The Good
The RX-8's advantages include its unique rotary engine offering smooth, high-revving performance and balanced handling for an engaging driving experience. Its distinctive four-door coupe design is aesthetically pleasing. While not supremely reliable, well-maintained examples can provide years of enjoyment. It offers good value for its performance, appealing to both enthusiasts and practical buyers seeking a sporty car.
The Bad
The RX-8's main weakness is the rotary engine's reliability, particularly apex seal wear, which can lead to low compression and engine failure. Oil consumption is also a common issue. Watch out for hot start problems and ensure the engine is properly maintained with frequent oil changes. Rust can also be a concern in some climates.

What Problems Does the 2004 Mazda RX-8 Have?
Recalls for the 2004 RX-8 have included issues related to fuel leakage and potential engine stalling. Owners should check with Mazda or the NHTSA to confirm if their specific vehicle was affected by any recalls and that the necessary repairs were performed. Long-term reliability is a major concern due to the rotary engine's inherent weaknesses. Proper maintenance, including frequent oil changes and pre-mixing oil into the fuel, can help prolong engine life, but rebuilds are often necessary at some point. Rust can also be a concern, especially in areas with harsh winters where road salt is used. While later model years saw some improvements, the core rotary engine issues persisted throughout the RX-8's production run.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Safety features included standard front airbags, side airbags, and anti-lock brakes (ABS). Traction control was also standard. Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC), Mazda's version of electronic stability control, was available as an option.
Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) varied. The RX-8 generally performed well in frontal crash tests but had mixed results in side-impact tests. It's important to consult the specific ratings for the 2004 model year on the IIHS and NHTSA websites for detailed information. The available safety features were adequate for the time, but the RX-8 lacked the more advanced driver-assistance systems that are common in modern vehicles. The focus was more on the driving experience than cutting-edge technology.

How Does the 2004 Mazda RX-8 Compare to Other Sedan?
In terms of features, the RX-8 was reasonably equipped, but the Nissan 350Z offered a more luxurious interior. Reliability is where the RX-8 fell short compared to its rivals. The 350Z and S2000 are known for their greater reliability. The WRX, while not as reliable as the Japanese sports cars, is easier and often cheaper to repair.
In terms of price, the RX-8 was competitive when new, but its rapid depreciation makes it attractive on the used market. However, potential buyers must factor in the higher maintenance costs. If reliability is a major concern, a Honda S2000 or a well-maintained Nissan 350Z would be better alternatives. If all-weather performance is a priority, the Subaru WRX is a compelling option.

This is a fun car to drive. It loves to go fast. This is a great car to drive. Black leather seats all around. Front bucket seats with built in heat for cold days. Has extra storage and plugs to charge up your phone even in the back seats. Has plenty of leg room and is a 4 door. This car is so smart, it'll tell you if your running low of air in the tires. All my friends like to drive it too.
