. Regular compression tests are crucial for monitoring the engine's health. Rust can also be an issue in certain climates, so inspect the undercarriage.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2007 Mazda RX-8 featured a decent array of tech and safety features for its time. Standard entertainment included a CD player with an auxiliary input. Higher trims like the Touring and Grand Touring offered a Bose audio system upgrade. Navigation was an optional feature on the Grand Touring trim.

Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern cars. It had standard traction control and stability control (Dynamic Stability Control - DSC).

Safety features included front airbags, side airbags, and side curtain airbags. Anti-lock brakes (ABS) were also standard.

Crash test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) for the 2007 RX-8 show mixed results. While it performed well in some categories, it received marginal ratings in others, particularly in side-impact tests. NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) ratings should also be consulted for a more complete picture of its safety performance. It's crucial to check the latest safety information from official sources before making a purchase decision. It lacked advanced driver-assistance systems common in newer vehicles like lane departure warning or automatic emergency braking. The technology was adequate for its time, but clearly lags behind modern standards.

2007 Mazda RX-8 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2007 Mazda RX-8 ranged from approximately $26,000 to $32,000 depending on the trim and options. Current used market prices vary greatly, typically ranging from $4,000 to $12,000, depending on condition, mileage, and maintenance history. The RX-8 has depreciated significantly due to the engine's reputation for unreliability and high running costs. Factors affecting resale value include engine health (compression test results are critical), overall condition, maintenance records, and trim level. RX-8s with documented engine rebuilds or replacements can command higher prices.

2007 Mazda RX-8 Cost of Ownership

The 2007 Mazda RX-8 is generally costly to own long-term. Insurance costs can be moderate, but fuel economy is poor, requiring premium gasoline. Maintenance is more frequent and specialized compared to piston-engine cars, primarily due to the rotary engine's needs. Repairs, especially engine-related issues, can be expensive. Apex seal failure necessitates costly rebuilds. Budgeting for potential engine work is crucial. Overall, the RX-8 is not an economical choice; it's best suited for enthusiasts willing to invest in its upkeep.

Insurance for a 2007 Mazda RX-8 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Coupe with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2007 Mazda RX-8 Compare to Other Coupe?

The 2007 Mazda RX-8 competed with sports cars like the Nissan 350Z, Honda S2000, and Subaru WRX. In terms of performance, the RX-8 offered unique handling and a high-revving engine, but lacked the outright torque of the 350Z. Feature-wise, it was comparable to its rivals, though the rear seats offered more practicality than the S2000. However, reliability is where the RX-8 falls short; the rotary engine's issues are well-documented, while the 350Z and S2000 are significantly more reliable. The WRX offered better all-weather capability with its all-wheel drive. Price-wise, the RX-8 was initially competitive, but its high running costs and potential for expensive repairs make it a less appealing long-term value. Alternatives include the Nissan 350Z, which offers similar performance with better reliability. The Honda S2000 provides a purer sports car experience, but lacks rear seats. The Subaru WRX offers a different kind of performance with all-wheel drive and turbocharging. If reliability is a major concern, the 350Z or WRX are better choices. If you prioritize a unique driving experience and are prepared for the RX-8's quirks, it can still be a rewarding car.

Final Verdict: Is the 2007 Mazda RX-8 a Good Coupe?

The 2007 Mazda RX-8 is ideal for driving enthusiasts who appreciate its unique rotary engine and nimble handling, and who are willing to accept its inherent risks. It's not a practical daily driver for most due to its fuel consumption and potential maintenance costs. Whether it's worth buying depends heavily on condition and price. A well-maintained example with documented service history and a recent compression test might be a worthwhile project car or weekend toy. Avoid examples with low compression or signs of neglect. The Grand Touring trim offers more features, but prioritize engine health over trim level. Buying one with a pre-existing, properly executed engine rebuild can mitigate some risk. Enter with your eyes open.

Would Avoid.

Great interior and exterior styling. My very first call i ever owned. 7 months in, i was already changing my spark plugs because of the rotary engine frying them. Would Avoid unless you plan on doing a engine swap.

My RX8 has been my daily driver for 9 years!

Still loving this car after 9 years! Handles like a damn Porsche, and sounds like nothing else on the road. A consistent head turner, the design of this car is amazing. This car gets a bad rap from people not taking care of it properly, but if you follow the guidelines, it can be a freaking incredible value, and the most fun you'll ever have for the money. I can't say enough good things, I wish this car would last forever!

Fun, fun, fun!

I bought this car new in 2007 and have been enjoying it ever since. I have the six speed manual and the whole setup is is mechanically tight and exhilarating. This is one of those cars that was built from the ground up and you feel it. The outside design still stands up, even though it’s been 15 years since its original release. The handling on dry roads is outstanding with its near perfect 50/50 weight distribution. On wet or slippery roads it does not inspire nearly the same confidence. The rotary has been extremely reliable, though I have had to educate myself on de-flooding techniques to spare the tow truck once or twice a year. My son is anxiously waiting for me to hand over the keys, but right now I’m still having too much fun.

Regret selling it, tons of fun with proper care

It's a rwd sports car so you get what you would expect, terrible in the snow but a monster in the corners. Perfectly balanced, unique styling and the last production rotary ever. The most unique car I've ever owned and I'll definitely be looking for another one soon. Dont be scared by the reviews about engines blowing up, take care of it and PREMIX! Take car it it and it will take care of you.

Fun, Quirky Car For Enthusiasts

This is an enthusiasts car. The transmission is wonderful, the steering is heavy and direct, and the transmission is a dream. With the rear seats and doors, there's actually a decent amount of space. It's not the most powerful car. It's quick but not fast. It's just a blast to drive. Puts a smile on my face every time I bring it up to the 9000 RPM redline. There are some quirks to owning it, like having to check the oil very frequently, and not so ideal gas mileage, but the quirks are worth the experience you get from it. Fantastic vehicle.

A small beast

I love the way it looks, the way it drives, the way it feels, the way it sounds....The car starts and you are hooked on it. It makes you want to drive it. When you do drive it, it feels like a dream ride as far as handling and responsiveness. It lacks AC in extreme heat. The RX8 produces a lot of heat. The special engine needs to be cared for. Check the oil every couple of fill ups. Know the car and it will treat you well. It dislikes extreme heat and the engine needs to be warm in cold weather before you turn it off.
