The Porsche Panamera, introduced in 2009, is Porsche's foray into the luxury sedan market. The 2019 model is part of the second generation (2017-present) and is available as a sedan, Executive (long wheelbase), and Sport Turismo (wagon). Key trims include the base Panamera, 4, S, GTS, Turbo, and Turbo S E-Hybrid. Pricing ranged from approximately $86,300 to over $194,800 when new. It stands out for its blend of sports car performance and luxury sedan practicality, offering impressive handling and powerful engines in a comfortable package.
The Good

The 2019 Panamera offers thrilling performance with powerful engine options and precise handling, appealing to the emotional buyer. Practically, it provides a comfortable and luxurious interior, distinctive design, and available all-wheel drive for enhanced safety. While not the most fuel-efficient, its performance justifies the consumption. Reliability is generally good for a luxury car, although maintenance can be costly.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2019 Panamera include its high maintenance costs, especially for complex components like the air suspension and hybrid systems. Some owners have reported electronic glitches. The rear headroom can be limited for taller passengers in the standard sedan. The sheer number of options can also inflate the purchase price significantly.

What Problems Does the 2019 Porsche Panamera Have?

The 2019 Porsche Panamera, while generally reliable for a luxury vehicle, has some frequently reported problems. One common concern involves the electronic systems, with owners reporting glitches in the infotainment system (PCM), including issues with the navigation and connectivity features. Air suspension problems are also reported, leading to costly repairs. Some owners have experienced issues with the hybrid system in the E-Hybrid models, involving the battery and related components.

Recalls can vary, and it's crucial to check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for the most up-to-date information. Possible recalls could include issues with fuel lines, airbags, or software glitches.

Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the complexity of the vehicle. The more features and technology included, the higher the likelihood of potential problems down the road. Specifically, the air suspension, PDK transmission, and hybrid system components can be expensive to repair or replace. Regular maintenance and adherence to the recommended service schedule are crucial to mitigating these risks. It's advisable to have a pre-purchase inspection performed by a qualified Porsche technician to identify any potential issues before buying a used 2019 Panamera.

How long will the 2019 Porsche Panamera last?

With proper maintenance, a 2019 Porsche Panamera can provide well over 150,000 miles or 10+ years of service. However, consistent and meticulous maintenance is key. Regular oil changes, timely replacement of wear-and-tear items (brakes, tires), and addressing any issues promptly will extend its lifespan.

Long-term durability can be affected by the air suspension system, which may require expensive repairs over time. The PDK transmission is generally reliable but benefits from regular servicing. Hybrid components, especially in the E-Hybrid models, can also present long-term maintenance costs. Ignoring scheduled maintenance will undoubtedly shorten the vehicle's lifespan and increase the risk of major repairs.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2019 Porsche Panamera boasts a comprehensive suite of technology, entertainment, driver-assistance, and safety features. Standard tech includes the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system with a 12.3-inch touchscreen display, navigation, Apple CarPlay, and a premium sound system.

Driver-assistance features include standard front and rear park assist, lane departure warning, and automatic emergency braking. Optional features include adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, surround-view camera, and night vision assist. The adaptive cruise control system is particularly sophisticated, offering smooth and responsive performance.

Safety features include a robust chassis design and a comprehensive airbag system. While specific 2019 Panamera crash-test ratings from NHTSA and IIHS may vary, the Panamera typically performs well in safety evaluations. Check the official NHTSA and IIHS websites for the most accurate and up-to-date crash-test ratings.

Entertainment options include a Burmester high-end surround sound system, rear-seat entertainment system with individual screens, and Porsche Connect services for online functionality. The available features greatly enhance the driving experience, but also contribute to the vehicle's higher price point. The intuitive and responsive nature of the PCM system is a major highlight.

2019 Porsche Panamera Prices and Market Value

The 2019 Porsche Panamera had a starting MSRP around $86,300, with higher trims like the Turbo S E-Hybrid exceeding $194,800 when new. Current used market prices range significantly depending on the trim, mileage, condition, and options. Expect to find base models in good condition for around $50,000-$65,000, while higher trims can command $80,000 or more.

Depreciation is considerable for luxury vehicles, and the Panamera is no exception. Factors affecting resale value include the car's condition, mileage, service history, and the desirability of specific options. Cars with desirable options packages and a clean service record will hold their value better.

2019 Porsche Panamera Cost of Ownership

The 2019 Porsche Panamera is a costly vehicle to own. Insurance premiums are high due to its performance and value. Fuel costs can be significant, especially for the V8 models. Maintenance and repairs are expensive, as Porsche parts and labor command a premium. Long-term ownership costs, including potential repairs to the air suspension, PDK transmission, or hybrid system, can be substantial. This is not an economical vehicle choice; it's a luxury performance vehicle with associated costs.

2019 Porsche Panamera Insurance

Insurance for a 2019 Porsche Panamera is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Hatchback with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2019 Porsche Panamera Compare to Other Hatchback?

The 2019 Porsche Panamera competes with luxury sedans like the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7 Series, Audi A8, and Maserati Quattroporte. In terms of performance, the Panamera offers a sportier driving experience than most rivals, particularly the S and GTS models. However, the S-Class provides a more luxurious and comfortable ride.

Feature-wise, the Panamera is well-equipped, but the S-Class often leads with cutting-edge technology. Reliability is a mixed bag; the Panamera can be prone to certain issues, while the German rivals have their own potential problems. The Maserati Quattroporte is less reliable overall.

Price-wise, the Panamera is competitive, but can quickly escalate with options. Alternatives to consider include the BMW M5 for similar performance with a slightly more practical focus, or the Audi RS7 for a blend of performance and hatchback practicality. The Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe offers similar performance and styling to the Panamera. For ultimate luxury and comfort, the S-Class remains a strong contender despite its less sporty handling.

Final Verdict: Is the 2019 Porsche Panamera a Good Hatchback?

The 2019 Porsche Panamera is ideal for buyers seeking a luxury sedan with a strong emphasis on performance and a distinctive Porsche design. It's worth buying if you appreciate the blend of sports car dynamics and luxury amenities, and are prepared for higher ownership costs.

Buying used can be a good value proposition, but a thorough pre-purchase inspection is crucial. Consider the S or GTS trims for a balance of performance and features. The base Panamera offers a good entry point, while the Turbo and Turbo S E-Hybrid deliver incredible power but come with a significant price premium and potentially higher maintenance. Ensure the car has a complete service history to mitigate potential issues.

Practical 911

This is my 4th Porsche, and might be my last. With two 7 year olds still at home, it was too tough to get them into the back of the 911. This is the perfect blend of practicality and zoom zoom. From the drivers seat, it feels like a wide, flat 911 with almost all of the spunk and driving fun. I use mine as a daily driver and it drives great. There is really no comparison to the fit and finish from Porsche -- all top notch, even at the base level.
